To ask if anyone has/has had a pixie cut?

I really don't like my current hair, after a bad decision at the hairdresser's it's a chin length bob with a fringe, choppy with short layers on top.
If I don't straighten it it looks horrendous..thinking of trying a pixie?
My hair doesn't grow quickly so I'd probably be almost a year until I get something half decent.
I know there are women aplenty with short hair but looking around and in my friendship circles the vast majority have at least shoulder length.
Worried my partner will find me less attractive too, and that I'll just look less feminine. I know it's just hair! Can't stick out several months of what I've got right now though.

I went from long hair to a pixie and absolutely love it! It's so easy to look after! Granted it has to be trimmed every 6 weeks, but it's worth it to keep it looking sharp. I say go for it OP!

Henrietta1000 · 07/07/2025 20:15

It's already very short..I can get it into a tuft of a ponytail but all the neck hair sticks out so looks odd.

I have had just about every length of hair and never regretted going shorter - got none at all at the moment! It can still be styled in a feminine way (see Anne Hathaway, etc), or you can spike it up / slick it back for an edgy look. Do it! It'll grow back quickly if you don't like it.

Imicola · 07/07/2025 20:23

I love my hair in a very short pixie cut. No need to brush or comb, no need to dry, and if you get it cut regularly it always looks smart and stylish (so long as you have a hairdresser who can do short hair well, which is not a given). I've spent a year growing it out but have now had a cut I hate so im considering getting rid of it all again.

Rainyday4321 · 07/07/2025 20:25

Team short hair here. Still very feminine overall look. Actually looks much better (on me) than long hair- distinctive and super low maintenance day to day. Have it cut pretty religiously every 6 weeks

Mandylovescandy · 07/07/2025 20:26

Yes, I loved it and it was great and so easy for summer. My hair grows really slowly as well so it take ages to grow out and I did look a bit weird for a while as it did that but thinking of cutting it again as fed up of it being slightly longer again as all I do is scrape it back in a ponytail

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 07/07/2025 20:28

If you’ve got a very distinct and delicate, bone structure, ideally big eyes, and are generally very pretty, it can look amazing -

but it looks shite on anyone else, even Jennifer Lawrence looked a bit like an egg.

(so no I haven’t!)

DoYouReally · 07/07/2025 20:47

Might be going against the grain here but I had one 20 years ago. I love it for about a month, then it was a nightmare after that.

It needed constant cutting and growing it out too forever and the in-between stage looked rubbish too.

I will never have hair that short again.

merryhouse · 07/07/2025 21:03

I always get a pixie cut - though I haven't actually had it done for ages, so it's quite long now. As it grows out I just roll with it till I get bored of having to tie it up for karate Grin

When I first had it done in 2013 I discovered why it's considered a lesbian style - every woman I knew said "oh I love your hair!" and almost every man I knew said "oh - do you like it?"

Mummblebee · 07/07/2025 21:15

I think it really depends on the face shape. I tried really short hair and it was not flattering at all with my oblong head haha. Why not try extentions o?

StoneofDestiny · 07/07/2025 21:45

Best haircut I've had and had it for years. Was easy to keep, but needs regular trim if your hair grows fast. Shows off your earrings well. Always looked neat. Fab in hot weather like this.

Only recently grown out - but not happy with it. Mid experiment with length and colour right now.

statetrooperstacey · 07/07/2025 23:13

I had short hair for years when I was a teenager then went short a couple of times as an adult and would have to totally disagree with pp saying how easy and low maintenance it is!! Had to wash and style it every day without fail or it looked shite. When you wake up with bed head there is no ponytail solution, and if I didn’t dry it quick enough it also looked shite . Your face is also very exposed, I wouldn’t like that now but maybe that doesn’t bother you. Personally I think short hair is a lot of work but if you want to, go for it.

Sonolanona · 07/07/2025 23:24

I had your cut..hated it... and went for a pixie in August 23. Loved it for a week... then hated it, I missed having much hair and had to do it every day or i looked scruffy. My hair has been growing out ever since (with trims) and is finally back to looking like my hair!

I had visions of looking elegant and cool... reality was I looked like my Dad😂
The early grow out stages were awful...I looked like a mushroom for ages

I still WANT another pixie but know that the reality doesn't suit me.
You might love it and never look back, but I didn't!

I've seen plenty of people who look shite with long hair. You are talking absolute rubbish.

And yes, I have one. Every now and again I think I might grow it a little (it's been short for years, but longer than it is now) and then I give myself a good slap. I even told my hairdresser that if I should ever tell him I'm growing it he is to ignore me. It is so liberating to have such short hair, I do literally nothing to it, just get out of bed in the morning and go.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 07/07/2025 23:41

I've had all lengths, easiest of all (if you have straight hair) is shoulder length with a fringe - that's why every middle aged German woman has this style.
Pixie was high maintenance for me: constant trims, some styling. With feminine clothes and make up it looks amazing and sexy.
But if you've never had a pixie cut I really recommend it. Do it and then find out how YOU feel. What does it matter what a stranger in the Internet feels?

Dear OP,

Pixie cut’s is a lifestyle.

Pixie cut’s success is 50% good, regular cut - sharp or soft. You need to look for a technical cut specialist. There are decisions to make on how short it is, how layered, open ears or covered up, clean neckline (clippers) or softly finished, long sweeping fringe or short. Consider the texture of your hair and your styling skills, will your hair lie to way you need it to. You may need travel mini straighteners, my GHDs are amazing.

The other 25% is daily wash and styling. Bed head is real. It’s like a bird nest.

The last 25% is wearing it with attitude. Wear it with a touch of arrogance or vulnerability. Pixie cut’s is perfect for accessorising with earrings. Make up and scent can highlight or soften the edginess. It’s he most stylish haircut but you need to consider the whole outfit. It stops you from looking frumpy because you go out of your way to make sure you do not not.

My DH cannot get enough of my neck when I had a fresh cut. I have had so many compliments from men on it over 25 years, even as I get older and in mid forties now. People notice the effort around your whole look, not the haircut alone, but the haircut is what draws attention.

If you want to make it work, prepare to commit to daily effort and have a bit of fun.

This is well said. However, everyone has different hair and we have no idea about OP's.

I don't suffer from bed head, nor do I wash my hair daily, and I never style it. Maybe I am very lucky, but I find I don't need to do anything at all, other than run my fingers through it after I have (weekly) washed it.

lurchermummy · 08/07/2025 07:42

I’ve basically had the same pixie haircut since I was 18 (I am now 57!) with slight variations of length and style. I grew it out j to a bob at some point and when I look back at the photos now it looks awful. I have thick hair so it needs lots of layers and chopping into. But essentially I know it suits me. I will probably have the same hairstyle now until I die!

RCJJ · 08/07/2025 07:44

I had one for the majority of my 20’s, loved it best hair I ever had! Agree with another poster though the daily styling is real as you wake up with it everywhere. I’d still have it if I still had the cheekbones for it but alas, in my 40’s they’ve left me!!

LikeThatNotThat · 08/07/2025 07:49

I loved having a pixie cut, it felt very freeing! However, it only looked good for about 3 weeks after being cut, I found I was having it done once a month which got expensive.
Growing it out was a nightmare and I hated my hair for a long time 😂
People regularly assumed I was a lesbian 🙄
Now it's longer people think it is helpful to tell me how much better it looks longer, they didn't like it short etc.
I once went to a fancy dress party wearing a long blonde wig - when I got hot and took the wig off people felt the need to comment that I looked better with the long hair. One man shouted "grow your hair!" at me as I was leaving the party.

I loved having a pixie cut when it was fresh and exactly how I wanted it (even if other people didn't like how I looked, who cares) but I'd never have it cut that short again. Too high maintenance and very difficult to undo 😂

DublinLaLaLa · 08/07/2025 07:50

…reality was I looked like my Dad @Sonolanona

😆😆😆

EggnogNoggin · 08/07/2025 07:56

I loved mine but echo others - it's high maintenance. No boyfriend has ever voiced an opinion (imo it's a certain type of man that holds an opinion on that)

What I will say is that it's a bit like wearing dungarees - if you want to look feminine, you need to be doing your hair and makeup. You may not care to, and that fine, I often didn't, but it does look very different dressed up and dressed down.

Branleuse · 08/07/2025 07:56

mines sort of between a long pixie and a mullet because ive had an undercut the last few summers too, which can look either quite punky or it can be done more feminine too.
I dont think i could ever go back to longer hair now. Its such a joy to be able to just wash it and it not need drying or styling. particularly in the summer. It has massively helped with my menopausal overheating too.

I love the look of lovely long hair and fancy styles, but i cant stand how it feels

EggnogNoggin · 08/07/2025 08:01

And I know you didn't ask this but don't jump from the frying pan into the fire. You hate what you have now and you say it will take months to grow out; it will take a year just to get where you are now.

I'd advise speaking to your stylist about ways to grow it out and take some time to make a considered decision to get a Pixie, not as a fix to get away from what you have.

What I will say about a Pixie is that it's fantastic for retraining yourself and getting out of bad habits. Mine stopped me twiddling my hair and all the damage that came with it. So I'm def pro Pixie, but it's a big change and everyone will notice

Graters · 08/07/2025 08:37

They can look amazing, but I think they are quite high maintenance too keep looking good. Also, I think they're pretty ageing on anyone in their late 30s and up, I realise that may not bother people and it shouldn't, it's your hair! I think it's mostly an association thing as longer hair is most popular amongst Millennials and younger.
