To find it annoying when people refer to their children or partners by their initial

“Just dropped S off at dance class” - just say Sofia, it’s not a long name!!
”D will be home later from work” - why?!!

I tend to refer to my dc as Child Number 1 (or 2,3,4), particularly when I’m talking to people who don’t know them. I’m sure this is far more annoying than using an initial - which wouldn’t work anyway, as I have duplicates.

We do biggest and smallest. Or various other nicknames and diminutives.

drspouse · 16/07/2025 21:19

My DCs have 9 and 8 letter names. You're going to have to bear with me while I double the length of all my messages.

GlastoNinja · 16/07/2025 21:26

I fecking hate when people call their kids by nicknames that they named them during pregnancy. Bean, Bear etc…. They’re an actual human now, give over with it.

🤣🤣 this reminds me of my mate when she was pregnant 4 years ago. It was her first and she called the baby peanut all the time, my little peanut this, my little peanut that. She even got a keying made saying ‘mummy’s little peanut coming soon’. Every time she said it, it made a little bit of sick come up in my mouth.

Thank fuck she stopped when the baby was born.

AnotherNaCha · 16/07/2025 21:35

Geez, I find this a very small thing to get wound up about. My ex partner was called by his initial as a nickname by his entire family and I couldn’t have cared less.

This however I totally agree with being annoyed by

BunnyLake · 16/07/2025 21:36

What about Dee? It just sounds like D but is a shortened version of various names.

I didn’t do it my children but I have known two people who were referred to as D.

BettyCrockerClinic · 16/07/2025 21:38

My grandparents had a friend universally known as H - to the point that I’ve just realised I’ve no idea what his full name was.

Lyocell · 16/07/2025 21:40

I do this to my friends children as they all have long and annoying names to write like Aurora, Sebastian, jemima

ita easier for me to just say A S or J

BananaCaramel · 16/07/2025 21:41

I do this in WhatsApp etc if I am referring to several couples or family groups…eg. C&C are coming so are ASME; I wouldn’t do it out loud though!

Ace56 · 16/07/2025 21:42

In texts I think it’s absolutely fine. Out loud, it would irritate me too.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 16/07/2025 21:43

A few of my friends refer to their children by their ages, e.g. "I took 10 to dance class." It irritates me to an irrational degree but they are otherwise sane and non-annoying people.

PassingStranger · 16/07/2025 21:46

TourdeFrance25 · 16/07/2025 20:53

You can be as (quietly) annoyed as you like 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it's a weird thing to be annoyed by.

Yes first world problems.

Abra1t · 16/07/2025 21:51

We call my daughter by her surname initial because at nursery there were two girls with her first name and they referred to her as Milly B (not real name but would give you an idea.)

My husband was tickled by this and called her it at home and eventually it just became 'Bee'. IT's stuck to a degree in our nuclear family.

Before I even got to the end of the first paragraph I could feel the vomit rising, then I read the last sentence and felt validated

AutumnLeaves95 · 16/07/2025 21:52

Absolutely, I’m part of a mum group and some people do this, it’s so annoying! Mind you, I also hate the whole DH/DC thing

merrymelody · 16/07/2025 21:52

TheBestSpoon · 16/07/2025 20:56

Oh dear, we've always done this in my family, to the extent that I'm now known by my initial to most of my friends. I didn't realize it was such a social faux pas - it's just our version of a nickname / shortening...

It’s not! 😂

Loadsapandas · 16/07/2025 21:53

So many of you would hate me.

We sometimes refer to the DC by their first initial f2f as well as via text🤣🤣🤣

Plus they both have shit loads of nicknames🤣🤣

Most people (possibly inc the DC) don’t even know my DH name is an initial and not his real name.

It always sounds weird when he calls me by my name as he rarely uses it to the point I’ve not realised he’s talking about me 🤣🤣

GlastoNinja · 16/07/2025 22:05

Husband is know fairly universally by a nickname - including by me for 30 years. Our wedding ceremony used his nickname except the official bit which had to be his proper name. Someone recently said ‘Ben said….’ I said who’s Ben? They said ‘your husband’ 🤣 genuinely had no clue.

Driftingawaynow · 16/07/2025 22:10

I do it. Saves energy and also avoid having to bother to learn how to spell mates kids weird names

Oh my god- what??!! This is NOT an irrational irritation!!

MyUmberSeal · 16/07/2025 20:52

It annoys me when people put DH and DS and all that shit on here. Just say husband, son, daughter. What’s with the ‘Dear’ bit. So yes, in solidarity..I sympathise.

Edited

This comment wins 🤣

Wonderwoman333 · 16/07/2025 22:27

I also find this so annoying, just type their names out! Makes me cringe

verycloakanddaggers · 16/07/2025 22:34

It's just one of those things some people do, does it matter?

I'm a live and let live type, think it's quite weird to care.

Springadorable · 16/07/2025 22:36

Verbally - weird. In text - totally fine.
