WIBU to sell theatre tickets for more than I paid (please hear me out first)?

I’m genuinely wondering what to do about this and have had conflicting advice.

I bought theatre tickets to see Evita for my daughter for July, I picked and paid for the best seats I could afford, because she’s a massive fan of the actress playing Evita and it would be a bit of a big deal for us to go, stay in London etc.

My daughter has become really poorly and we won’t be able to make the show in July, so the box office said we could swap the tickets for a later date and hope that she’d be much better by then. Great! Only the seats we originally purchased have now shot up in price this last week and are about 3 times the amount I paid for them 😱 I can’t afford to pay the difference, so the only other option is to swap for much worse seats.

A friend suggested selling the seats we have now, for the price that they are at the moment (so would match the theatre ticket price or a bit less) so that we can use the money to buy the same seats we have for July, in September (if you see why I mean?)

What would you do? I don’t even know if selling them is an option to be honest, as I haven’t looked into it that much yet. I’m just so disappointed for her, as this is kind of a trip of a lifetime type of thing for us, but I don’t want to be a twat 🙈

Yes sorry, I maybe didn’t explain myself very well. We do have insurance, so I can get my money back but we still want to go. If all else failed and she was still too ill to go in September, then I would have claimed refund, but all we wanted to do was give our tickets to a later date (Sept)….I was just upset that the seats we bought have now shot up in price, so if I can’t get even slightly similar seats (and the whole thing surrounding the trip was that we had these fab seats if you see what I mean, as she loves Rachel Zegeler).
I wasn’t sure how I’d go about selling them to be honest, as I hadn’t got that far ahead yet. I wonder if I could do a swap somehow.
it’s such a shame we can’t go the date that @SplatSplash has 😔

Ah, I just googled kidsweek, Evita isn’t on the list :(

It is supposed to be racy that is why it won't be on the kids week. Sell the tickets and get what you can for them

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 18:39

@JMSA its not as far as I can see, no price on the actual tickets. I think we paid around £160 each for them and they’re now up to £350-£400 each!

Just go and watch Rachel Zegler on the balcony for free...

Then use the refund to book a different show on that same day

Whaleandsnail6 · 08/07/2025 18:46

Would they even sell if it isn't sold out?

I wouldn't risk buying tickets from someone unless the show was fully sold out or they were giving tickets at a massive bargain, which it doesn't sound like yours will be.

Edited

Actually just do this, at least she will be dressed !

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 18:57

@Whaleandsnail6 I’m not sure, there aren’t many tickets left with the seats in the front rows and the ones that are, seem to be megabucks now. I thought if I sold mine at a slightly lower price than the theatre price, I’d still be paying more for the new tickets but at least I could afford the similar seats to what we had. I’m not sure it’s going to be very straightforward though.
maybe I can just put an ad to see if anyone wants to swap, but I would t have a clue where to put it!

OP - are there any grand circle seats available for around £30? That's what we paid to see Evita and it was amazing. We had a good view and the atmosphere is great. So you could buy those and get your refund.

Just make sure you avoid the dates RZ is resting.

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 19:04

@UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld I would absolutely do that, but dd would be gutted if we missed the whole show 😂 I think I’ll end up just seeing how much extra I can afford and get more tickets for September, but the seats just won’t be anywhere near as good.
The annoying thing is, I’ll get money back for my tickets and then the theatre will just sell them for £350 each!

@RestlessDollyMaunder thankyou, I’ll have a look 😊

Make sure to enter the ticket lottery, and keep an eye on Twickets as they’ve had a good amount at reasonable prices.

Notsuchafattynow · 08/07/2025 19:13

They are excellent seats, I've seen it myself and would only recommend Stalls (no spoilers).

What a shame you can't go. We tried to book again before the run finishes, but like you say, they are £££ now!

whynotwhatknot · 08/07/2025 19:18

tvbh i wouldnt pay resale tickets off of a stranger if i could still get them from the theatre

I asked the theatre if they'd buy back for resale and they said they don't do that. Even though them last night is sold out.

It is, I saw it yesterday but there might not be many tickets left

Blades2 · 09/07/2025 18:50

Yes you would be. No real reason to flog them for more.
if it’s through Ticketmaster you can’t anyway.

Garfieldthecat · 10/07/2025 10:04

@Blades2 the only reason I wanted to sell them for more was to be able to buy similar seats for a different date, as the prices have gone up so much since I originally bought them, so the exchange wouldn’t have been like for like. I hadn’t even thought that far ahead about how I would sell them. I’m not even sure I can sell them on tbh….I think I’m just going to exchange them and get a refund if we can’t attend , at this stage I’m not sure if she’ll be well enough to go even in September.

RestlessDollyMaunder · 10/07/2025 11:08

Sorry to hear your daughter is so unwell, OP.

It's a shame the theatre won't exchange like for like.

MyMilchick · 10/07/2025 11:13

Normally against charging a higher price for tickets than you paid but in this case it's just so you can actually go so YWNBU

PermanentTemporary · 10/07/2025 11:13

I think of myself as someone with a moral compass, and if there’s one thing I would have zero issues with, it’s someone legally selling tickets to an event at whatever price the market will bear. I thought all the chuntering about the Oasis tickets was absolutely ludicrous. It’s hardly an essential is it? I don’t see why a band with a —big coke habit— —series of divorces— back catalogue that people want to hear shouldn’t sell tickets at any price they like, and I think that tickets to an exciting live show that people want to see should sell at any price too. Theatre is a huge enterprise that employs a lot of people and brings joy. Go ahead.
