Work trip - no food in hotel!

I'm way for work for the week. I'm staying in a hotel in the middle of nowhere. It took me 4 hours to get here in v hot trains.
Room and hotel lovely but I went down to the bar/ restaurant and asked about dinner- to be told as they have an event on the kitchen is closed.
They offered me a free drink but apologised and said unfortunately there are no takeaways that deliver.
I'm on a meal allowance. I'm pissed off!
And I'm having to pay £200 for taxis for the. Grr
I'm hot hungry and annoyed. Aibu?

If all the staff are gone, I'd be tempted to try and raid the kitchen.

Do they put biscuits in the rooms? Can you find out where they keep the stash of them?

Boxingshibes · 13/07/2025 22:26

Unfortunately no biscuits only tea and coffee.

Are the people attending the event being picked up by taxi? If so, could you ask the local taxi company who are coming to collect them (presumably from the local town, which given the part of the world you're in I'm assuming starts with W) to bring you a meal deal? Slightly odd request, I know, but they might take pity on you 😅.

Sidebeforeself · 13/07/2025 22:34

Are you not starving?! I’d be so hangry!

CalicoPusscat · 13/07/2025 22:36

We all want you fed OP! I'll have to check back through your messages to see why a delivery isn't feasible

TheMagnificentBean · 13/07/2025 22:36

What sort of event is it? Can you crash the food part, grab a few things and go back to your room?

For the future, can you get a personal credit card? I put work expenses on mine and pay it off in full each month - work usually manages to reimburse expenses before the bill is due.

TiredAllNight · 13/07/2025 22:37

Surely there must be a staff member in the hotel ? I’d not be happy with that.
They should have bought you snacks from the vbar, extra milk for drinks, and bottled water, and they must have been able to make a sandwich. Or give you cheese and crackers or toast. they will have food ready for breakfasts stored somewhere, even if it’s fruits and pastries.
Pretty disgraceful really

I went back down to reception but was still a no. All staff have now gone. I'll let work know tomorrow maybe they can increase my allowance for the next few days to make up for it.
Hope breakfast is OK. I usually don't eat breakfast but might make an exception.

No staff whatsoever in a nice otherwise hotel. There will be a night porter or someone . No hotel wortg their salt is totally unmanned. Find out who is on night duty and kick up a an absolute hangry stink until something is sorted. Realise it’s a Sunday but he’ll be able to get something from a 24/7 garage or something. Tell the you will leave the shittest of shittest trip advisor reviews if you go to bed without food.

Boxingshibes · 13/07/2025 22:43

@TheMagnificentBean I have a card which had 250 on it i was expecting taxis to be 150 leaving me with 100. I'm supposed to be meeting a friend( pervious colleague) for dinner on Tuesday as she lives close by so now I need to make sure my amount is about £40.
The taxi company are great they'll sent me a whole weeks cost so I could pay it.
I'm thinking of speaking to the travel person at work and getting them to pay it upfront next time, which is September.

CalicoPusscat · 13/07/2025 22:45

Well, I hope it's a magnificent breakfast - but leave a complaint.

CrushingOnRubies · 13/07/2025 22:47

If they have provisions for breakfast for tomorrow morning. Surely someone can rustle up an dippy egg and soldiers or something for tonight

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 13/07/2025 22:48

@Boxingshibes how far is the nearest town?? what star rating does this hotel have? most certainly will be lower once you have put in your review through trip advisor or even the association who gives out the stars!! did your employer book the hotel or did you?

FusionChefGeoff · 13/07/2025 22:51

Bowl of cornflakes at the very least!!

Wowwee1234 · 13/07/2025 22:52

You can spend £200 on taxis but not £50 for a takeout or supermarkey delivery? Come on OP.

Have you read her posts?

Keroppi · 13/07/2025 22:57

Wow perhaps you'd be better hiring a car next time (if you can drive)
I can't believe they won't even offer you something from the event or a sandwich.. even a bag or crisps! There's no small local corner shops nearby?

Definitely a name and shame moment - or at least a threat to! Make sure you are writing everything down of who you spoke to and who said what for your complaint. Being hangry is the worst
At least you'll be ready for breakfast first thing Grin

WTF?

The £200 she wasn't expecting has pretty much cleared her out. Your logic on thinking that anyone who can pay £200 will still have lots of the bank, is ridiculous.

Boxingshibes · 13/07/2025 23:01

@Wowwee1234 I budgeted for 250 i could spend. I thought 150 taxi ( as it was in November) then 100 for stuff. Now it's 200 leaves me with 50.
All bills/rent/food paid but we actually have about 100 as a family until next week when I get paid. So milk bread etc i can't ask to spend the money for food.
I'd rather go hungry

That’s ridiculous. As others have said, there will surely be some sort of food in the kitchen that someone with an an ounce of nous could prepare for you.

SummerSunAndFun · 13/07/2025 23:08

Ask work to pay the taxi company directly. £200 is a lot of money to be expected to stump up a week before pay day. Hope you get some food tonight too.

HelenaWaiting · 13/07/2025 23:11

I have type 1 diabetes so I have no idea what I'd do in this situation. But if your manager has a company credit card she can book and pay for your £200 taxi, leaving you with money to get a meal.

Sorry to hear that.

Your work are unreasonable to expect you to manage that level of expenses.

The hotel are unreasonable to provide no food at all.
