To not really want to better myself

😫😫

I'm supposed to be reading more books, learning other languages and to play an instrument, lose weight

All I wanna do is lay down, look at tiktok videos and offer my opinion on mumsnet whilst watching classic holby city and eating biscuits

I think I'll be fat and gossipy with a 10 second attention span forever

Does anyone relate or have any advice 😪😄

Nowt wrong with being a work in progress.

TwiceForLunch · 16/07/2025 21:11

I call it 'I am having an attack of raging apathy'.

However, FWIW I love cooking. So am thinking about starting a youtube cooking channel. Can you do something like that? Sounds more immediately satisfying than learning an instrument IMO.

I only discovered it on the last series (I know, I'm literally so embarrassed about that!) I'm now on series 9 so a few more to go! I love it!

Currently on the programme with the new young Dr who seems to be stealing pethidine ...

It’s my Christmas evening tradition watching the special with a baileys and cheese board! The earlier ones are by far the best!

H0ldmybeer · 16/07/2025 21:33

The struggle is real. Don't be too hard on yourself, though, you may not always felt like this. Maybe just embrace for now? 😜

EmeraldShamrock000 · 16/07/2025 22:47

Learn a few generic responses to use on the local community, until you learn the lingo. 😅
Enjoy your posh grapes.
Tomorrow is another day. 💐

It was apparently being used in an offensive way - I saw a poster say they had posted about their disability and some poster(s) had given the post laughing emojis - that sort of horrid thing. I do miss it though

Oh, thank you. That makes sense, shame though.

manicpixieschemegirl · 16/07/2025 20:24

Some people were using it to laugh at posts they thought were stupid/wrong.

Thank you, that never occurred to me. I thought it odd on Mum to suddenly become the laugh police.

Unless you think you're going to have to squeeze through a tiny gap to rescue an abandoned kitten, luring it out of hiding by playing the clarinet, using a technique you read in a book in Mandarin, none of those things will make you a better person. Do what you like, harm no one and do good for people when you can, and that's good enough.

I appoint you God ♥️

WideOpenBeaches · 18/07/2025 06:53

I did both…. Taught myself to crochet so I could watch tv (MAFS Aus version) and learn something new.

It also had the added benefit of being slightly addictive and keeping my hands busy so I didn’t eat QUITE so many biscuits.

But that was lockdown. A different era!

You'd hate me- I want to do all the things: read all the books, listen to all the music, play more instruments, know more languages, do more in the gym. I do a little bit of everything- work just gets in the way and encroaches far too much on my life.

No you sound amazing and I want to be you 😭

Edit, in theory - id pin you to my Pinterest board on a Sunday night and then get on mumsnet to see what's happening and be completely distracted 😪😅

You sound like my kind of person OP. Although for me, I'm watching Call the Midwife and eating spicy Cheetos 😜

Omg i love call the midwife! I raise your spicy Cheetos with giant wotsits! Delish ☺️

People were using it to mock eachother lol. Typical.

I don't think it's menopause because I've been exactly like this since I was 20 OP haha.

Honestly just do the best you can. I do yoga and am fit now, I wasn't, my weight will fluctuate, I'll try and I'll slip again. It's a normal cycle.

If you can bare it uninstall the social media apps though, I'm much happier without them. I'm not a jealous person or anything like that I just find so much more from existing in the real world as much as possible.

I did delete tiktok and stay off mumsnet for a while but lo and behold, here I am again 😭

Can't believe gregg Wallace and John torode are both off of masterchef - when I heard the news i was lost without discussing it on mn

I’m supposed to be organising my house room by room and selling all my old stuff on Vinted but I’m currently spending all my evenings drinking rose and playing Animal
Crossing so I can get a bigger house thank my kids

😄😄😄 - this sounds acceptable in my book but what do I know

With a to do list like that I think anyone would want to lie down

You probably don’t just want to watch Holby, but maybe pick one thing you really want to do (not think you should do) and try that

Its true, i'm gonna focus on eating less, thats the most important thing

Dumb and thin is the goal 😄😌

I was thinking of a cooking tiktok page where I narrate my basic recipes in french!

I love a YouTube cooking channel, definitely do it x

Watch films or series of books
or just new stuff on tv - so much now (depending on your subscriptions) must be something new out there

that’s expanding your culture input whilst varying very little

i buy books - I like buying books - I like buying books thinking I will enjoy reading that - so I have stopped buying books and am attempting the reading bit of the procedure now!

Literally watching The white lotus, season 3, as i ran out of holby city episodes 😄

I've bought a few books which are gathering dust, will try and read harry potter 6 at least

This is a good idea - maybe i can try only watching holby while I organise something in my flat 🤷‍♀️

Mafsau is epic tv!

If you're feeling like that, firstly I'd question whether you really want to be doing any of those things or just feel that you should be?

If you really do want to be doing those things but aren't, I'd suggest you're suffering from bit of burn out and that you need some zoning out time at the moment.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/07/2025 18:09

Try doing an online/in person course? It's easier than trying to choose books for yourself or learning a language yourself. If you really want to, of course. I did the OU in my youth, but wouldn't have the energy for it and working now.

NotCrazyAboutIt · 21/07/2025 18:25

Well, it doesn’t have to be either/or, surely. I am someone who reads obsessively (and very fast — I could read three or four novels in a day), loves learning languages and speaks five well, but can certainly also watch crap tv and be idle.

This, but also, i realised that I wanted to be someone who could speak another language, which is not the same as wanting to learn another language! Once this dawned on me, I looked at other things I wanted to do and questioned the motivation. Now i watch TV and eat biscuits with an easier conscience.
