What would you use 'extra' rooms for in your house?

If your house had a big kitchen, living room and a seperate dining room what would you use the other rooms for?

In a dreamland, what would make you happy, and do you think your partner or family would agree?

For me I think I would love a library room. Comfy sofa, various throws, loads of books with a ladder that attaches to the bookshelves.. I also quite like the idea of a cinema room, but that feels like something we'd use less often, especially with how big the normal televisions are now. That just feels like another living room to me...

What would you do, if you had the space?

We have an extra room downstairs, which is/was a playroom. Kids are a bit older now so it’s got all the books in, a sofa and our piano. And a few toys.

Magpie50 · 16/07/2025 07:28

I have 2 bedrooms I don't need so the smaller one is a combination storage room (I tend to bulk buy things I use) and drying space so my dehumidifier and clothes airers are out of the way.
Second, bigger bedroom is a combination gym, library and dressing room! I have fitted wardrobes all down one side, exercise bike and weights on another and a huge floor to ceiling bookcase and 2 original 1930s art deco armchairs by the window.

Offcom · 16/07/2025 07:28

A contemplation room, very beautiful and designed specifically for doing nothing much at all.

Everythingisokay · 16/07/2025 07:29

I would have a playroom, crafts room, reading room, an office and maybe a little gym 🤩

Passthecake30 · 16/07/2025 07:30

I’d like a spare room to wfh in, rather than the kitchen table. Also another one, to house more rescue rabbits.

MiddleAgedDread · 16/07/2025 07:30

Would like:
large kitchen / diner
living room
downstairs loo
utility room with space for outdoor kit storage
master bedroom and ensuite
guest bedroom, maybe 2
office with a desk and another table for crafts, jigsaw etc and lots of space for books
gym

so if anyone knows tonight’s lottery numbers……

MayBeee · 16/07/2025 07:32

I'd need a much bigger house , so being greedy .

Extra bedroom so I could have my own , it would be bliss .
Extra small room off that as a walk in wardrobe .
My own bathroom
Extra room for crafting .
A library / reading room
A big workshop / barn for dh for his hobbies in the garden .

DilemmaDelilah · 16/07/2025 07:32

In an itch deal world where money was no object?

A therapy room where I could have massages/my hair done etc.
A room for my dolls houses
A craft room
A room for DH to do whatever it is he likes doing (for all his junk)
An office/study
A reading room
A dressing room each
An orangery/winter garden
Another 3 bedrooms with an suites

In reality:
Our dining room is in our conservatory so I would like a proper dining room so that I could use the conservatory as a conservatory
Another 2 bedrooms for guests (or at least another 1)
A dressing room
An en suite for my room

meganorks · 16/07/2025 07:33

If we ever by a new house I would like:

  • A separate living room for the kids where they can watch what they want and hang out with their noisy mates
  • A utilty room
  • A downstairs loo
  • A garage or a hallway big enough to build a cupboard for DHs bike

Added things that I would love

  • A downstairs office so the dog can come in
  • A room for gym equipment that DH never uses
  • A lego room (our box room was one but it became a dumping ground.)
  • A boot room (because we just seem to have too many shoes and coats!)
Ginmonkeyagain · 16/07/2025 07:33

I'd like a utility room but apart from that I am fine with our two bed flat. More rooms is just more.places to clean and maintain and more places to accumulate stuff.

Ruelzdontapplyhere · 16/07/2025 07:36

Craft room for everyone to keep all the crafts stuff in one place instead of projects all over the place.
Or a toy room.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/07/2025 07:37

Library room, it can be small but cannot have a TV. The most important rule is that I cannot be disturbed in there.

We have a spare room, a converted attic space with ensuite. We have a pull out guest bed. There's lots of gym equipment there and a big wall mounted TV. Dh and ds1 use it to work out sometimes, younger kids use it for sleepovers or when they are hanging out with friends. Our home office is on a large half landing on the way. The long term plan is for DS1 to move up there

DomesticDispute · 16/07/2025 07:38

I have a library! It's absolutely what I dreamed of as a kid.
The reality is I don't read anything like as much as I once did. I don't buy or keep books, thankfully at the rate I once did.
It's away from the family so I couldn't use it when home alone with the kids.
The thing that also compromised the library, dHs office and every other room is storage absence or stuff creep.
So we are building an extension but I'm less excited about the two bedrooms more about the
Bootroom through to laundry area, this is the big deal

An attic, shelves, lit and purely for stuff, memories, camping, luggage, spare linen.
This will allow other rooms to be what they are not mixed.

rainbowunicorn22 · 16/07/2025 07:38

we live in a very small terraced house which in theory should be ok for two but we have constant rows over the muddles and mess! biggest problem is my partner runs a business from home which involves lots of messy prep all over the kitchen which makes an awful mess plus takes up so much room. in the poky kitchen he has a massive storage unit plus has to use my cooker for drying so the oven is always full. ideally id like another kitchen just a nice small one with a decent set of units nice table and chairs a pristine place just with my own cooker!
the lounge suffers the same fate especially with me doing selling online too its always like an obstacle course and a source of great embarrassment when people come so ideally a tidy lounge a 2nd lounge with a big set of book shelves we do not have tv anyway so not bothered with that but a comfy 3 piece suite not the hip breaking back breaking sofa we have now.
a craft room would be a great boom but also a nice room or ideally a shed aka Masons Cavies on TikTok or fb so i can go back to rescuing guinea pigs

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/07/2025 07:38

Also another one, to house more rescue rabbits.

Yep, definitely a pet room as currently my rabbits live under the dining table (which i dont eat at but would like the option!). And where the parrot could sleep at night. Needs to open into both the garden and the sitting room.

Also a downstairs office and a utility room.

Londonrach1 · 16/07/2025 07:38

The garage when we bought our house has been turned into an extra room ..it's the playroom / dumping place. Not sure it would have worked as a garage as the entrance would be impossible to get into as it's on a steep hill but miss having a garage

MyOtherProfile · 16/07/2025 07:41

We have two extra rooms downstairs as well as our lounge, kitchen and dining room. One is a study with floor to ceiling bookshelves on one wall and a large desk. The other is a second lounge but with our musical instruments. The teens use this when they have friends over. We do have a spare bedroom upstairs too but when we don't have anyone staying it's where the laundry gets dumped.

Humanswarm · 16/07/2025 07:41

If I were being utterly selfish, I'd have a library/study/craft room. A room totally for me to read and craft away from the chaos of the rest of the house. I also think, family wise, a laundry room would help with organisation, there's currently washing everywhere whilst it goes through the various stages. And if ai were feeling really generous, maybe I'd say the kids could have their own chill out room, negating the need to listen to incessant YouTube reels in the front room!

TroysMammy · 16/07/2025 07:50

A room downstairs would be a walk in pantry and food prep area which also would have shelving for world cuisine. I would have an area for Indian ingredients and utensils eg my chapati rolling pin, balti dishes, kulfi moulds etc. One for Italian ingredients, my pasta maker, drying rack etc. One for Japanese, sushi kit etc and Middle Eastern cuisine. An area for bread maker, slow cooker. Oh I can see it now.

Upstairs a fitted craft room for card making and sewing in white with pale pink walls and panda decor.

DinoLil · 16/07/2025 07:51

I've got two spare bedrooms. One is a guest room/study. The other has a large wardrobe, a trunk full of crafting stuff and a put-you-up bed in case of extra guests staying.

I've also got a converted attic room. That will become my crafting room but I need to kit it out with cupboards and a worktop first.

Lulu1919 · 16/07/2025 07:54

A kind of utility ...if there wasn't one already
Ironing board always up
Posh iron
Couple of clothes airers.
Washing machines etc

CremeBruhlee · 16/07/2025 07:55

Separate office room with room for one workers desk and desk space next to it for a kid to do homework. Also in this room piano and instruments and wall to wall bookshelves but no TV. It’s been perfect for getting homework done with little to no distractions and adult can watch but do admin/finish work bits. Don’t underestimate having a ‘spare room’ without a bed. It’s really handy for laying out clothes and cases for holidays. Doing ironing away from other rooms etc. Ours has weights bench in too

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 16/07/2025 07:55

i have a library but we work so much we don’t have chance to use it. I don’t think I’ve ever sat down and read a book in there. It’s just become yet another dumping ground.

I would like a gym. The room we use as a utility was used as a gym by the previous owner. It’s small and right next to the living room - who wants to hear someone working out while they’re sat on the sofa?

id also like a playroom so the kids’ toys are contained to one room. And a craft room but I don’t have any talent so that would be a waste of a room 😄

KnickerlessParsons · 16/07/2025 07:55

I would like an extra living room on the other side of the house so there’s always one room that gets the sun in it.
Also a play room, and a dedicated office for when I wfh.
upstairs I would like a separate room where I could keep my clothes and get dressed (so dressing room).

KnickerlessParsons · 16/07/2025 07:56

Oh, and maybe a music room.
