Would you take a baby out in this weather?

I am at home with a 9 month old and Dh says I shouldn’t take him out in this heat.
AIBU to think that’s nuts and with a hat and sunscreen I should be out enjoying the sun and not cooped up inside and a 9 month old should be out learning about life not just stuck in.
We have 3 months of summer left and I fully intend to be out and about.

They will just be grumpy and hate it if you take them out in the sun but somewhere cool and shady is fine, just strip them off. I do sort of hate the trend for I am going to carry on with my life regardless of the fact I have had a baby

As you said though, you just make adjustments as necessary.

Plenty of people do have to just get on with things as normal, especially if they have other children, work etc. Life can't revolve around the baby at all times.

Lilyhatesjaz · 10/07/2025 19:07

My DC are adults now but if I had a baby I would have taken them to tescos today to enjoy the air con and the freezers.

VoodooQualities · 10/07/2025 19:12

Somehow in the hot places on earth, people also have babies! Yeah I know... mind blown. But they do.

Dstoat · 10/07/2025 21:28

In the morning or the evening then yes. People who live in hot places don’t drag babies out in the midday heat. And please oh please don’t hang a muslin over the pram in the heat.

Mokel · 10/07/2025 21:45

Whatever you do, don’t drape a towel or muslin cloth over the pushchair. It traps the heat - making the chair area hotter

we’re going to Ikea tomorrow to make the most of the aircon!

PopThatBench · 10/07/2025 23:23

Keep them out of direct sun, even with suncream and a hat but yes you can enjoy your summer with baby.
Maybe try and avoid the midday peak sun as temperatures are exceeding 30 degrees, pop in and out of shops/enjoy the library or a café during the midday.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 10/07/2025 23:24

Of course he’s nuts

Vodkamartini3olives · 10/07/2025 23:36

How hot is it?. It's 28 where I live, just a regular summers day. I'm Sat at the lake and their are families with seniors, babies, toddlers and dogs. All seem be holding up just fine.

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 10/07/2025 23:56

It’s 30+ degrees and super high UV where I am.

I would avoid taking my 8 month old out in the hottest part of the day and certainly keep her out of the sun as much as possible, especially between 11-3. We’re both really fair. Both the pram and the baby carrier can make baby even hotter.

I absolutely wouldn’t fancy a day out all day in the sun at the moment 🥴

Summers are getting hotter here and I find it weird people
still act like it’s lovely weather when grass is shrivelled to a crisp and there are already hosepipe bans 😂

HMW19061 · 11/07/2025 00:10

Baby will be fine. Make sure you keep them shaded and just dress them in just a nappy so they’re not too hot.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 11/07/2025 07:37

I wouldn't take myself out in this weather but if you can find cool shade then enjoy.

Inmyhands · 11/07/2025 08:25

We stay cool in the house/in garden shade then head outside before 11 or after 3 if we fancy a walk or have errands to run.

tostaky · 11/07/2025 08:27

I would avoid going out between 11 and 3pm

ItDoesntHaveToBeASnowman · 11/07/2025 08:42

Might burn his paws on the hot pavement.

FlipFlopVibe · 11/07/2025 09:01

Absolutely enjoy it, I was on maternity leave last summer and I think it rained every bloody day of it! I’d definitely be heading out. Just be sensible about it which I’m sure you are

aGirlLikeJesamine · 11/07/2025 09:12

currently it gets hotter and hotter, and doesnt cool down until 8 pm
mornings would be better
but away from the sun

SemperIdem · 11/07/2025 09:31

It’s fine to go out, does your husband mistrust your ability to take sensible precautions or something?

Exactly!

im from a country where it’s this weather for 8/9 months of the year. We actually do stay indoors a lot and live under air conditioning. I find it amusing how people go on here absolutely toasting to a crisp, going to splash parks in this heat and I just put it down to kids going to a candy store and told there’s no limit.

back home we do go about life as normal, but kids are out early morning or late afternoon, you’re driven most places and there’s aircon everywhere.

OK that suggests that it's either a rich place you are from or you only know rich people that have aircon etc in their homes. I suggest that the greatest majority of people in asia and Africa live without aircon and being driven about

Whatdoidotoday · 11/07/2025 16:01

@Fundayout2025 from Africa actually. Are you from either places?

longapple · 11/07/2025 16:19

what's that thing about mad dogs and englishmen...?
we're lucky to have trees for shade in our garden. With my eldest at that age, I used to put some water in a tray and sit in the shade with my feet dabbling and read my book while they splashed. No way I'd slog through the heat to go somewhere (but then I wouldn't if it was just me and I could avoid it either)

I spend nearly half the year in Asia and have relatives there. I can confirm that in Cambodian villages the majority of people do not have air on. Often motorbikes rather than cars either.

Many of my workmates are Bangladeshi and say it's the same there.

I'm sure not all the places in Africa have aircon either. There's a big difference between gated places in South Africa and mud huts in Uganda for example
