To ask if anyone has/has had a pixie cut?

I really don't like my current hair, after a bad decision at the hairdresser's it's a chin length bob with a fringe, choppy with short layers on top.
If I don't straighten it it looks horrendous..thinking of trying a pixie?
My hair doesn't grow quickly so I'd probably be almost a year until I get something half decent.
I know there are women aplenty with short hair but looking around and in my friendship circles the vast majority have at least shoulder length.
Worried my partner will find me less attractive too, and that I'll just look less feminine. I know it's just hair! Can't stick out several months of what I've got right now though.

They aren't high maintenance, and they aren't aging, if you have a good hairdresser who knows what they are doing. I look fresher and younger when I have a pixie, and I had one for most of my 30s and then again into my 40s. The thing that women who are anti-pixie seem to not understand is that the essential quality to pulling off a pixie is self-confidence. Not perfect bone structure or amazing Disney princess eyes or petite features. Just self-confidence and a willingness/desire to not look like everyone else. It takes confidence to not attach one's self-worth to long hair or to hide behind it.

The good hairdresser bit is key here though. I honestly think the two mid 30s women I know who got pixies lately look at least 5 years older than they did before, and older than their actual age. Which is fine if they don't mind, but I wouldn't want that and wouldn't want to take the risk that my hairdresser was good at them.

I have had short hair since my 20s and I got a Pixie two weeks ago :).

It helps improve my hair texture and make it look thicker. It also feels liberating.

It is light blonde and the colour is easier to maintain as well on shorter hair.

Go for it! I was advised to trim it every 5 weeks.

I have never seen anyone look older with a Pixie cut...

I think women are so conditioned these days to believe that long hair is the best and that anything else is 'masculine' or 'ageing' which is rather sad.

If you’ve got a very distinct and delicate, bone structure, ideally big eyes, and are generally very pretty, it can look amazing -

but it looks shite on anyone else, even Jennifer Lawrence looked a bit like an egg.

(so no I haven’t!)

Yes.
I sort of have that, my hair is crap. Pixie was the best choice.

ThatPeachMaker · 08/07/2025 10:01

I shave my head with clippers and dye it platinum blonde. what do you want to know? Its definitely a commitment but it feels fantastic and suits me. I still need to use good conditioner and shampoo and hair oil but that's because it's bleached. I'd also recommend getting a drastic colour change to make it pop and short hair is a lot easier to dye.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/07/2025 10:07

Personally think it looks better as an above poster said if you are very slim, good cheekbones and pretty- I’ve had it a couple of times when younger and always felt like a bloke unless I slapped a lot of make up on -

Appleblum · 08/07/2025 10:07

I went from long hair for over 20 years to a pixie cut and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're prepared to go in for a trim every 4 to 6 weeks. It's low maintenance in the sense that it's so quick to wash and dry. However once it starts growing out a bit my hair starts sticking out in weird angles and I have to spend time styling it with a hair iron. With long hair once it dries I can give it a brush in the morning and leave the house. It also loses it's shape very quickly and stops looking nice after 3 weeks. With long hair I can go in every 4 months for a cut. I'm now in the midst of growing it long again.

ThatPeachMaker · 08/07/2025 10:09

I don't recommend shaving its just that all the hairdressers around me seem to be incredibly busy these days. I dont know what's happening it's as bad as the drs three week waiting list or pay for a really expensive one. I'm glad their business is booming after COVID though that must have been a nightmare!

Henrietta1000 · 08/07/2025 10:10

Ok I'll say it, I'm worried about looking butch and I know some hairdressers get too scissor happy.

Sounds like you need a decent hairdresser to give you a consultation. They can give you the best advice about all of these things. Treat your self !!

ThatPeachMaker · 08/07/2025 10:14

you can get hair apps on Google play that will take your photo and show you what you will look like with them on.

ExpertArchFormat · 08/07/2025 10:16

I had a pixie cut in the past but found it too high maintenance. It looks great for the first 48 hours but then needs loads of extra processes, and needs frequent re-cutting to keepitin shape. I now have a much easier short-back&sides, longer on top which I'm happy with.

Your partner will not find you less attractive and you will not look less feminine. Your hairlength contributes very little to either of these.

ThatPeachMaker · 08/07/2025 10:17

long Bobs are really really in at the moment and are always sexy.

tripleginandtonic · 08/07/2025 10:21

Men don't tend to have pixie cuts so I dint think it's any less feminine than longer hair. I think eyes pop more with shorter hair, if you've got good bone structure it makes it more defined too.

My friend had a pixie cut, was on a dating app and men kept saying 'I don't normally like short hair but I love yours!' Awful

I had a pixie cut for twenty years in various styles - layered, short spikey, highlighted etc, and was happy with it. Then during lockdown it grew out and to be honest, I so much prefer it now. Short hair is easy to look after - wash and go, but one length is so much easier! I can tie it back , have more fun with styling, and need far fewer visits to the hairdressers.

However, there are a lot if nice pixie cuts out there so gave a search. I always line Anne Hathaway.

Iheartmysmart · 08/07/2025 10:24

I’ve got really short hair. Every now and then I grow it into a bob but then realise it just hangs there like curtains and goes frizzy if it’s remotely humid, wet or hot. And I can’t be arsed with it so back to the hairdressers I go to get it chopped off.

My hairdresser is male and great at cutting short hair. I go every four weeks for a trim then I just wash my hair every day and use a bit of styling powder once it’s dry. Takes a matter of seconds.

KimberleyClark · 08/07/2025 10:25

I had a pixie cut back in the 90s. I certainly didn’t need to wash it every day. I now have a chin length bob and still don’t need to wash it every day. It’s very thick and doesn’t look or feel its best straight after washing - takes a day or two to recover.

Long hair can look shite - putting it in a ponytail won’t hide that it needs a wash andI find ponytails themselves a meh style unless it’s a high swingy one and the hair is in tip top condition.

Mercedesaintmycar · 08/07/2025 10:26

it really depends on your head/face shape. They can look absolutely great on some and not so good on others.

DD has one for a while and we maintained it at home as the cost of keeping it up at the hairdresser is high. I would consider that too.

What's so awful? Clumsy way of giving a compliment maybe, but nothing worse than that

BestLeftAnonymous · 08/07/2025 14:37

As a woman who keeps her hair short, I can say a great deal depends on the cut and how it suits your face. A good stylist can go short and not make it look boyish, but it requires skill. Be sure you are going to a stylist who knows how to cut short hair. Not all do.

In terms of maintenance, I find longer short hair is high maintenance, but short short hair is usually easy and less than 5 minutes in the morning. Some women need that extra length and that requires more work. Personally, I am good with less hair and more sleep. All short hair needs regular trims, so expect to return every 4 to 6 weeks, If you cannot do that, better to stay with long hair.

Some men hate short hair on women and many do not really care either way. My husband likes my hair short and is used to it. I hope whatever you do turns out well.

SkiAndTravelTheWorldWithMyDog · 08/07/2025 14:39

I went from nice bob to a pixie and it was a disaster. It has taken 2 years to grow it back. It really didn't suit me but it could suit you.

OrangeSlices998 · 08/07/2025 14:40

Recently had my hair chopped into one, I had shoulder length thick hair after pregnancy and I couldn’t be arsed with any styling of it and so it lived in a bun! Got it cut into a bob but still ended up with it in a ponytail half the time so thought sod this and got the chop. I had one years ago, I loved it, growing it out was a pain though. Love how easy it is now, a quick blow dry if I can be bothered or I use sea salt spray and leave it to air dry.

ArmySurplusHamster · 08/07/2025 14:42

I’ve never had a pixie cut, but I did once pay to have a gnome beaten up.

Fibrous · 08/07/2025 14:42

I had a pixie cut and I have the right kind of face for it, but I had the wrong kind of hair for it. I have a wave and it waved all over the place and was uncontrollable and always went the wrong direction.

I now have longer hair (still above shoulder) but no matter what I do, I end up with a mullet pretty quickly. Which I've just embraced. I get lots of teenagers saying they like my hair, absolutely no one of my generation (middle age). 😀
