We know the climate is changing and it is us. This particular heat wave feels like the next step up after a winter of devastating storms.

YABU - It's just too hot
YANBU - This is the taste of things to come.

That's interesting. Not 1911 then. According to a page on Wikipedia in 1911 the temperature got up to 36.7°C in Raunds, Northamptonshire. Just goes to show we need to have a definitive source of our information.

On this page is a chart of the 10 hottest days in the UK. 1990 is in there along with 1911. All the other days are in this century. 1976 doesn't even get a mention.
United Kingdom weather records - Wikipedia

Those are years with consecutive days over 30 degrees. I just put "more than one" to keep it simple. I've seen 1911 on lists of the 10 hottest days. I think there were temperatures above 30 a couple of times in the 50s as well but would have to check. It is quite difficult to find out for sure.

Lisanne55 · 13/07/2025 19:15

The 10th hottest day is 36.5 degrees in 2006. There are plenty of other days over 30.

Lisanne55 · 13/07/2025 19:17

It is definitely the case though that there are more and hotter days in the 21st century and we are only one quarter of the way through it.😬

SerendipityJane · 13/07/2025 15:21

Not really sure that can be used as a way forward though.

We could start by charging fuel duty on kerosene. That would reduce the number of flights by a fair bit.

Gbafa · 13/07/2025 15:30

I don't think we should stop flying. We should just decarbonise aviation.

I always find the word "just" to be such a tell. It's "just" so simple, right?

SquallyShowersLater · 13/07/2025 20:11

I take it you weren't around in the summer of 76 then.

bookworm14 · 13/07/2025 20:27

Bloody hell, it’s like talking to the wall.

I want to see more of the world. I need to fly. Especially to see my family abroad.

Isn't having kids the very worst thing for the environment? Yet tell people you're not having kids for that reason and people think you're crazy!

The very fact people are worrying about their grandchildren's children points to them thinking they actually have the luxury to have as many kids as they want. Well maybe they do, but I'm not sure if the planet has that luxury...we just need fewer people that's the bottom line.

I think you’ll find that depopulation is a major issue, especially in the west.

It’s not going to be easy but it needs to go down naturally.

Those people seem to cope in other parts of the world. Why does the UK think it is so "special" and everything affects them more than anyone else? If your summers are getting warmer then it's about time you thought about what can be done to deal with that, but no, Brits just like to whinge (nothing new there) while sitting back doing nothing.

No they don't.

They die.

The heatwave in between 23/6/25 and 2/7/25 is estimated to have caused approximately 2,300 excess deaths across 12 European cities.

Floods, famine, disease and heatwaves are all natural though ?

They are. But if we keep saying population has to go up we’ll get that and more volatility on top.

People seem more worried about depopulation, I think it’s the chance to get through next however many decades.

If your economy is predicated on the mass of people paying to make a few rich, and you make the mass of people poorer, then you need more people in the mass to maintain the flow up to the rich.

That is what is driving population growth.

It was but it seems even the voters are saying enough to that.

We’ll feel it economically but better than just more and more people and increased volatility and fighting over resources.

We won’t need the same with tech replacing people anyway, whether anyone can work out how to get the taxes from it is another issue.

How are you going to decarbonise aviation then?

I want to see more of the world too. But I want to see it responsibly. Therefore flying becomes a last resort, something done rarely. For many journeys there are good alternatives available.

The only time a 40c temperature has been recorded in the UK was July 2022.

The widespread nature of the heat meant that the average maximum temperature across the whole of the UK exceeded 30°C for the first time and the UK had its two hottest days on record by this measurement in a series that goes back to 1960. The new highest average maximum temperature set on 19 July 2022 was 2°C higher than the previous value of 29.5°C set on 25 July 2019.

Not in terms of global warming. The planet will never suffer from having too few humans.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Electrification.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Electrification.

Those are going to be for very limited applications so you won't see the current levels of mass travel by air.

Finteq · 11/07/2025 21:27

It was 27c in the northwest today. And will be 28 tomorrow.

That is normal summer temps

No @Finteq it's not normal. This info is from Ed Hawkins, a professor of climate science and meteorology at the university of Reading.

Also, for all of those using 1976 to say we regularly get hot summers, google Hawkins' "show your stripes" website which shows how much average temperatures have increased year on year. 1976 was an outlier.
