To not take coats and boots to Scotland

Floweryfandango · 15/07/2025 07:41

We live in Cornwall and have never been to Scotland as a family.

Going up for the first two weeks in August and DH and I can't agree on whether the children (primary-aged) will need coats and wellies. We have a very limited luggage allowance.

Will be doing some city stuff and some countryside walks, though nothing too ambitious.

I think we need mid-season coats, raincoats, trainers and wellies. DH thinks we'll be fine with just raincoats and trainers.

AIBU to pack all this stuff?

It was in the high 20s wall to wall sunshine here in my part of Scotland all weekend. Yesterday it bucketed it down all day and today looks to be the same. I wouldn't say wellies are absolutely necessary but would bring two pairs of decent trainers or walking shoes each, and decent raincoats (waterproof, not showerproof).

Not near Elgin are you? We arrived yesterday having overnighted in Glasgow so we could have a gander at the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies. Didn’t even get out of the car at the Wheel, as DH didn’t bring a coat. A bit better with the horsies, and then we had a cuppa in the cafe but the whole journey north was raining like heck and then we got stuck near the Nairn/Forres junction because Moray Council were removing some trees after the fires on the Moor.

Couldn’t believe the extent of the burn, and yet not reported on the news.

I’m just outside Glasgow, I’d describe it as warm and wet currently, so I’d say light raincoats and trainers . Unless you’re a very chilly person no to warm jumpers! I’m out today in cropped trousers and a sweat shirt. And an umbrella 🤣

Corknut · 15/07/2025 09:53

Bring raincoats and probably a sturdy trainer. It will rain, it’s Scotland

TheLemonLemur · 15/07/2025 09:53

We live in Scotland unless it was freak weather (that can happen anywhere) I wouldnt anticipate needing wellies. A light waterproof jacket will be fine - if the weather is that bad nip to shops for a cheap pair I think primark had some in sale section as out of season

whiterabbity · 15/07/2025 09:53

I live in Scotland. You need them.

Sahara123 · 15/07/2025 09:53

Oh, and the weekend was absolutely sweltering !

Morgenrot25 · 15/07/2025 09:54

Light waterproof walking boots.
Light water and windproof jackets (and potentially trousers (they roll up small)).
Clothes that can be layered or not - quick dry fabrics are good.
Sun cream.
Midge spray.

Really? ! I don’t remember the last time I wore wellies except maybe my snow boots. On the one snow day we had last winter !

Mrsmessyhairdontcare · 15/07/2025 09:58

Where in Scotland are you going?? I live in Scotland (central) and my kids don't own wellies. Trainers and light rain coat. My kids are in shorts and t-shirt just now as weather has been really good. I can predict as someone else said when our kids go back to school it will be glorious sunshine.. it happens every year.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/07/2025 10:02

Just raincoats is fine so long as they’ve got a fleece or jumper to layer under if it’s chilly. (I use a fairly light gortex jacket year round with appropriate layering).
footwear really depends on the paths - are they likely to be muddy or boggy? In which case walking boots are better than wellies if they have them. But children don’t die of wet feet - trainers are probably ok so long as they’ve got other footwear and you can dry wet shoes

Diggetydawg · 15/07/2025 10:13

I live in Scotland and the weather isn't nearly as bad as people make out. Unless i'm hardened to it ! I have never worn a jumper in August, I normally don't bring them out until November. It does rain a lot so I would bring a lightweight jacket, a cagoule type thing and just trainers. The last time I wore wellies was to an outdoor concert, it's not that bad here.

Thanks all. Think I'm settled on raincoats and layers for the top then.

For the feet less sure. It's fine for me and DH as we'll bring our walking shoes and normal shoes. For the children, they don't actually have walking shoes so was thinking their trainers for that (as they're about ready for the bin anyway) and then some sandals, but maybe they need two pairs of proper shoes.

I would get them some walking shoes and not take the trainers. They can wear their walking shoes instead of their trainers and that way you're covered for all weather.

I get the DCs walking boots/ shoes from Vinted, as they're quite an expense for fast growing feet. For a trip with limited luggage I'd normally pack crocs or flip flops, and get them to wear the walking shoes. And a pair of their favourite "cool" trainers like Vans if there's room. The only problem is that it's surprisingly difficult to get properly waterproof walking shoes or boots for DC 🙄

crazeekat · 15/07/2025 10:22

You will cope with trainers, but I would defo bring like a Mac in a pack for the rain and a hoodie. I had my heating on last week for 4 days in a row.

This. Don't really understand why this needs four pages and a poll. It's not a trek across the Antarctic.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/07/2025 10:34

just wondering if you can get waterproof socks in kids sizes, maybe they’d be a good idea if waterproof shoes are hard to find, would last a few sizes?
Not that the op is particularly to encounter too much damp on this trip, more a general thought.

What's a waterproof sock? Unless you put a plastic bag on your kids feet no sock is going to be waterproof.

Panda89 · 15/07/2025 10:37

I just landed in Edinburgh from the south west and it’s raining, and due to rain every day for the foreseeable further (according to Apple weather!)
Its not cold though, so I would say light raincoats and trainers are fine.

InterestedBeing · 15/07/2025 10:37

Tried to post a link to water proof kids shoes but won't show up.

Maybe we are just used to it i don't think the weather is as bad as people expect, I get it might be a bit cooler but it in August it isn't the middle of winter and because it is north it is lighter longer.

I live in Scotland. Bring cosy things. Summer can sometimes reach a balmy 13 degrees.
