To take a siesta?

...between 3pm-5:30pm? I have just come back from walking the dog and I wasn't the only one! I feel we may start to adopt a different way of of living if this continues.

I would be headachy and unable to sleep as well that evening. Im also at work at those times but you do you

darkenednights · 12/07/2025 00:05

I sometimes take a 10-15 minute power nap around 3pm. Nothing wrong with that and it can energise you for the rest of the day. If you're going to be sleeping 2.5 hours though, I think that would be concerning if it's a regular thing. If you need that then maybe you need a medical check up? It might also negatively affect your sleep at night.

robinibor · 12/07/2025 00:08

No I mean everything should close between these hours and then open up/ stay up later in the evening. It is hotter than the south of France.

For people in many parts of the world, it's not that hot. Homes need redesigning to cope with it. We have evap cooling.

How would that work with childcare?

robinibor · 12/07/2025 00:15

Productivity will reduce if we don't adapt - taking a nap would be easier than changing our environment.

Soeak for yourself. My productivity isn't declining.

I've never met a child yet who's going to go straight home to sleep when they want to spend time with their parents.

Also, there are many jobs that couldn't break for siesta.

wwyd2021medicine · 12/07/2025 00:23

I'm a big fan of the nap. I can easily sleep for an hour in the afternoon but not in this heat. I still have a quiet hour lying on my bad though.

Definitely nap if you can.

PoopingAllTheWay · 12/07/2025 00:24

😂

If children were to sleep 3pm-5.30pm they would be up most of the night

Shenmen · 12/07/2025 00:28

I think for manual labour this is something to think about. Or those that struggle to work in the heat. Personally it doesn't bother me at all.
Many countries have manual workers starting at 6am or at sunrise with a break during the hot hours of the day. No reason office workers who can don't do the same. Hard obviously if you have kids
Personally the heat doesn't bother me that much.

Which is why kids are awake late in hot countries

How would that work with childcare?

It’s a nightmare - extends the working day by hours and creates child care issues to a point where without a yeye /nona -usually the MGM - it’s not really feasible for a woman to hold down a full time job- which is needed to sustain a reasonable standard of living , certainly in Spain.
That was certainly the case when I lived in Spain, 2000-2007. However, going by my friends and relatives still there- mainly the the generation above me where things are changing rapidly , the supply of grandparents able or willing to provide the level of childcare to essentially support split shifts is starting to wain .
They are still working and things have changed a lot for women in even just 20 years. Those in their mid/late 50s who are still working when they become nans are not as chuffed to give up work and become the domestic help as their foremothers were- and those that are part time /retiring early /have never worked/ don’t have kids are enjoying travel /friendships/gym/coffee culture with friends in a way I never would have imagined living there 25 years ago .

good for them!

This is my first post on Mumsnet recently (I deleted my old account) and I think you are spot on to take a siesta!

An afternoon nap is one is one of life’s free feel better tricks. Take one for sure!

SnowFrogJelly · 12/07/2025 00:37

That’s a long siesta! I wouldn’t sleep at night after that

abracadabra1980 · 12/07/2025 00:43

I have an afternoon 'rest' on my bed whenever I need to clear my brain. It is wonderful. I don't sleep, but I do feel better for it. The heat has wiped me out this week and I've had to just stop as I've actually felt lightheaded.

mondaytosunday · 12/07/2025 00:52

Places that have a siesta - I don’t think they sleep. Some do I suppose but I think it’s more families reconnect. But it’s not in cities - maybe some independent shops still do it. I know in the area of Spain I visit they close between 2-6, but then stay open til 9pm or later. Not sure how well that would go down here!

Are you taking the piss there is enough people in this country on siestas. If we move any slower we'll stop.

PrincessASDaisy · 12/07/2025 01:05

Gosh you’ve really ruffled a few feathers with this suggestion! Looks like a few people could do with an afternoon siesta, so cranky!

I know shops to open on Christmas day. He makes a killing every year because all the other shops are closed. It would be very difficult to implement in this country. We are still a very wet country.

Brexit now siestas. People won't be satisfied until this country is run in to the ground. It's a silly suggestion. In America the richest country in the world has air-conditioning in most if not all its properties. I will work until 12am whatever keeps the notes coming in.

savagedaughter · 12/07/2025 05:24

"Adapt" to a warm summer day by completely altering how UK society functions. Er, yep yabvu.

Having a bit of a snooze on a warm summer day and then continuing life as normal when the warm weather passes again as you do every year - not unreasonable.

Also, I remember around 30 years ago first wishing for air con in the summer as I had gotten badly sunburned at the beach (Ayr beach in Scotland) and would have loved cooler temps in the house when I went to bed. It's a shame nobody in the UK seems to think air con should be normalised when they live in such small homes built only for the freezing UK temps without consideration of the hot months.

robinibor · 12/07/2025 18:01

Haha, I take it IABVU! Just an idea. It is nice to retreat and relax between these hours when it's hot, not necessarily to sleep but a reboot and stay up later.

I have taken to running a cool bath and lying in it for an hour or so around that time. It's lovely. Then a cool shower evenings and going to bed with wet hair to stay a little bit cooler.
