Are there ever circumstances where it’s justified to throw litter from a car?

Every time I go out for a walk near us, I end up coming back pissed off. The verges along the roads are covered in litter – bottles, cans, fast food packaging, and I’ve seen dirty nappies. It’s even worse on the big roads. It’s disgusting and completely unnecessary.

I just don’t understand the mentality. Who thinks, “Oh, I’ve finished my drink, better lob the bottle out the window”? Or “I don’t want this bottle of piss / dog poo bag / dirty nappy in my car for a second longer so I’ll drop it for someone else to pick up.”

So, AIBU to think people who litter like this are just total cf? I just don’t know how they can have so little respect for their environment or other people who have to deal with their mess.

If it was on fire?

No

Ok well, I'm not going to try to convince you that what I have is a.phobia and nothing at all the same as the average person's natural aversion to vomit. It isn't what this thread is about. Just be glad you don't know what I'm experiencing.

I still don't think anyone else should have to clear up your mess.

BeMintSwan · 14/07/2025 18:59

Only the ignorant think it’s acceptable to throw litter.

Radiatorvalves · 14/07/2025 19:05

I had words with a couple of 10 year olds who told me to fuck off.

Ive had words with a bin man who was going to leave smashed glass all over the road (he’d dropped the bag) outside my house.

My dad in his 70s jumped out of his car at the lights and through a recently chucked fag packet back into the car!

I HATE LITTER AND I HATE THOSE THAT LITTER MORE

Elephantiner · 14/07/2025 19:15

We were holidaying in a lovely part of the lakes. Last day went for a walk before setting off home. I changed the baby’s nappy and the car was rammed so I put it on the roof while I worked out what to do with it. I drove off and totally forgot about it.

Littering is NEVER acceptable, no matter where. I still shudder about that nappy.

Tessabelle74 · 14/07/2025 19:33

No

CoraPirbright · 14/07/2025 19:34

Nope. Not ever, ever, ever acceptable. The people who do this are utter scum.

The idea that people’s car registrations should be printed on their drive-through take always is an excellent one, I think. Then they can be tracked down and hung, drawn and quartered fined heavily.

DollydaydreamTheThird · 14/07/2025 19:48

Dirty bitch in front of me threw a cig packet out of her car at the lights coming off a motorway. I full on beeped and asked her wtf she was doing? She looked away suitably embarrassed. Not sure she'll do it again.
There is never any excuse for it. We just live in a country full of morally deprived reprobates.

Glitchymn1 · 13/07/2025 15:30

No. I have followed someone and handed them
their litter.

Good for you!

That sounds like a good idea; the registration printing that is, not the horrific medieval form of execution! 😂

A countryside place where I used to volunteer used to get people parking up in the car park at night and dumping their McDonald's wrappings. One time there was receipt with a time stamp so the guy in charge rang McDonald's and asked for the car reg number off the cctv. The wouldn't give it because of data protection.

Kaftanesque · 14/07/2025 20:24

I feel so angry and frustrated about the state of our country re littering.Wherever anyone is driving to be it home, shopping , work etc there will be a bin so the mentality of people who lob stuff out of the window defeats me.I really wish there was some way of clamping down on this and fly tipping and turning around this increasingly scummy attitude.

Bridport · 14/07/2025 20:27

I've written to McDonalds about the litter they cause. They said they can't be responsible for their customers. They really couldn't give a toss.

If there's a spider on it and you are trying to throw him out the window?

No, obviously.

I came here to say this 😂
But seriously no, Some people are just fucking filthy slobs.

Fogey · 14/07/2025 20:44

I spend a lot of time in France … very rarely see litter anywhere. Whatever do visitors to UK think of us?
if you drop litter in the countryside then I can only assume you allow litter in your own home … maybe hang a dirty nappy or bag full of dog shit off your lounge chandelier … it’s certainly a look.

MrsFeljne · 14/07/2025 20:46

I threw a dead wasp out of my car yesterday, presumably that’s ok.

Mumofteenandtween · 14/07/2025 21:19

I think it is fine if you have been kidnapped and need to leave clues for the rest of the Famous Five.

Personally though that only happens to me every month or so.

Yes, if the French can keep they country tidy, why can't we?

Its grim really & judging by the amounts on verges, dog shit and problems with fly tipping, its clearly a majority who treat the country like a rubbish tip.

Gettingbysomehow · 14/07/2025 21:40

I used to live on the South Downs and every road through the park was strewn with car litter, it was disgusting, people are disgusting. I'd like to rub their faces in their litter.

Lostinmiddleage · 14/07/2025 21:51

No. It makes my blood boil. Selfish, ignorant pricks.

Alexandra2001 · 14/07/2025 21:58

One issue is a totally lack of enforcement, start dishing out £1k fines and 6 month driving bans, regardless of who threw the litter and people "might" stop.

They probably throw their rubbish out of their house windows I used to live near a woman who threw dirty nappies out of the window of her 1st floor flat lobbing them in the general direction of the communal bins.

Edit: this was 40 years ago so not a recent thing.

MotherofPearl · 14/07/2025 22:13

It seems unanimous that littering is a revolting thing to do.

And yet it’s so widespread that there are obviously plenty of people who do it. Though none are brave enough to come on here to try to justify themselves.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 14/07/2025 22:35

Never.

Whilst walking to the park with my ds (aged about 5) ds told off a motorist who had pulled in to a residential road near us and was busy throwing their McDonald’s wrappers and the contents of their ashtray on to the pavement.

They were so taken aback they picked it all up put it in a carrier bag and drove off with it.
