To think going away in the UK is very expensive?

Still weighing up what to do for our Summer holiday.

We were going to do a UK break this year as the past few years we’ve spent out on a very nice all inclusive abroad.

Found a UK holiday park that looks amazing To be fair we wanted something with an onsite pool, gym, hot tub, modern accommodation so hardly a cheap week camping, but It’s coming up £1700 for a week! There was a sale on but we missed because we couldn’t make up our minds.

For £2000 we could go to Greece self catering, but the hotel is very basic, been there before and it’s clean but dated and no real facilities just your accommodation and a pool, plus we’d all be sharing a room including teen.

For £3300 we could go to a small hotel in Greece half board with a few facilities. We could also go to Turkey for about £3500 all inclusive. They’re not the fanciest of hotels but they look perfectly clean and reasonable.

Just seems that abroad is good value considering your getting a flight and almost guaranteed sunshine.

WWYD?

It was ever thus.

I’m trying to book a UK city break for a special occasion right now - anywhere that looks a bit special is £800+ for two nights for a standard room.

I do wonder who is paying these prices.

Abroad you can definitely find interesting and charming accommodation that is reasonably priced. Not here.

I do think all holidays seem to be getting more and more expensive, and because of that more & more people are getting priced out of abroad holidays so the demand for UK holidays goes up.

It’s all well & good to say it’s £1700 for a holiday here, or £3300 for a week in Turkey when you have the money to do either so it’s a choice. Turkey may well be better value but if your max budget is £1700 (which is still a lot of money for a week) then you’re going to be choosing that one, the more people who want to do that then means next year the same week is £1800.

I just don’t really feel there are any good deals to find now really, we are going to Cyprus in a couple of weeks and although it is a lovely hotel/location, it’s cost nearly £1000 more than the same holiday did not even 2 years ago which just feels like a rip off. Same with UK staycations, especially in the school holidays- we had a lovely week in the Lakes in May, nice site, good location for what we wanted, and it was just over £1000 for the week which I thought was pretty fair for what it was, maybe a little bit more expensive than it was worth but still nice. We looked to rebook for next month and the exact same lodge, same site etc is £2239 for the week.

Eating out is likely to be more expensive in the UK too, plus the weather is not guaranteed, so you might find you spend money on indoor activities to get out of the cold and rain or you're just sitting inside the accommodation doing pretty much the same as what you can do at home for free.

I don't particularly care about accommodation being decorated to my taste because if we go abroad we spend pretty much all our time when we're not out and about on the balcony and only use the inside to sleep, shower and get food and drink if we have the facilities.

In your circumstances I'd look for a late deal on a package if you can't find cheap flights with separate accommodation. Greek SC would be fab because you can swim in the pool or warm sea, laze around in the sunshine and eat lovely Greek food that costs a lot less than eating out in the UK. You could also do similar in Spain, Malta etc.

Needmorelego · 11/07/2025 10:35

Depends what you want from a holiday though.
I like beaches and nature so I could get that in Greece or wherever, but I also like doing things like antique shopping especially for books/comics so I need to be somewhere where books are in English.
That might sound daft to some but that's one of my main hobbies.

Missey85 · 11/07/2025 10:38

Try living in Australia at least your close to places to visit I've been on one holiday in 40 years and that was just interstate 🙁

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 11/07/2025 10:43

You're right about the UK being expensive. I've just booked an Airbnb in the UK (because we want to take dog) and I think it's the most expensive accommodation I've ever booked (and I've stayed in some swanky hotels). What about France? You can stay in some wonderful small hotels that aren't expensive. Or the Netherlands? Good facilities on the coast for dch. Have a look on the Travel boards for ideas.

Notreallyme27 · 11/07/2025 10:45

It’s obscene. We were looking for a nice 4/5 bed accommodation in the countryside to rent for a weekend for our family to celebrate a big birthday. Couldn’t find anything decent for less than £3K. It’s worked out cheaper to fly everyone abroad.

asrl78 · 11/07/2025 10:47

The UK is an expensive country. I went for a two week self catering holiday in the Scottich highlands near the end of May and the accommodation alone cost me around £1400, that was for a small one bed flat. To add insult to injury, on the day I was travelling there, the weather flipped from one of the driest spring's on record to two weeks of clag and intermittent rain, combined with a freezing level low enough to make the highest mountains inaccessible for me. The UK is a sick joke sometimes.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 11/07/2025 10:48

Well, it depends if you have the extra £300 or £1300+ for the holiday abroad.

saraclara · 11/07/2025 10:49

I've just shelled out £2.5k for one week self catering at a UK coastal location for five adults and two small children in my family. Only after it was booked, did it occur to me that I could have taken us all abroad for less.

I think COVID did this. Prices leaped up when people had no choice but to holiday in the UK, and they've never come down again.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 10:51

I think 1.7k for nice accommodation with a hot tub is pretty reasonable!

Obviously you get better deals aboard but with young dc I hate the hassle of flying, waiting around. If I had access to a private jet I would be abroad all the time but alas.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 10:51

We are going to Devon for 2.5k I think.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 10:53

I don't like Turkey/Greece temps in aug & not interested in AI. What about France?

ToClimb · 11/07/2025 10:53

We went to Wales a few weeks ago. What with cost of hotel for 2 nights, fuel, day trips, and food and drinks I reckon we spent £900. The accommodation was a pub with rooms outside snowdonia and was £400 and that was the cheapest we could find.

We are going to Morocco for a week later in the year all inclusive and it's only costing £1100

Doseofreality · 11/07/2025 10:54

If the UK holiday is to Bainland then, yes, it is worth every penny. We paid £2.5k for a week there one summer and it was one of the. best holidays we’ve ever had.

Lafufufu · 11/07/2025 10:59

I'd do the uk

AngryBird6122 · 11/07/2025 11:20

Ive been looking at treehouse/cabin breaks and some of them are £400 a night. I don't get it!

Almostwelsh · 11/07/2025 11:26

The week in Greece for 2k isn't a comparable holiday, as you'd be cramped in one room.

The all inclusive in Turkey is almost twice the price of your UK holiday.

So, no you can't go abroad for the same money for a comparable holiday.

Zanzara · 11/07/2025 11:27

Look at the cost of property, energy and wages in the UK and things will become clearer. The UK is an expensive country.

Purplebunnie · 11/07/2025 11:29

Makes me realise my week before May half term in a converted stable in Dorset was a steal for just under £500.00. We actually paid a bit less than we did for the same week last year in North Devon. It was a last minute deal and it was less as there was only two of us

Xmasbaby11 · 11/07/2025 11:34

It doesn’t sound that bad for the facilities. We’re paying £1200 for a week sc in Northumberland in August. I really wanted a nice place and not to be cramped in a cabin etc. it is a lot but I find it stress free in the uk and don’t mind cooking, picnics etc so we don’t spend loads. 3 grand might feel better value for you but that’s way over our budget so wouldn’t happen.

GreenGully · 11/07/2025 11:41

It always has been. We could spend 3 weeks in the Seychelles for the price of some of our hoildays in Cornwall and Sandbanks. DH and I aren't keen on flying so it suits for now. The intention is to get a campervan and tour across Europe at some point and there is always the option of cruises.

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2025 11:45

One reason that hotels don’t do ‘all inclusive ‘ in the UK ( maybe half board or something like that , but not the deals you can get abroad with drinks and so on etc)

HarperStern · 11/07/2025 11:47

You can still get good holidays for less than that in the UK if you don't go to Cornwall and Sandbanks! Even in the Cotswolds, I just had a lovely cottage holiday for five for 900 quid-ish for the week - I just stayed away from the Chipping Norton nexus where everything is suddenly much pricier. Used the nearby town park lidos for pools, cooked for ourselves most nights and ate outside, made friends with lots of local wildlife, decent coffee and village shop in walking distance. It was great!

Last year in Pembrokeshire was cheaper still, and a bigger house.
