WIBU to sell theatre tickets for more than I paid (please hear me out first)?

I’m genuinely wondering what to do about this and have had conflicting advice.

I bought theatre tickets to see Evita for my daughter for July, I picked and paid for the best seats I could afford, because she’s a massive fan of the actress playing Evita and it would be a bit of a big deal for us to go, stay in London etc.

My daughter has become really poorly and we won’t be able to make the show in July, so the box office said we could swap the tickets for a later date and hope that she’d be much better by then. Great! Only the seats we originally purchased have now shot up in price this last week and are about 3 times the amount I paid for them 😱 I can’t afford to pay the difference, so the only other option is to swap for much worse seats.

A friend suggested selling the seats we have now, for the price that they are at the moment (so would match the theatre ticket price or a bit less) so that we can use the money to buy the same seats we have for July, in September (if you see why I mean?)

What would you do? I don’t even know if selling them is an option to be honest, as I haven’t looked into it that much yet. I’m just so disappointed for her, as this is kind of a trip of a lifetime type of thing for us, but I don’t want to be a twat 🙈

Is the difference even that large with kidsweek discount or is dd older than 17?

BournardTourney · 08/07/2025 16:25

Sell it for the higher amount. Tickets sold privately are worth what the other person is willing to pay for them. Look at the cost of Oasis tickets, reselling for 1k+
I think you should easily find a buyer because it is a once in a lifetime performance

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 16:26

No, she’s 15. I haven’t heard of kidsweek discount, what is it @LIZS?

I think that's fair in the circumstances - you didn't buy them with the intention to sell for a profit or to be a scalper.

Hope your daughter is better soon.

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 16:28

Ah, I just googled kidsweek, Evita isn’t on the list :(

Could you put them on an ebay auction (NOT buy it now) with a starting price of face value and see what happens?

I know of someone who tried to sell some tickets for a band over the face value and the venue cancelled the tickets and refunded the original cost and said he was blacklisted for profiteering. 😱

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 16:47

Good idea @TwoLeftSocksWithHoles, Thankyou! I did wonder if I’d get in trouble if I sold them for more, even though face value if they were to refund us and re sell our tickets would be the much higher price! It’s madness!

Thankyou @LIZS. I’ve had a look using your link and there aren’t any shows we could make that are available and not many seats left to choose.

Worth checking back as they may release more

blunderdul · 08/07/2025 16:59

Tbh I think it’s shitty to try to sell them for more than you paid. I’m sorry your DD isn’t well but that’s the chance you take if you don’t buy insurance.

whynotwhatknot · 08/07/2025 17:06

you cant sell tickets on ebay anymore and you jhave to be careful advertising them for a higher price you can get blacklisted

the official resale sites only let you sell for face value dont know if you want to try and ask round privately

BournardTourney · 08/07/2025 17:09

I don’t see anything wrong with charging more, theatres do it themselves- one day a seat will be worth £95 and the next it’s £175. Then you have kidsweek and ticket lotteries and £20 tickets for certain members of public
We were lucky enough to see Tom Holland in Romeo & Juliet - if someone had been reselling their tickets after we saw it we definitely would’ve paid a higher price to see it again. You can’t just rewatch live theatre - even when it’s recorded for broadcast it’s not the same

Readyforseptember · 08/07/2025 17:18

I don't think it is that easy, especially if it isn't sold out. When I've tried to sell tickets on even at face value or below for either theatre or concerts privately I've really struggled - people mess you about for days saying they want them then ghost you, or offer you something stupidly low. Now I just go through axs or ticketmaster and resell officially. Maybe I'm not trying the right sites though.

SplatSplash · 08/07/2025 17:19

Can I jump onto your thread please and ask how you're thinking of selling them? I've got tickets for the last night of Evita butmy sister has just announced she's getting married that day!!!

I'm not sure how to sell them without getting ripped off somehow.

How would insurance have helped? It wouldn’t cover the difference for new tickets, just ensure the refund of her money.

I’d do it. You are selling them for the same price as the theatre, what’s wrong with that?

Perhaps you can swap with the OP!

JMSA · 08/07/2025 17:41

Is the original ticket price printed on the ticket?
That would leave a sour taste in my mouth as a buyer, irrespective of your unfortunate circumstances (hope your daughter is ok and feels better soon!).

Sloelydoesit · 08/07/2025 17:49

StubHub? You could sell them there

SplatSplash · 08/07/2025 18:02

Good idea!

would you like to swap @Garfieldthecat?

Mine are Front Row Grand Circle - although they are restricted view due to a rail so depending on how tall your daughter is so maybe an issue.

Feel free to DM me if you're interested.

Marble10 · 08/07/2025 18:07

On a lot of legit ticket resale sites they don’t let you list for more than the face value.
So unless you sell to someone privately, I don’t think it’ll be possible.

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 18:08

@blunderdul I do have insurance, I don’t want a refund. I just do t want to pay another £400 for tickets that were the same amount as we paid, but for a later date 😔

Insurance means you can get your money back. Unfortunately other dates pricing isn’t relevant. You take your chances when you buy these things. Turns out OP has insurance but doesn’t want a refund.

Garfieldthecat · 08/07/2025 18:30

@SplatSplash Ours are centre bit of the stalls in row F but for July 17th, ah what a shame, that’s one of the only days we can’t go!

OP posts:
SplatSplash · 08/07/2025 18:35

I think yours are worth way more than mine so looks like not a fair swap for you unfortunately. Shame it would have been a perfect solution.

Hope you find a buyer soon.
