Was it the chicken or the wine?

About a month ago I had some chicken legs and some wine and the following day I had excruciating pain in my upper abdomen all day, it came and went in waves.

Looking it up it sounded like either Campylobacter from the children or pancreatitis from the wine.
Fast forward a month and I had some more chicken and wine and the next day got exactly the same pain for the whole day.
Is it more likely to be the chicken or the wine?

If it was campylobacter, it wouldn’t just last a day. Pancreatitis seems a bit severe also. Maybe it’s some sort of intolerance?

CherryYellowCouch · 15/07/2025 12:52

Can I suggest you just stop combining the two?

Properly cooked chicken shouldn’t make you ill.

Perhaps red wine just doesn’t agree with you.

BeanQuisine · 15/07/2025 12:52

Try having chicken without wine, and wine without chicken, and see what happens.

It was white wine but I’ve never had a problem with wine or chicken in the past.

Exactly what @BeanQuisine says.
Have you not had chicken (or wine) between these 2 occasions?

NuffSaidSam · 15/07/2025 12:54

You need to try each individually, but my guess would be the wine. I think it's quite rare to have a chicken intolerance, whereas wine doesn't agree with lots of people.

CherryYellowCouch · 15/07/2025 12:55

Was it the same type of white wine each time?

MsTamborineMan · 15/07/2025 12:58

Have you tried just chicken and just wine?

No I haven’t but plenty of times in the past.
The chicken was cooked thoroughly in an air fryer and the wine was opened the same day it was served.

I thought the first time it had to be one of the two as I’d never had that sort of pain before also diarrhoea (sorry) then I felt the same distinct feeling a month later and realised I’d also had both the night before.

Yes no problem then.

I honestly can’t remember what wine it was before but it was white both times.

Yes no problem then.

So you only get it when it is a combination of the two?

Can I ask, was it the same dish from the same recipe each time? Could there be some other ingredients used in this dish that might be the issue?

mediummumma · 15/07/2025 13:03

My DH has a really bad reaction to chicken and cider. He can have either separately but together he has tummy cramps, pain and diarrhoea. It sounds as if it’s the combination of wine and chicken together that is the issue for you, so best to avoid consuming these items together.

Sounds like it's the combination if you can eat or drink both individually.

AllPlayedOut · 15/07/2025 13:06

It may the combination of fat and acid. I have GERD and I can have (somewhat) spicy food and I can enjoy coffee or soda but I can never combine spicy food and coffee or soda even if consumed on the same day but many hours apart, I can still have problems. Was it chicken legs the second time too?

GERD might be a possibility or gall bladder issues. I’d keep a food diary.

DarkForces · 15/07/2025 13:06

Having had campylobacter I can promise you it's not that. Took me a lot longer than a day to fully get over it when I caught it and takes 1-10 days from eating to onset. Reminded me of being in labour

TheBewleySisters · 15/07/2025 13:07

Gallbladder issues maybe?

I felt like I was in labour all night and the next day, sharp pains in upper abdomen coming in waves and really took my breath away.

Possibly, if it was then this would be from the wine I imagine.

OP posts:
SoftandQuiet · 15/07/2025 13:13

Sounds more gallbladder but that would be from fat. As others have said, you need a food and symptoms diary

DiscoBob · 15/07/2025 13:14

Pancreatitis is agonising and potentially fatal. It's not something where you get abdominal cramps after having a couple glasses of alcohol.
If the chicken had anything like campo it would make you violently unwell for days.

Was there spicing on the chicken? Plain chicken fully cooked is perfectly safe. You may have developed an intolerance to it and wine though.

What happens if you have one but not the other?

Lougle · 15/07/2025 13:18

It could be your gallbladder. It's possible that it can cope with chicken (fat) on its own and it can cope with wine (alcohol) on its own, but both together overloads it.

Keepyourheartopenandyoureyeswideshut · 15/07/2025 13:19

I have IBS and SIBO.

I have never been able to tolerate alcohol so completely avoid it now but was fine with chicken until around 4 years ago, the next day I will suffer from an awful stomach. I am not sure quite why this happens but I have been looking into MCAS and histamine intolerance recently, I think for me, chicken exacerbates this issue. It's noted a low histamine but quite a few people on the support groups I am on have issues with chicken too.

janeandmarysmum · 15/07/2025 13:40

Lots of noro type bugs around. Campylobacter and pancreatitis are quite extreme suspicions.

Maybe, I just typed my symptoms into the ADA app and that’s what it came up with.
