Putting a chicken in the oven before doing the school run.

I set off at 2.50, cycle to school am home by 3.15 at the latest.

Woman at school said "what if the house burns down?" I said I would be rather out of the house if the house was burning down.

She also won't put on washing machine or dishwasher while out in case the house floods. Now this has happened to me 3 times, but being in or out made no difference IME.

If I put the chicken in when I get home it wouldn't cook in time as I work from home and my first pupil would arrive as I was still chewing.

No, I think that woman's being daft.

Although, it does sound an extraordinarily long time to roast a chicken .....

twentypence · 26/05/2008 06:47

We have dinner early and it's a big chicken.

Ah. In that case I think it's only the chicken that would find it unreasonable

2sugars · 26/05/2008 06:53

Oh, God, God, God. I thought you meant put it in in the morning

Freckle · 26/05/2008 07:57

And I misread the thread title and thought it said you put a child in the oven before the school run. Ooops.

SpookyMadMummy · 26/05/2008 08:14

Well, I would put it in the oven before you left.
I regularly leave food cooking in the oven. I have left casseroles and fruitcakes in there (not at the same time
How many people use a slow cooker left on for much of the day??

Cappuccino · 26/05/2008 08:17

how is the house going to burn down exactly?

are you cooking your chicken on an open fire in the middle of the kitchen?

Squirdle · 26/05/2008 08:26

Blimey nowt wrong with that! I have been out for 2 hours and left a chicken cooking before! That woman is a daft bat!

belgo · 26/05/2008 08:28

I always put the dishwasher and washing machine and sometimes tumble dryer on while I'm out. Is that bad?

SlightlyMadSweet · 26/05/2008 08:29

I often put a stew in before school run and swimmning.

When I was at school my mum used to prep a stew put it in the oven (at room temp...think of the bugs having a field day). I would come home at lunchtime and light a old dodgy gas oven with a match...

Cappuccino · 26/05/2008 08:31

if you leave a casserole in the oven on a timer it sits at room temperature

what is the problem? or what is the alternative? pay someone to come round to your house to put it in?

SlightlyMadSweet · 26/05/2008 08:35

I know...I was just dramatising....for something that is going to cook for 5hrs I think you could spike it with salmonella and it would be fine (but I am not about to try ).

MrsJohnCusack · 26/05/2008 08:38

mad as a meataxe

madmuggle · 26/05/2008 08:40

If my washing machine didn't get put on before I left the house there's a good chance I'd never have any clean knickers

Woman at school is a mentalist

Do it, its called multi tasking.

Psychomum5 · 26/05/2008 08:44

If I am raosting a chicken for our dinner, I always put it in before the school run.....mine goes in at 2pm!

with 7 people to feed from said chicken, it needs that long!!!

I did once however leave a spag bol on the lowest gas ring while I did a dancing run once, and went in to natter for a few mins.....and then said I must run as I had to get back to check on said spag bol.
the gasps of horror from everyone told me that leaving things on the gas in not really ok, and lo, when I got back, it had indeed blown out and the house was smelling very strong of gas.

I now have a slow cooker for times such as that, and that will be on all day, so wonder where the difference is regarding ovens etc???

but, your answer regarding wanting to be ut of the house if it burns down......exactly what I would say!

AbbeyA · 26/05/2008 08:46

I do it all the time! If you want to eat from fresh ingredients it is often the only option if you are out a lot. It is much better to leave a casserole cooking slowly than to rush in and microwave a ready meal when you get back. If I am very organised I use my slow cook pot and switch it on before I go to work.

AbbeyA · 26/05/2008 08:49

I thought that the whole point of an oven timer was that you could set it to come on and cook while you were out of the house.

JudgeNutmeg · 26/05/2008 09:46

I used to put the tumble dryer on until my last one broke whilst I was out. The drum stopped turning but everything else kept going. I came home to a celler full of smoke and burnt clothing.

guitar · 26/05/2008 09:48

according tothe fire dept you should never leave a tumble dryer on when out of the house because that is the cause of many fires when something goes wrong - an electic oven is fine imo as is a washing machine as who cares abotu a little water - but a gas hob? idiotic [

you callin me a idiot guitar???

yup, you would be right sometimes

!

bellavita · 26/05/2008 10:19

When I did the school run, I always put the meat in before I went, otherwise it would not cook in time.

I do go out and leave the washing machine on.

MrsWeasley · 26/05/2008 10:20

woman at school is mad

I bet she is jealous at you being so organised.
