Because it is despicable to make promises you have no intentions of keeping in order to deceive people and secure their vote. How on earth is that backing myself into a corner? I'm simply pointing out the obvious, surely.

Maybe you have some questionable morals if you think this is acceptable conduct.

What promises haven’t they kept? You’ve been provided a very nice link to help you.

GreenGully · 17/07/2025 16:02

BIossomtoes · 17/07/2025 15:51

But this one is because the government is enacting a manifesto pledge by extending the voting franchise. Just as it promised pre election.

Yes. I have simply pointed out it is hilarious that he chooses to deliver on the pledge that will help him stay in power whilst ignoring the more pressing issues.

I'd also make voting possible online and make it compulsory. If census returns, passports, banking etc can be done online then voting can.

This!!

I think it’s good. It’s done in Scottish elections. Some people just miss out on voting if an election is right before they turn 18. I can’t see it having much of an effect in terms of who’s in government but hopefully helps some young people feel involved.

pucksack · 17/07/2025 16:03

This thread proves stupidity isn't restricted to under 18 yr olds.

This site tracks the progress Labour are making. Might be useful tool to see how far they've got in a single year

That’s just an opinion blog. Yet it’s linked often by Labour on mn

Does it have higher unemployment, negative growth for last two announcements and inflation going up plus welfare cuts?

Absentmindedsmile · 17/07/2025 16:04

party4you · 17/07/2025 15:55

I think they have. The first two words of your user name are very apt x

Aw go on, you’re so Labour. Hilarious if wasn’t so regretful. ❤️

Feel free to counter it with evidence of your own then

Go to latest inflation figures, unemployment and growth. All recent and easily available. Listen to headlines which covers them. And coverage of welfare cuts.

None of that is a counter response to manifesto fulfilment. Try again.

It is independent.

It's tracking manifesto promises, including compromised ones. Why do you have an issue with facts?

Does your hatred extent to elderly and disabled people who need help, or is it just a made up stereotype you don’t like?

Calm down 😏

ExpressCheckout · 17/07/2025 11:07

I think this argument could have been valid, say, ten years ago. But I think times have changed. Younger people often express more extreme views, left or right, than older people. So I think the 16-18s will be more drawn to extreme left wing parties such as Corbyn's proposed new party or the Greens, and (yes) Reform/other racist parties on the right-wing. I don't think this will help Labour directly at all, but it will make them focus on policies for young people.

Edited

I think the kids most likely to support Reform won’t bother voting, which is what Labour are counting on

Counter what? A bunch of opinions collected on who knows what criteria on an “independent hobby site"?

There is no solid or factual data, you might as well try to counter a fart.

Haha people should try ONS and employment / inflation / growth data instead

Well then, aren't you pleased that they have kept this one?

GreenGully · 17/07/2025 16:09

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/07/2025 15:55

But they're only a year into what is likely to be a 4-5 year term. Surely you didn't expect them to have done everything already?

And also, you can't possibly know why other people may have voted for them or which pledges they might want prioritised.

Of course not. However, what I did not expect in this relatively short amount of time was the level of lies and U-Turns. I don't think anyone did.

Right so if I put together website with a bunch of pretty coloured bar graphs as a hobby, I can post them here, claim it as objective fact and demand you provide “counter facts”?

Its nonsense.

Use real data or accept its just advertising.

mustytrusty · 17/07/2025 16:10

This is the best news. They are voting for things that will effect their young adult life - they'll be 20 by the next election and the decisions made by the government they have been part of the vote for will impact their first jobs / education / uni choices etc.

ShesTheAlbatross · 17/07/2025 16:11

No taxation without representation.

They can pay tax, they should get a vote.

I find the politicians’ arguments irritating though. All pretending it’s on principle that they either support or disagree with it. When we all know that if 16/17 yr olds polled right wing, Labour would have a fundamental disagreement with it, and the Tories would have done already it in the last 10 yrs.

Of course not because I think giving the vote to 16 year olds is ridiculous and the only reason he is doing it is to stay in power.

GreenGully · 17/07/2025 16:17

pucksack · 17/07/2025 16:00

@GreenGully instead of doubling down & deflecting why can't you just acknowledge you made a mistake? My 3 yr old can manage that..

What mistake is that?

OneBadKitty · 17/07/2025 16:18

Such a bad idea. They are children with brains and views which are a long way from being fully formed. Marriage age should be raised to 18 not other things brought down to 16. 21 was a better age for gaining the right to vote.

PandoraSocks · 17/07/2025 16:19

GreenGully · 17/07/2025 16:12

Of course not because I think giving the vote to 16 year olds is ridiculous and the only reason he is doing it is to stay in power.

Labour are in power until 2029, so right now they don't have to do anything to stay in power.

Even if every single 16/17 votes Labour at the next GE, it won't be enough to keep Labour in power if the majoroty of the rest of the electorate want them out. 16/17 year olds are out numbered by the grey vote for a start.
