Any tips to make a holiday go a smoothly as possible? On my packing list along side the usual stuff is a steamer for clothing and folding travel pegs 😂 any other suggestions? Any tips to make the whole travelling with children go as smoothly as possible? I hate flying so any suggestions for light hearted books that will keep me busy would also be great! Thanks :)

We save money on adapters by only holidaying in places that use the same plugs as the UK.

Ha ha ha, this has to be a joke. Like one of the Viz top tips!
If not, Poundland sell travel adaptors 😄

This sounds like a Viz Top Tip 😂😂

Sorry @JMSA I’ve said exactly the same thing as you 😂 I couldn’t read on after that post and had to say it as soon as I thought it 😂

Whenever I've gone on holiday I take a little torch with me and put it next to the bed, that way I know I can find some form of lighting in an unfamiliar place.

Or use the torcch built into your mobile phone.

Rainbowqueeen · 11/07/2025 21:46

With the flight make sure you book seats together. Take a few snacks.

If you give sone idea of where you are going, what type of accommodation you have and the ages of the DC we can give much more useful tips.

Packing cubes are game changers! I pack them with the outfits for me and the kids that we need each day. So on day 1 I open cube 1 and there are all of our outfits that we need that day. At the end of the day they can go back in that cube dirty. Separate cubes for swimming stuff and sun protection, nightwear and toothbrushes.

The trick is to spend hours packing so there is absolutely no effort or thought required on holiday. We do only go for a week though- any longer and at least one wash would be required.

also fuck steaming stuff! Just don’t wear clothes that require it.

brunettemic · 11/07/2025 22:20

Don’t forget your clothes, that steamer will be useless otherwise.

See, I thought about buying those. But then decided they’d actually take up more space than just rolling or folding my clothes.
Sorry, but I remain unconvinced on them 😁

Don't book destinations where you would be concerned about tiny creases and not looking immaculate.

Holiday happy children are Grubby looking bisto kids whose parents take time to play with them, hunt for seashells, fish for crabs, examine cracks in the pavement, let them order food they might not like and swap a safe choice if necessary.

Read to your children on the plane and get some magnetic drafts. Count all the people in a pink top or wearing trainers. We must have listened to all of Ravens Gate, much of Jackie Wilson and Roald Dahl on various long journeys.

The DC still recall one long drive when DH retold, in his own words, the Winnie the Poo stories with emphasis on Poo, and each creature's various efforts. It was very silly but very funny.

Unecessary 🤣 you have your phone for that OR the bedsight light /lamp.

Cosyblankets · 12/07/2025 09:16

What on earth is a folding peg? I've never heard of them.
Another vote for packing cubes.

Three quid buys you a UK-EU adapter and opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. A coffee at the airport costs more than that. 😎

Buy new underwear, leave it at home and pack old underwear. Wear it and bin it leaving space for souvenirs.

God this is so wasteful. Waste of money and awful for the environment, just more in landfill.

Havanananana · 12/07/2025 15:03

I live next door to a holiday rental property and occasionally help the owner out by letting people in when he can't do a changeover day himself.

Many people drive here and some bring so much stuff that they can barely get themselves and the kids into the car. As well as the usual bags and cases, some people bring enough food to feed an army for a week (even though there's a large supermarket 200m away), and others bring pots and pans, or half of the kids' bedrooms (toys, games, books etc). I laughed the first time I saw someone lugging a large flat-screen TV into the house, but I've seen this twice since. Folding clothes drying racks also seem to be a regular item.

No book seats as far from teen dc as possible 😂

AvidJadeShaker · 12/07/2025 15:11

Do not over pack, it’s easy to wash things in the sink.

It is so easy to take too many shoes you never wear.

I often buy things like rubber rings cheaply on eBay and take those.

Once I’ve used 2/3 of my face cream etc I put them by and take them on my holiday to save some weight.

FanofLeaves · 12/07/2025 15:27

You can wash things in the sink but it always smells of wet dog 🤣

SunsetCocktails · 12/07/2025 15:37

@AvidJadeShakerI do that too with face cleanser, shower gel, shampoo etc. Just take enough for the week and chuck it when I’m done. Leaves room for the tourist tat I’m bringing home then!

AndSoFinally · 12/07/2025 16:05

1 roll of duct tape

Has so many uses! Stick up towels for shade, close curtains that let in the light, suitcases that get broken en route, etc

Has saved us lots of hassle over the years

Swiftie1878 · 11/07/2025 16:47

Instead of taking loads of adaptors, just take one and an extension cable with multiple plugs (and ideally USB slots too).

This, and a can of crease relaxant for clothes.

don’t knock it till you’ve tried it 😀

actually you can roll the clothes within the packing cubes so they are tightly packed and the cube sort of squeezes it all together which helps with room. They are also very thin material

soupmaker · 12/07/2025 20:20

I’m all in with packing cubes. I was a sceptic but OMFG they are brilliant. One for underwear, one for swimwear, one for bottoms, one for tops and dresses. Makes storing and finding things so easy.

TheChosenTwo · 12/07/2025 22:12

Another one who doesn’t see any point in packing cubes for my needs - I’m always going to one place on holiday so just unpack everything when I get there. I don’t need multiple bags stuffed full of tops and then bottoms and then dresses and then underwear etc etc, seems like such a massive faff to compartmentalise clothes!
I think they would also encourage me to overpack 😂

Havanananana · 13/07/2025 09:03

Just pack the way Venessa Kensington does ...
