To be revered too as Missy

The other day someone I know referred to me as 'missy' as in she said hello missy.
I found it rude and condescending, iam.a 52 year old adult women. Not a stroppy teenager. I didn't say anything at the time. Said person isn't a close friend more of a friend of a friend/ acquaintance.
If she says it again am.i in the right to say " excuse me less of the missy please"
Said woman is late 60s church goer, sees herself as a pillar of the community!

She may just have been given you a friendly greeting. That's all. It's entirely possible you're reading way too much into this.

cloudbusting123 · 13/07/2025 22:14

Reading way too much into it, I would take it as a friendly familiar greeting. She sounds like she was just being nice.

Jaws2025 · 13/07/2025 22:15

Aren't you charming

CatamaranViper · 13/07/2025 22:17

Well missy is just a way to greet a woman, similar to Mry/mz-y. At least here it is. Supposed to be friendly

DeanStockwelll · 13/07/2025 22:17

The next yime she does it I'd make a point of introducing myself with the name I'd want her to use .
Make it sound like you think she doesn't know your name , if she accepts it fine , if not and says something like 'I know your name' then politely ask her to use it.

If she uses missy again, then you can be ruder .

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 13/07/2025 22:23

Do you mean Referred to? Or Addressed as?

whatcanthematterbe81 · 13/07/2025 22:27

Oh dear, I use cute words like this for people I like too. I must be totally evil

CleaningAngel · 13/07/2025 22:45

Why would you want to be rude? So odd!

Cosycover · 13/07/2025 23:06

Get a grip ffs

stonebrambleboy · 13/07/2025 23:53

I think 'missy' is on par with 'deary' I wouldn't like it either.

Redrosesposies · 13/07/2025 23:55

She just couldn't remember your name. That's all.
FGS unclench a bit.

She absolutely knows my name, she's the village busy body and makes it her business to know everything!!
What's wrong with just 'hello'
How would she like it if I said hello old spinster

GreenWheat · 14/07/2025 07:22

I would find that irritating as well. So patronising.

notacooldad · 14/07/2025 07:31

As a 60 year old woman, I wouldn't have given two hoots over this!!
Ive been called this and taken it for what it is,a friendly greeting.
Where I live and work, everyone is referred to as love, matey, sweetheart.

I could spend my day being uptight and getting in knots over this, or , just do what everyone else does, is smile back and get on with my day.

Wtf? Really?

Op you are making a mountain out of nothing. I suspect Its just because you don't like her you are wound up.
Seriously don't stress it.

FourLove · 14/07/2025 07:42

She may have nicely noting that you’re much younger than her. Hard to tell without hearing the tone of voice.

I don't particularly like her or dislike her, she's not even on my radar.
I've baked cakes for her church fate when asked, I just find her patronising.

To me, it's the same as dearie, honey, sweetie etc. I don't particularly love these kinds of greetings, but really, they are obviously friendly and you would really embarrass yourself if you make a big drama out of such a non event.

You sound like someone who is easily offended. I’d be afraid to open my mouth if I was in your company.

Cattery · 14/07/2025 15:31

It’s like Dick Emery “excuse me madam” “Miss”

MissyB1 · 14/07/2025 15:34

Im originally from the North Midlands, I might have called you duck, "Hiya duck". I apologise in advance if I ever meet you and call you duck 😂

Pinty · 14/07/2025 15:41

It wouldn't bother me in the least and I am older than you. It's not abusive and not at all comparable to saying "hello old spinster' to her .
There is a lot on life to get upset over. For me this isn't one of those things.

outerspacepotato · 14/07/2025 15:44

"My name's not Missy, it's CleaningAngel."

Missy is a nickname here.
