Would you take a baby out in this weather?

I am at home with a 9 month old and Dh says I shouldn’t take him out in this heat.
AIBU to think that’s nuts and with a hat and sunscreen I should be out enjoying the sun and not cooped up inside and a 9 month old should be out learning about life not just stuck in.
We have 3 months of summer left and I fully intend to be out and about.

Take him out to a shady tree in a park and enjoy!
I used to just put mine in a vest and hat at that age in this weather.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 09/07/2025 14:37

What does he thinks happens in hot countries? Of course you can go out!

Noshadowsinthedark · 09/07/2025 14:37

DH is nuts and needs to stop reading alarmist headlines about Summer being Summer.

Get out there!

alcoholnightmare · 09/07/2025 14:38

If he’s walking yet, little splashparks always fun if you have any local

StampOnTheGround · 09/07/2025 14:38

Enjoy it, and find some shade! We’d definitely not be staying in, although a nice break at a coffee shop with air con is a good a idea too 😍

JMSA · 09/07/2025 14:38

I can’t imagine being in a heatwave (I’m Scottish).
Hope you’re all doing ok.

WhySoManySocks · 09/07/2025 14:38

Of course I would!! Jesus. Hot countries exist and children do not spend 6 mo cooped up indoors.

Suncream, shade.

Makingpeace · 09/07/2025 14:39

YAbothU.

Baby should go out - but not in the sun.

Keep baby in the shade.

You definitely should wear your hat and sunscreen.

Enjoy your summer.

Fancycheese · 09/07/2025 14:39

If you don’t have cloud cover or a breeze, I’d wait until the real heat of the day had passed. It’s creeping up to 30 degrees where I am and it will exceed that this weekend. So I personally wouldn’t take a baby out in the heat of the midday sun, but in the morning/late afternoon I would.

I’d just seek shade and make sure they were covered and hydrated. I’m sure you would be sensible! I don’t think staying in all day is the answer, unless your baby is particularly sun sensitive. however there’s a reason that several Mediterranean countries have siestas. What’s that quote about the midday sun and mad dogs and Englishmen? 😂

AnchorWHAT · 09/07/2025 14:41

If you have a large parasol and dress baby appropriately for the heat, sunscreen, hat, and plenty of fluids its fine.

shirlem · 09/07/2025 14:43

Yes! Does your pram have a cover? If so baby will be protected from the sun, but use suncream and a hat and keep an eye on babies temperature and lots of water :) we've been going out daily and baby is 11 months

cloudyblueglass · 09/07/2025 15:09

Your DH is unreasonable.

Laserwho · 09/07/2025 15:24

Fine asking as you use the procaustions of the previous posters. My one of mine was that young I had to go out to pick up/ drop off my older kids l.

Fundayout2025 · 09/07/2025 15:32

Of course. How the hell do you get anywhere or do anything if you are Sat indoors with a baby.

My DD has a 6 month old.he's been dropped to the childminder , will be walked in pram on school run at least twice then collected to go home. And that's even if she doesn't take him to park/beach / toddler group etc

maddiemookins16mum · 09/07/2025 15:32

if properly shaded and hydrated no problem but yesterday I was at an outside tourist spot (a wildlife park) and a couple had what looked like a week old baby in their arms (no hat) as they watched the penguins being fed at 1pm. It was roasting. My choice for my newborn would not have been bright, hot sunshine but a cool, quiet shaded place.

Moonnstars · 09/07/2025 15:53

Depends what you are doing. I personally can't stand the heat so I would have gone out early in the morning to be home and avoid the hottest part of the day at lunchtime.
Primary schools with sports days this week near me have cancelled them because of the heat so I wouldn't find it comfortable taking a baby out in the sun for the day either.

TheatreTraveller · 09/07/2025 16:03

Wouldn't even cross my mind, you just use some common sense and keep them shaded/cool and hydrated. Both of mine had been on sunny holidays abroad by 7mths/9mths for their first time.

Harrysmummy246 · 09/07/2025 16:18

At midday in the full sunshine without precautions? No

In the shade, or cooler part of the day, protected as needed, yes. Although we have dogs too so there wasn't really an opt out of walking them when DS was small

Donotgiveashit · 09/07/2025 16:19

Absolutely,why would you not?

Birch101 · 09/07/2025 16:21

Yes of course, make sure you have extra milk available for hydration, and keep cool

Hodgemollar · 09/07/2025 16:23

I probably wouldn’t choose to take an infant out in peak sun in 30 degree weather just to sit in the blaring sun, but I would obviously go about my day as normal and still do things.

OutingHobbyWife · 09/07/2025 16:26

Neither of you are BU I don't think. I'd go out early or much later in the day/evening personally, wouldn't be outside around lunchtime as that's when the sun's highest. Would be a good time to come home for lunch and a siesta imo!

Also be careful using a pram/buggy. Saw a video the other day of the difference in temperature inside between just using the sun hood of the buggy and draping a muslin over for more shade. Was surprised how much it went up considering how thin they are.

elrider · 09/07/2025 16:27

Depends how hot it is where you are I suppose? Is it in the 30s? It's 15 degrees where I am today.

From about 30 degrees upwards I'd probably keep a baby indoors during the hottest part of the day, provided it was cooler inside (my house is cool but I know some really hold the heat).

fireplaceember · 09/07/2025 16:34

I’ve been swimming in the river this week and one of the women brought her child, think he is 11 months now
its a shady walk through the woods, then she went for a swim with child in the shade under a tree (with us!) and then did a little bit of paddling

seemed perfect for the weather and he LOVED watching the dog jump in and make a huge splash! Plus she got a swim in with us looking after him

Secularbeaver · 09/07/2025 19:29

My 5 month old walks the school run on an afternoon (40 mins each way....or almost an hour depending on what my 3 year old finds 🤣) and we usually go somewhere during the day, I'd go stir crazy. I LOVE being able to walk it on maternity leave and so do my kids.
I use a muslin over her legs and summer clothes and keep her out of direct sunshine if at all poss
