I’m just getting into Old Hollywood films. I’ve only watched a handful so far, but right now my favourite is Bringing Up Baby (staring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant)

What’s your favourites?

Rear Window, absolute classic and completely gripped me when I first saw it

This thread has inspired me, and am giving Singin in the Rain another go now, it’s fabulous!!!

I am going to make a list of films that have been mentioned (more than once) on this thread and watch them all. Thanks so much I’m having a lovely evening 💕

Darkling1 · 13/07/2025 21:25

There are several films I’ve wanted to watch, but they aren’t on any streaming services. Particularly Rear Window, Laura and The Philadelphia Story.

I think we’ll be watching Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner tomorrow as it’s on Prime (I’m rather partial to Katharine Hepburn, so that’s a bonus ☺️)

Dragonwyk, it’s perfection especially on a windy rainy winters afternoon 🖤

Darkling1 · 16/07/2025 08:42

Hope no one minds me updating the thread again, but we watched Ninotchka last night and it was brilliant. I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned on the thread!

Harvey - it is my absolute favourite film.

Omg mine too. I love that naivety and seeing only the good in others. It’s beautiful

Abracadabra12345 · 16/07/2025 19:21

I saw “ Trouble in Town”, a black-and-white Cary Grant film (who was hamming it up for all he was worth) in the cinema recently and absolutely loved it

Magnificent Obsession with Rock Hudson

Every Bette Davis movie!!

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 16/07/2025 19:34

I often wonder if Sky bought virtually all the rights to show old films like those mentioned but also films from the 70's, 80's onwards as it's so hard to see these films any more apart from a few of the same ones repeated on loops?

WitcheryDivine · 16/07/2025 19:52

My fave ever is His Girl Friday, apparently still the fastest talking comedy ever made and with AMAZING Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant.

Dial M for Murder and Rear Window - saw both for the first time as a teen and was RAPT.

Guys and Dolls is so good. Also Oklahoma? Great songs.

FYI loads of these musicals have what my dad used to call “the bonkers ballet” section, I still remember his finger jammed on the fast forward button on our old video player waiting for it to be over. No idea why they did them but I can tell you they look much funnier speeded up (I just skip them now).
