Told that I'm 'always' travelling.

The thing is I'm really not and not sure why it matters.
Last month I went abroad for 10 days which involved staying in 1 country for 5 days then getting the train over the border to another for the remaining.

3 months prior to that I went on a city break for 3 days. 4 months prior to that I stayed with a relative abroad for 3 days.

Each time I do the holidays quite cheaply, flights are pretty much cheaper than the cost of a meal out! Accommodation is usually cheap too.

The thing is when the friends say this they don't follow it by anything positive or ask about it, they just make blanket statements about how I'm 'always' doing xyz.

I think it's a mentality thing too, I once went abroad for a night very cheaply but for some people that wouldn't be an option and that's fine, these friends would go somewhere for a week or two weeks like somewhere long haul and hot and wouldn't think to just go to a city for a couple of days or something.

Both are fine, I just don't understand why they have to always comment on what I'm doing and see it as odd.

It is a bit odd to comment like this when you haven't mentioned it and only posted a couple of pictures online.

Otherwise I would say they were indicating they were bored hearing about it (if they were like me and found talk of others travels quite dull...) - but clearly that isn't the case.

Might just be one of their 'stock phrases' at the moment [you're ALWAYS...]. One of my colleagues regularly comments 'are you STILL doing that task?!' when it makes no sense. e.g. I am 35 mins into a job that takes 1 hour minimum. Or I started a job that takes 3-4 hours an hour before I left one day, and then she sees me working on it still first thing in the morning. Irritating but I just put it down as a poor attempt at conversation/pointless filler/lack of reasoning. Maybe she is trying to undermine me but...that isn't working.

I would be tempted to hide this friend from seeing your travel photos, if you can easily (e.g. facebook).

notacooldad · 15/07/2025 11:27

I am the same as you. I do shift work so get a block of days off together. As soon as I see my rota im on Kayak or Skyscanner to see where I can go.
Sometimes my friends who are retired might come Sometimes if my Dhs work is quiet and its a weekend he will but I often go alone.
I book cheap flights, not bothered about seats etc
Some mates comment but they like doing other things. They do what they like and I spend my money on what I like.

Incidentally I said this on a thread yesterday and someone assumed i was a young bloke who was away with their mates all the time so my opinion wasn't wanted 😆

I love having my main holidays with Dh but I love taking my rucksack and ending up in a city in Germany or a town in Norway etc. I like seeing the world through a different lens. Ive been doing this for 40 years, since before I met Dh so im not going to stop now. The thing that has changed is air travel has got cheaper and more flexible.

This will make you laugh, the people that eye roll at me going on holiday once told me they buy 3 large jars of nutella every week (£18) and they get a £100 domino's every Friday.
It's laughable how they haven't figured out priorities in life and have the cheek to think I shouldn't spend my money travelling!

TheSoapyFrog · 15/07/2025 11:33

As someone who loves travelling, but has only had one week in the UK as a holiday in the last 10 years, it would seem like you're always travelling to me! It's an observation. Much like when a friend said "you're always gardening" to me after I spoke about yet another new plant I acquired. I actually spend a very small percentage of my life gardening, but to someone who never does gardening, it probably seems like a lot!

I do suspect it's because they're not particularly interested in gardening, but felt the need to respond in some way.

However, if you were to tell me about your travels, and i replied as such, it would be because I am so envious that it pains me to hear it! I wouldn't be trying to be mean to you or begrudge you, but my life has turned out in such a way that any sort of travel is closed to me for the foreseeable future.

Further to comments by other posters, I'd resent hearing something like "I work hard and don't spend my hard earned money on takeaways or alcohol etc so I can go on holidays". As if everyone else is squandering their money. There are some who work just as hard and all the money is "squandered" on food and bills with absolutely nothing left for anything else. That's not so much directed at OP as I see your friends seemingly aren't in that position, but more for others who have mentioned it.

So just ignore it. It probably isn't about you, but how they feel

Are you retired?
How do you go away for a month at a time?

And yes I agree or I often find people spend their money on material things and then say they can’t afford a holiday and are jealous that other people can.

Self employed . So I can work lots when I'm in UK and take time off when I like

Azandme · 15/07/2025 11:38

I get told this regularly, and I just smile, because, compared to many people we do travel a lot.

I don't feel the need to defend or explain. We enjoy it, so we do it.

Next week we're going on our fourth overseas trip since December, and we're considering another to visit family in October.

Always travelling? Obviously not, have to work in between to fund it, travelling a lot? Yes.

I think the question isn't why do they say it, rather, why does it bother you?

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 15/07/2025 11:45

"Yes, it's great isn't it."
Would be my response.

NightPuffins · 15/07/2025 11:48

If someone said “you’re always travelling” to me I would answer “yes, I enjoy it”.

I am always travelling, I love it. To me, it’s like a hobby. Some people do a hobby at home once or twice a week, I go away somewhere averagely once a month. I enjoy thinking of where to go, researching it, planning and booking, as well as actually being there. It’s my life, my money. I don’t feel any need to justify how much I spend or how often I go.

Pinty · 15/07/2025 11:54

It's just a comment. You have been abroad a lot in the last few months and it's unusual so people think it's worth commenting on.i wouldn't take it as a criticism. Why does it bother you.?

iamnotalemon · 15/07/2025 12:33

I guess everyone has different priorities but your lifestyle and travel sounds great to me! Maybe there is a bit of envy, or perhaps they’re just not interested in travelling. Who knows. But you keep on living your life x

stayathomer · 15/07/2025 12:38

If flying I actually do sometimes think ‘could you not stay in the country?’ Only because I remember a scientist saying the ozone repaired part of instead over Covid while planes were grounded. I think about it a lot

If not flying every time yeah I’d just be thinking ‘fair dues, life is there to be lived!’

I was talking to someone today who had planned to take a four day UK city break, but couldn't find a decent B&B that didn't cost a LOT more than a budget flight to Spain and four days full board.

UK breaks can be so expensive in comparison. We spent as much on a weekend in York as five days in Serbia.

Or take a train or ferry.

I love long train trips, my parents visit friends in Poland and Austria via the train from the north of England.

Planes are only "necessary" if you don't have the time to travel by train or car to the end destination. It takes longer, but you can enjoy more of the journey, getting up, having a decent meal etc

@Azandme I do agree that the UK has very expensive holiday accommodation, but one of my favourite holidays was a solo road trip - little out of the way places up the country, one plush hotel on a weeknight and staying at a friend's another.

And also, holiday parks. Great to be used as a base whilst exploring an area.

HappilyDivorced89 · 15/07/2025 16:41

Your travel sounds fab OP! I just got my passport renewed (finally) after it expired 5 years ago and I can't wait to plan a wee solo trip somewhere for a few nights by myself while DD is with her dad.

JaceLancs · 15/07/2025 17:03

I get 6 weeks annual leave and some years that equates to 6 holidays
This year 4 will be out of U.K., I’ve also had a couple of long weekends in U.K. so far this year
Being on holiday is the only time I truly relax away from work and being carer for elderly DM, so it means so much
People comment to me often too, sometimes it’s envy other times it’s just a conversation point
