What would you use 'extra' rooms for in your house?

If your house had a big kitchen, living room and a seperate dining room what would you use the other rooms for?

In a dreamland, what would make you happy, and do you think your partner or family would agree?

For me I think I would love a library room. Comfy sofa, various throws, loads of books with a ladder that attaches to the bookshelves.. I also quite like the idea of a cinema room, but that feels like something we'd use less often, especially with how big the normal televisions are now. That just feels like another living room to me...

What would you do, if you had the space?

I have 2 spare bedrooms. One is now a gym and the other is a sewing room.

Overnight guests are not encouraged.

Our previous house had 3 ‘reception rooms’ we used one for a lounge, one a dining room and one for a snug for the kids - sofa/TV books etc. I miss that house!

We’re moving from a tiny house (2 rooms downstairs, 2 bedrooms and bathroom) to a pretty big one (praying all goes ahead smoothly due to exchange next week!)

We will have an ‘extra’ room downstairs which we plan to use as a playroom - or at least just to store all DC’s stuff. There’s a room to be DH’s office/ study too. 4 beds upstairs - one of which I will make into my office but would like to give it a bit of a library/ reading corner/ cosy type vibe too. Just my space - in fact I might continue to work from the kitchen table as I currently do and make the ‘office room’ just a bit of space for me!

Once we’re in and have hopefully started to build up savings again DH is planning to convert the garage into some kind of separate lounge/ man cave situation but I am reluctant to give up the storage having gone so long without any!

We have a large sunroom (40ft x 15ft) attached to the kitchen/dining room and it’s my favourite room, second to my sewing room.

It has two sets of French doors and plenty of windows and a roof light in the centre. Because it’s got triple glazing and is well insulated inc. the roof, we use it all yr round. It doesn’t get too hot either, although I live in Ireland and we rarely get heat waves here. 😂

We have an extra room downstairs, it’s used as the grandkids toy room and it has a sofa bed and a tv in there with a huge built in wall cupboard with bookshelves so it’s multi purpose

When my husband and I bought our current house we were planning to have 3 or 4 children (still hope to). So we bought a larger house than we needed as a couple.

Currently we have one toddler and multiple extra rooms.

This gives us

  • a library (we had to have the shelving built in)
  • A play area for my toddlers toys to be mostly out of sight when not in use
  • Guest bedroom
  • Study

We then have bedrooms for my husband and I, one bedroom for just me I used when pregnant and uncomfortable or when having a difficult night with the baby, and a nursery for our 1 year old.

Actually if we are talking totally unrealistically; I’d love to have a 100 seat theatre.
My am-drams group is going to be left high and dry before not too long. If we could have our own space to rehearsal with a proper stage and it’s all mine, that would be amazing!

I am a single person and am lucky enough to have a 4 bedroom house. I use them for:

master bedroom
office
dressing room / clothes storage
And the last bedroom I rent out for some extra income

GRex · 17/07/2025 08:04

I was happy with my extra rooms, but now I want to add an orangerie and a games room.

yogpot · 17/07/2025 08:15

Husband and I both have a separate office/dressing room. Husband also has a gaming space in his office. I have a comfy love seat for reading but no tv.

Downstairs I’ve just turned our guest room into a hangout space for the kids (eldest just turned 13) - sofa bed, storage, TV, games console style thing.

Sauna 😁

Ideal house, Slightly sensible option...

Downstairs:

Big open plan kitchen diner
Livingroom
Play room
Study
Utility room
Toilet
Garage

Upstairs
5 bedrooms
At least 2 bathrooms (Ideally 2 en suites and 1 main bath)

Now money is no object:
Gym
Cinema / games room (think pool table, bar party room)
Pool
Sauna
Laundry room
Library

A dedicated present wrapping room with everything permanently out on tables and wall racks with a huge assortment of wrapping supplies.
