The weather doesn’t warrant sports tops & hot pants in the office

I work in a medium sized company. We are an office based with professional clients coming in for meetings regularly. I’m middle aged so I don’t know if it’s my age showing but I don’t believe bra tops & shorts are appropriate. Am I being unreasonable? Or am I just jealous of youth. I think even if I had my 30 year old figure I know I would find the lack of professionalism inappropriate. Unsure how to approach as I am a team leader but answer to a couple of people higher up.

Yes I agree it’s inappropriate.

LlynTegid · 10/07/2025 22:20

Best option would be for those who do not have client facing meetings on any given day to be able to work from home if they choose. When there is a defined heatwave at least.

ARatherStrikingMoustache · 10/07/2025 22:20

I would raise casually this with more senior colleagues to gauge their view on appropriate office dress.

Subbyhubby · 10/07/2025 22:26

How inappropriate are you talking and what services does your office offer. If you eg sell hot pants, then it’s probably not that unreasonable. If you’re Dunder mifflin then probably not

sparklychair · 10/07/2025 22:26

I worked in a lab in the summer of '76. People wore lab coats and underwear.
A loose cotton shift, maybe, over their underwear? It is very inappropriate to wear such revealing clothing in a professional setting. I wouldn't want to see my bank manager or vicar in a pair of budgie smugglers anywhere but the beach (possibly not then)

minnienono · 10/07/2025 22:29

Well I manage to wear a loose cotton dress over underwear despite my office hitting 33 today. Bellies should never be revealed in the workplace nor anything above mid thigh in my opinion, dresses, trousers etc can be fitted but not too figure hugging (eg those bum forming leggings) work is work

Well1mBack · 10/07/2025 22:37

We are on holiday right now and currently it's so hot at 29c (for us anyway being Scottish) down here in Wales. Anyway, in the city today there was a young woman wearing a thong!!!! I mean, on a beach, okay, not my thing at all, even when I was late teens, early 20s with the body to show off a thong, I didn't ever wear one, it wasn't my thing, not my personality at all to do that, but yes, on a beach some will wear it, and on a beach, okay, but walking down a high street??? I had to try and distract my very loud and curious 3 year old DS as he clocked it and said to me I can see that lady's bum !!! 😆We crossed the street so I could try and distract him as he kept asking me where her pants were... 😱

A bra top and short gym shorts in an office??? Also a no no. It's not great...

LastTrainsEast · 10/07/2025 22:44

If the company can't keep the office cool they could close down for the duration. Unpaid leave for everyone.

How does that sound?

This sounds perfect!!! The office is actually well air conditioned it’s a fairly modern one in the town centre so it’s not the issue of it being too hot indoors.

Wow! Definitely should be left for the beach (at a push) a thousand percent inappropriate

I WFH full time but today attended office for a half yearly get together and I was shocked at a couple of the women wearing very short dresses - I get it’s hot but I honestly thought they were taking it to an inappropriate level and they weren’t kids

TwinTantrums · 10/07/2025 22:51

I really don’t understand why it matters to anyone. As long as they’re in the office and doing their job, who cares what they’re wearing?

Yes exactly the same thoughts as you

Agree.
Crank up the air con to the max and they will soon re think their outfits Grin

TaborlinTheGreat · 10/07/2025 22:54

YANBU. It'd ridiculous and unnecessary. I've been in classrooms full of 30 kids all day and have managed to wear normal clothes, as have the kids.

And without air con, obvs.

HumphreyCushionintheHouse · 10/07/2025 22:55

I agree it’s not app for the office. Also, it’s been a while since I’ve heard the term hot pants, so thanks for that blast from the past.

Meadowfinch · 10/07/2025 22:59

Anyone (male or female) turning up in sports clothes in our office, would be quietly taken to one side and told to go home and change. There are plenty of ways to dress for extreme heat without inflicting their sweaty armpits, cleavage and thighs on colleagues and customers.

Men in our office today were mostly in chinos and cotton shirts. One man in tailored shorts, button down and deck shoes.

Women were mostly in cotton maxi dresses or wide leg trousers and short sleeved tops.

I've got to be honest, I did laugh at the thought of a little boy announcing that!

If you went into see a solicitor/accountant and they had a bra top & shorts on would you think that was professional?

OP posts:
DragonTrainor · 11/07/2025 12:42

I agree it doesn't sound appropriate

you can wear a loose dress or clothing that's relatively cool without being so exposed

No, I would assume I had been given an appointment with a very green trainee who was a bit clueless.

Are these trainees who could perhaps be forgiven for thinking beachwear is fine in the office? Or are they qualified/experienced people who should know better?

I agree with pp to sound out the more senior people.

legolegoeverywhereandnotadroptodrink · 11/07/2025 13:17

Totally inappropriate

beach wear isnt for the office

Dweetfidilove · 11/07/2025 13:19

This is the result of everyone being free ro do as they please, without judgement or criticism.

Did anyone pull her up?
