To think going away in the UK is very expensive?

Still weighing up what to do for our Summer holiday.

We were going to do a UK break this year as the past few years we’ve spent out on a very nice all inclusive abroad.

Found a UK holiday park that looks amazing To be fair we wanted something with an onsite pool, gym, hot tub, modern accommodation so hardly a cheap week camping, but It’s coming up £1700 for a week! There was a sale on but we missed because we couldn’t make up our minds.

For £2000 we could go to Greece self catering, but the hotel is very basic, been there before and it’s clean but dated and no real facilities just your accommodation and a pool, plus we’d all be sharing a room including teen.

For £3300 we could go to a small hotel in Greece half board with a few facilities. We could also go to Turkey for about £3500 all inclusive. They’re not the fanciest of hotels but they look perfectly clean and reasonable.

Just seems that abroad is good value considering your getting a flight and almost guaranteed sunshine.

Agree holidays here are very expensive . Paid around £900.00 for a week SC 15 years ago. Peak season at a premium .Sometimes the last week or two of August can be cheaper .My cousin and her family do a house swap with another family in a desirable town .Sometimes you can just offer to dog sit or house sit only .She has done this .If you live in a nice area .We sometimes just did days out when DC were small.Longer trips with a NT location and Supper out so no cooking when you got home .

Good facilities on the coast for dch. Have a look on the Travel boards for ideas.

@DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy
What does dch stand for?

if it's children, we've already got an abbreviation for that, which is DC. Can't you just use that for simplicity's sake?

Rude! I've been on MN for about 16 years and the abbreviation for children has always been dch or DCH.

I've never seen "DCH" as one of the abbreviations 🤔
(personally I prefer to type the word "children" for simplicity)

We are going to Menorca, 4* all-inclusive for a week, right on the beach with an on site included waterpark for just under £3000 (2 adults and one 5 year old). Just out of curiosity I had a look how much Center Parcs would be for the same week as we used to be big fans before we had to go in school holidays. It's insane!

Now compare the cost for 4 adults, which is what I have to pay now my youngest are teens. Center parcs works out cheaper by quite a long way, unless you're getting child prices for at least some of your party.

It wasn't really rude, you just didn't like it.

You understood what I was saying. I shall continue to use dch, thanks. Stop being so grumpy. It's hot and you're taking it out on me.

Yes I understand the prices are different value depending on your situation. This was just a direct comparison of costs for my family for that week. We used to go with another family before the kids were school aged and by going midweek and splitting the cost of a 3 bed between 4 adults (the kids shared the third bedroom) it made CP fantastic value!

wingingit1987 · 11/07/2025 14:41

I think it depends on when you go and what you are after. We try and visit England during the Scottish school hols, but before the English schools break up. We’ve saved a lot doing that. We also did a trip round various places in the UK last October before the English schools stopped for the oct break (Harry Potter studio tour, Legoland, Alton towers, mini break in Manchester) and managed to get a mix of hotels and nice air b&b’s reasonably priced. Places like Lake District we have been lucky with deals.

I wasn't the person who commented originally so I'm not taking anything out on you 😂
But what does the H stand for.
D is darling or dear (I think).
C is children.
So what's the H?
(Personally I find the abbreviations a bunch of silly nonsense but that's my personal opinion 😂)

£2k for a cottage in Devon over easter for 1 week. Was shit.

NoCyclingInTheUKforMe · 11/07/2025 15:36

Have you thought about Holland if you are campers. Lots of lovely sites there, public transport is first rate and an easy ferry journey from either Hull or Harwich. We just had two weeks with our caravan. Ferry was £800 (could be cheaper if you do day crossings) and two weeks at a Delft campsite for €800. Eating out is pretty reasonable too.

I've just shelled out £2.5k for one week self catering at a UK coastal location for five adults and two small children in my family. Only after it was booked, did it occur to me that I could have taken us all abroad for less.

I think COVID did this. Prices leaped up when people had no choice but to holiday in the UK, and they've never come down again.

Edited

I'm interested to know where abroad you can go for 2.5k for 7 people? Even just considering the 5 adults, that’s 500pp which seems like a really tight budget for abroad. Genuinely interested

A ferry crossing for two cars, and a gite in France. Also four of us got budget flights to Poland and a couple of one bed apartments for £1200 a couple of years ago. So I reckon we could do the same with all seven in three apartments at less than £2.5k

The problem with driving is if you're from the North and there's only one driver that's very tiring and wouldn't really be a holiday for me. I know you can get the ferry from Hull, but you have to book overnight cabins for that, it's not cheap.

That’s really good! I’d be more inclined to do the flights to Poland over the ferry as I don’t do well on water. Do you use Air BNB?

Those are two separate trip ideas.

I just checked and an absolutely beautiful large four bedroomed chalet in the mountains of a little ski/summer resort is £700 a week. That leaves £1800 for flights etc. And I just looked up those and for the seven of us it'd be £1200. Add a bit for a couple of pieces of hold luggage, and you're still way ahead.

If the UK holiday is to Bainland then, yes, it is worth every penny. We paid £2.5k for a week there one summer and it was one of the. best holidays we’ve ever had.

Edited

Where is Bainland? Any good for families with teens/young adults?

indoorplantqueen · 12/07/2025 00:02

It’s a rip ok. I was going to take my teen dd and her friend on a uk city break (involved a flight) to London and after counting the cost of flights, trains, hotel, food then activities (expensive) like a theatre trip and London eye, we actually got a trip to canaries for 5 nights (1 free child place) for cheaper. They’re happy to go to beach or pool and it’s cheaper for eating out so off we go!

Yeah I got that they were 2 trips 😆 that’s good going though. In recent years Ive been opting for flights / air BnB over package. We’ve been loving the adventure of it.

pambeesleyhalpert · 12/07/2025 19:39

Currently away in a beautiful place in the UK but cost an eye watering 6K for the week!

pambeesleyhalpert · 12/07/2025 19:42

When we go abroad we spend similar but for 4 of us this time it’s for 11 so different cos flights for 11 would be insane. Luckily the weather Is like were abroad!
