The weather doesn’t warrant sports tops & hot pants in the office

I work in a medium sized company. We are an office based with professional clients coming in for meetings regularly. I’m middle aged so I don’t know if it’s my age showing but I don’t believe bra tops & shorts are appropriate. Am I being unreasonable? Or am I just jealous of youth. I think even if I had my 30 year old figure I know I would find the lack of professionalism inappropriate. Unsure how to approach as I am a team leader but answer to a couple of people higher up.

Like weather presenters in strappy sundresses. I don't want to see your armpits, thanks.

We are on holiday right now and currently it's so hot at 29c (for us anyway being Scottish) down here in Wales. Anyway, in the city today there was a young woman wearing a thong!!!! I mean, on a beach, okay, not my thing at all, even when I was late teens, early 20s with the body to show off a thong, I didn't ever wear one, it wasn't my thing, not my personality at all to do that, but yes, on a beach some will wear it, and on a beach, okay, but walking down a high street??? I had to try and distract my very loud and curious 3 year old DS as he clocked it and said to me I can see that lady's bum !!! 😆We crossed the street so I could try and distract him as he kept asking me where her pants were... 😱

A bra top and short gym shorts in an office??? Also a no no. It's not great...

Oh!!! That’s unreal I would have loved to have seen that!!😂

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 11/07/2025 13:25

It's the whole athleisure sporty thing.
Personally I find a long floaty skirt and loose cotton top cooler than shorts and vests top.

I did do a double take at the shops yesterday. From across a car park I thought there was a naked woman. 😯 She was actually wearing skin coloured cycling shorts and crop top.

Cattery · 11/07/2025 13:27

I’ll probs get flamed but there was an horrific sight in Tesco yesterday. A young-ish woman who must have been about a size 24 or possibly more in a cropped top and lacey bottoms that had ridden up her bum. Yes I’m being judgy. Ok for the back garden but not a supermarket. Oh and I wasn’t the only one staring in disbelief.

loveforautumn · 11/07/2025 13:33

I find how some females dress very inappropriate but maybe that's my age too. On the school run this morning a parent had what looked like a bikini on. It was pretty grim and not what I wanted to see before breakfast.

I think the more school uniform is relaxed as seems to be the trend now the less likely it is that people understand what is appropriate workwear and what is not. Posts on here show schools introducing a new uniform of trainers, leggings, sweatshirts, polo shirts etc.

Office wear for me means something you can’t see up, down or through it. Shorts and cropped tops are a definite no.

fridaynightbeers · 11/07/2025 14:04

Totally inappropriate- cotton or linen dresses/culottes would be cooler and more professional

Cattery · 11/07/2025 14:04

It’s lack of standards starting with primary schools and onwards. The last 10-15 years has seen a massive shift. My sons didn’t go to school in trainers, plimsolls or beachwear. Proper school shoes and uniform. What I see now astounds me

spoonbillstretford · 11/07/2025 14:06

What do you mean by "sports tops"?

Hot pants are inappropriate but there's nothing wrong with wearing a polo shirt or plain top/short sleeve t-shirt.

Really? Schools are crazy now with uniform rules. At primary school we had a uniform but it was not compulsory and no-one wore it after the infants. On a day like today I'd be in a t-shirt and shorts.

If you went into see a solicitor/accountant and they had a bra top & shorts on would you think that was professional?

If it was a man or woman with a polo shirt, longish cotton shorts and a smart pair of sandals then I would think they were entirely appropriately dressed for an office today.

No primary schools round here from what I see. It’s a shame. It’s about discipline but there’s not much of that anymore either

Wow! Definitely should be left for the beach (at a push) a thousand percent inappropriate

We were on holiday last week. I saw a girl wearing what a sort of sarong/wrap skirt thing but she didn't have any visible underwear on and the split was to one side at the back so she had literal a whole arse cheek bared to the world. It was the Core d'Azur and yes it was 35 degrees... But we were in a trains station at the time. My husband's face was hilarious.

If the company can't keep the office cool they could close down for the duration. Unpaid leave for everyone.

How does that sound?

I'm working in primary care. I'm fully clothed.
We dont have AC.
I'd be happy to go home unpaid but I doubt the general population would be having any of that...

Catwoman8 · 11/07/2025 14:32

I am mid 30s and in shape, but i would never wear my sports shorts or strappy tops to the office regardless of how hot it is. There is a time and place and the office isnt one of them.

Maybe a polite reminder about dress codes is needed.

I worked in a lab in the summer of '76. People wore lab coats and underwear.
A loose cotton shift, maybe, over their underwear? It is very inappropriate to wear such revealing clothing in a professional setting. I wouldn't want to see my bank manager or vicar in a pair of budgie smugglers anywhere but the beach (possibly not then)

Underwear and lab coats is definitely a thing.

I resorted to this loads of time when I was a researcher and the mercury went over 35° in the lab.

The sweat would be dripping out of our gloves! Hellish !

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 11/07/2025 14:36

Shorts are fine... crop tops no.

viques · 11/07/2025 14:37

How does the thong wearer get to work? If they are coming in on the bus or train I hope they have the decency to stand not sit……

I agree, I have an ancient monsoon dress which is my go to in very hot weather, it is very loose fitting so the only part of my body it touches is my shoulders, the rest swishes about and causes a little breeze up my legs. Bliss.

MagpiePi · 11/07/2025 14:46

This wouldn’t be a problem in my office as the office manager is mean and scary, and she has the aircon cranked right up and it’s not worth the hassle to ask her to change it.

I have to wear a jumper and shoes and socks, and take breaks to hold my hands under the hand dryers in the toilets to warm them up.

marcopront · 11/07/2025 14:57

My daughter is 18 and has grown up in India and Africa. We are in the UK now. She is shocked by what people wear, I think the man walking into primark in a bra and shorts was the most shocking. I have seen more people in their underwear in a few shopping trips here than a year at home.

housemaus · 11/07/2025 15:24

Would be okay in my very relaxed, non-client facing office as long as you didn't have any client meetings via video - lots of people come in in gym wear, including bralet type vest tops and/or shorts, if they're going to the gym under our office at lunch. But I wouldn't assume it was okay in most offices.

There's being appropriate and then there's Victorian levels of prudishness... armpits are forbidden now??

caramac04 · 11/07/2025 15:30

There are lots of alternatives for hot weather clothing which isn’t revealing. A cotton or linen shift dress, a wafty maxi dress or skirt. I also think cotton and linen are much cooler than athleisure clothing.
