Are there ever circumstances where it’s justified to throw litter from a car?

Every time I go out for a walk near us, I end up coming back pissed off. The verges along the roads are covered in litter – bottles, cans, fast food packaging, and I’ve seen dirty nappies. It’s even worse on the big roads. It’s disgusting and completely unnecessary.

I just don’t understand the mentality. Who thinks, “Oh, I’ve finished my drink, better lob the bottle out the window”? Or “I don’t want this bottle of piss / dog poo bag / dirty nappy in my car for a second longer so I’ll drop it for someone else to pick up.”

So, AIBU to think people who litter like this are just total cf? I just don’t know how they can have so little respect for their environment or other people who have to deal with their mess.

Nope. There are no circumstances where it's ok

WonderingWanda · 13/07/2025 15:26

No. I don't get it either but it's not just in cars. So many people think nothing of leaving their litter.

Brahumbug · 13/07/2025 15:26

That's simpler, no! There are no excuses for throwing litter anywhere, I never do it not do my family. Take it home or at least until you find a proper disposal point.

Gardeninrags · 13/07/2025 15:27

I can’t understand the mentality of anyone who litters. Who do they think will clear it up or don’t they care if the whole country is knee deep in rubbish?
The only exception might be an apple core or banana peel if it is a rural location and can be thrown into undergrowth.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 13/07/2025 15:27

I honestly can’t think of one. It’s a very odd thing to do, if you actually think about it.

BMW6 · 13/07/2025 15:28

Some people have no pride

araiwa · 13/07/2025 15:28

If it's on fire

shellyleppard · 13/07/2025 15:29

Only thing I used to throw out the window was apple cores

BeCosyLion · 13/07/2025 15:29

No it drives me crazy. It was drilled into me as a child that we put rubbish in our pockets until we find a bin. Some people are just so selfish

Glitchymn1 · 13/07/2025 15:30

No. I have followed someone and handed them
their litter.

Gingercar · 13/07/2025 15:31

No.

But I think some small brained people actually get off on throwing it. We live in beautiful open country and there is a carpark near by. There’s a bin in the corner, yet there’s alway litter thrown around (MacDonalds bags and drink cans).

HairOfFineStraw · 13/07/2025 15:32

If there's a spider on it and you are trying to throw him out the window?

No, obviously.

TweedleDumbAndTweedleDeeeeeeeee · 13/07/2025 15:34

No excuse for throwing litter out of any vehicle or anywhere else apart from into a bin. Food packaging chucked out of windows attract hungry, curious wildlife that get kill on the roads. Fags can cause fires. And as for poo bags, soiled nappies and bottles of piss - why the fuck do people do that? Revolting! There are some ignorant, selfish bad mannered people around.

ilovemyhamster · 13/07/2025 15:37

No it's never ok. I've been for a run this morning and there are two bagels of dog poo hung on a fence. Same mentality. Entitled lazy twats. 😡

ilovemyhamster · 13/07/2025 15:38

Bags obviously. Where are my glasses 🤓

EverardDeTroyes · 13/07/2025 15:38

If I was on a long journey with no chance of stopping at a bin and I had a bag of puke with me, I have to be honest and say I might dump that but that is because I am phobic of puke.

Other than that, no. I can't understand people who litter. If I accidentally dropped the tiniest piece I would pick it up immediately. I was brought up that way. Even throwing biodegradable things like apple cores. We were allowed to do that as children, but now I imagined it is frowned upon as interfering with habitats.

IglesiasPiggl · 13/07/2025 15:41

Some people just get as far as "I don't need this and don't want it in my car" and seem incapable of thinking or caring about what happens to it. It really is gobsmacking

Backtothebestbits · 13/07/2025 15:44

I agree OP - I haven’t driven for several years so walk everywhere and can guarantee that every day I am picking up rubbish that some other selfish idiot has just thrown out of their car. McDonald’s, KFC, you name it, just hurled out. I also have to walk through parks and wooded areas and it’s the same there - so depressing!

I’m just watching a programme on Switzerland and they have it absolutely right, they have Environmental Wardens in the town centres and they literally spend all day issuing fines to those that litter, spit or throw fag butts in the street. Of course we have councils here that can’t even pay for the major services, let alone have wardens out patrolling, but we do need it!

AbzMoz · 13/07/2025 15:50

I volunteer at a local park and it’s heart breaking how people just dump stuff. The council doesn’t have the money to pay for this - and nor should they! Just carry your can / crisp bag / dog poo the 2-3 mins to a bin - there are plenty around!

I understand littering from the car even less to be honest as it’s not in your hands. Just take it home / to a services.

Nowstrong · 13/07/2025 16:02

No.

maudelovesharold · 13/07/2025 16:02

I can’t understand the mentality of anyone who litters. Who do they think will clear it up or don’t they care if the whole country is knee deep in rubbish?

They don’t care if the whole country, (apart from any square footage which they or their family occupy), is knee deep in rubbish. Their mentality is all about them being ok and showing two fingers to everyone else.

Happymover · 13/07/2025 16:02

When I arrived in the car park of our local sports centre yesterday the car in the next parking space was just pulling out. They left behind 4 empty drinks cans on the ground.

Each one perfectly placed like they’d sat with the 4 car doors open in the sunshine, finished their drinks, sat the cans on the ground, closed the 4 car doors and drove off. The lazy fuckers were parked about 10 paces from a waste bin 😡

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 13/07/2025 16:07

Absolutely - if the piece of rubbish is on fire, it's a rainy day and there are no cars behind you.

I sincerely doubt if that's the case for the appalling amounts of litter I see on roadsides. It's shameful.

pppaper · 13/07/2025 16:09

I am a litter picker and it is amazing how many people throw litter near the bin not in the bin even if it is not full.

The nappies always disgust me.

The litter on hot days increases 100%. So many beer cans in the park and on the roads.

StrangledVowels · 13/07/2025 16:09

Absolutely none, whatsoever. If you throw litter out of a car, you’re an absolute waste of oxygen, contributing pretty much nothing to the human race.
