To find it annoying when people refer to their children or partners by their initial

“Just dropped S off at dance class” - just say Sofia, it’s not a long name!!
”D will be home later from work” - why?!!

YABU. I can understand not wanting your own name to be shortened like this, but can’t get my head round being annoyed by what other people do.

So many of you would hate me.

We sometimes refer to the DC by their first initial f2f as well as via text🤣🤣🤣

Plus they both have shit loads of nicknames🤣🤣

Most people (possibly inc the DC) don’t even know my DH name is an initial and not his real name.

It always sounds weird when he calls me by my name as he rarely uses it to the point I’ve not realised he’s talking about me 🤣🤣

J or K then? 😂

Noseylittlemoo · 16/07/2025 22:55

I refer to my husband as his initials both in a text and verbally . Eg if it was CJ I would refer to him as CJ and call him CJ.
Slightly veering off topic I knew someone who had the word ASDA in sort of gothic script tattooed on his arm. I asked about it once and it was apparently his parents, brother and his initials...

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/07/2025 23:00

I would do initials in a text message but not in spoken conversation. I am also in the habit because of safeguarding at my job where children are only referred to in documents by their initial.

DryDay · 16/07/2025 23:00

I do this in texts - it’s just shorthand.
Although I never put anything like ‘How R U’ - I find that such a turn-off.

Didimum · 16/07/2025 23:01

It’s so inconsequential. I can’t see why it matters at all.

It irritates me too - but in always thought I was being irrational. The worst is a long text with lots of them in - like ‘I’ll drop B off before getting S and then I’ll be back in time for A&A to come for dinner’..: what the fuck are you talking about

TheBestSpoon · 16/07/2025 20:56

Oh dear, we've always done this in my family, to the extent that I'm now known by my initial to most of my friends. I didn't realize it was such a social faux pas - it's just our version of a nickname / shortening...

It's perfectly nitmak. So what if a few internet randoms find it annoying?!

CoastalCalm · 16/07/2025 23:10

I actually use my initial as my name , it feels odd when my husband uses my full name

Berlinlover · 16/07/2025 23:13

MyUmberSeal · 16/07/2025 20:52

It annoys me when people put DH and DS and all that shit on here. Just say husband, son, daughter. What’s with the ‘Dear’ bit. So yes, in solidarity..I sympathise.

Edited

I agree, it’s very annoying.

GuiltyPleasure · 16/07/2025 23:21

At work everyone uses my initial as my name. I actually prefer it as I’m not fond of my name and it’s a nicer diminutive to me than the usual shortened versions of my name

MalcolmMoo · 16/07/2025 23:21

I do this with my dogs haha! Call them L and D in conversation, I think more though so they don’t hear their names and start getting excited especially around dinner time!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/07/2025 23:23

I do this all the time with my daughter or ex

peers through phone

do I know you 😂

really can’t see the issue

Nt23 · 16/07/2025 23:25

I get irrationally annoyed by people who post about insignificant things that annoy them irrationally.

SALaw · 16/07/2025 23:32

I find it extremely irritating. Also people text or email me “Hi S” - urgh use my name. It’s 4 letters

Yes especially when so many get it wrong or Tur themselves in knots distinguishing between their son and sister etc

I find it extremely irritating when people miss full stops from the end of sentences.

I really hate that as well! I can't see why someone can't just say my husband or my son particularly given predictive text. As for the people who say DDOG...

SALaw · 17/07/2025 06:37

@Nt23 .

WitcheryDivine · 17/07/2025 07:54

I find calling a child “10” or whatever annoying but not at all annoyed by initial, hence doing it sometimes myself. it’s very normal shorthand. Even at work there might be a note saying “C to meet JW at station”, it’s the same as that to me. I never call people by their initial out loud.

SupposesRoses · 17/07/2025 08:14

When people do this for their husbands I assume it’s because they don’t really like their name. I don’t encounter it much for children though.

Me too. Especially when someone is talking about multiple family members so DS could potentially be a son or a sister and DP could be a partner or a parent. And don't get me started on DDog and DCat...

TimeForABreak4 · 17/07/2025 08:30

I do it in messages for speed, couldn't give a flying fuck who it irritates. It amuses me at the small inconsequential things people get annoyed by in life, glad I'm not so uptight.

That's true - at work all the agenda items say "JS to report to GB".
