To just shut the door on religious door-knockers, with no comment?

I used to smile and say "I'm not religious", but a friend pointed out that this still confers some degree of social legitimacy on their absurd intrusion into my life.

I decided that a better tactic, when it becomes clear that a doorknocker is peddling religion, is to just silently close the door in their face.

Wondering how many people here agree that this is a reasonable response to unreasonable intrusion, and how you choose to respond to these people.

I usually tell the young girl that is inevitably wity the old bloke that I’m a safe place when she wants to run, and then shut the door

cinquanta · 13/07/2025 16:31

If you are on MN why are you answering your door/phone/mail anyway?

Generally speaking I’m not in favour of people treating each other in cold transactional ways, it’s a slippery slope. It’s good for your soul to be benevolent.

Absolutely with you on that

mimicracra · 13/07/2025 16:32

I’ve been blacklisted since I told them I hate religion, they haven’t been back! (In reality I’m simply indifferent to it).

MyDadWasAnArse · 13/07/2025 16:34

I just say I'm not interested and shut the door.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 13/07/2025 16:35

to peddle your delusions

oh you’re one of those 🙄

Tell me how often is this happening to you or is this just a convenient excuse to pontificate about your thoughts on religion

MissFancyDay · 13/07/2025 16:36

It's not really necessary to be rude on occasions like this. Obviously if they persist it might be necessary to be firm.

ScrambledEggs12 · 13/07/2025 16:36

Very much depends on my mood. I once told them to fuck off and slammed the door in their face (I had been up all night and had only just fallen asleep for a nap). Sometimes I have nice conversations with them.

Most recently I didn't answer as our doorbell wasn't working.

BelindaCardAisle · 13/07/2025 16:36

I say no thank you, because I'm polite and friendly. I don't see the need to act like any of the above.
I live near a church, so every now and then some will knock - but they accept my disinterest and move on. It's really not a hardship.

youreactinglikeafunmum · 13/07/2025 16:36

Nah its rude 😭

Just say, not interested sorry, at least

Or get a ring doorbell and ignore them x

DiscoBob · 13/07/2025 16:36

I wouldn't open it to them as I'd usually check out the window. If I did as I was next to the door or for whatever reason I'd just say no thank you.

I did have some who kept coming back. Last time I think I sounded a bit desperate and mad when they came.

I declined, but then one of them just responded with 'what is your name?' I kind of slightly raised my voice and said in a panicked way 'no, no, please, erm, I'm really really anti..THAT' then shut the door. 🤣

Not my finest hour. But they haven't been round since.

OLDERME · 13/07/2025 16:37

I shake my head and close the door. Based on past experience, when I tried to be polite, they went on and on and on...

NeverTrustTheScales · 13/07/2025 16:38

My neighbour says FUCK OFF and closes the door, his wife is a tiny bit horrified.

minnienono · 13/07/2025 16:38

No thanks and close the door is polite but not engaging. Only exception is collecting for Christian aid, they support so many projects that bring people out of extreme poverty, I’ll donate to them

CoastalCalm · 13/07/2025 16:39

I tend to have a little chat with them , I used to work with a JW and found it fascinating despite not being religious at all. I’m slightly envious of people that believe so strongly in ‘something’

tinydynamine · 13/07/2025 16:39

"We're all Church of Scotland here, so you'd be wasting your time. Bye!"

You don't need to be religious to be kind.

You should try it sometime.

But maybe you think that it's easy to be unkind to strangers because there's nothing in it for you.

Here's a passive aggressive eye roll for you 🙄

MadKittenWoman · 13/07/2025 16:40

I just say “No thank you.” They just say “OK, goodbye,” and I shut the door. I keep it civil.

Danikm151 · 13/07/2025 16:40

I found a new tactic the other week
”sorry I’m working from home and have a meeting scheduled right now”

RosesAndHellebores · 13/07/2025 16:40

One of the few pluses of living in a house behind gates, on a gated road, is that they can't get to the door to knock.

At our old house, they knocked, wittered on, I had to ask explicitly if they were JW's. They said yes, I said "we are practicing Anglo Catholics, cheerio". I recall they call about three times in 20+ years. Not really an issue.

No thanks works for me but than I don't dwell on it.

Jasmin71 · 13/07/2025 16:41

I just say " God is an abbreviation for Goddess" and they go away.

I think it’s rude to not say anything. I just say ‘thank you. I’m not interested. Have a good day’ close door.

It’s rude to knock on someone’s door and intrude on the private time to push their beliefs

We’re blacklisted after DH gave some JWs a maths/science lesson and a copy of the New Scientist in return for The Watchtower. 😂

I love this.

Luckily no one would let them into the building here.

Nooooo. They'll come back.

We have a doggy in the window as of late (Alsatian) and the religious weirdos and lib dem pricks alike have stopped knocking.
