Until today when DP told me. I was very surprised as it never occurred to me. I also can't believe that they got away with saying it on TV in the 80s during family viewing time!

Pretty sure it’s not penis

landlordhell · 06/07/2025 19:16

It depends on the context. ‘My plonker’ means penis. But , ‘you plonker’ means idiot.

RAPSMom · 06/07/2025 19:20

You plonker = you idiot 😂🤣😂

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends

Never, ever, ever heard anyone say this. I've lived in lots of different regions as well.

I grew up east London/Essex and absolutely heard this - though not often and not for many years now.

Your name actually proves my point about multiple meanings.
To me "wee" means piss or urine.
But I have sufficient knowledge to realise it can also mean "small".

Where did you get this idea from?

Can't remember, any more than I recall how I know 'the dog's bollocks' means 'outstanding'. Osmosis is the best I can do. Oh - and everyone in my vicinity thought the same!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 06/07/2025 20:25

It does in some parts of London.

A ninny was a "canting, whining, beggar" originally !

sounds about right tbh 🤔😆

CorrectionCentre · 06/07/2025 22:07

Definitely means penis. I think it was its use in Only Fools and Horses that meant that lots of people didn't realise it it! It became such a well known mainstream insult.
I remember when I worked in the Local Authority I used it in an email to a colleague referring to myself as a plonker for doing something stupid, and the censor software picked it up and reported my email!!

Exactly as the use of prick dick and cock!
"Dont be a dick" means don't be an annoying idiot. Plonker just sounds sillier and was normalised by its use on mainstream tv. They are all used as insults because they are referring to someone being like a penis!

In much the same way Scunthorpe is a town in Lincolnshire, I believe ?

It’s a villiage in Sheffield

.

They’ve missed out to plonk, as in plonk down or sit or place down heavily (perhaps that comes from the first definition), and plonk as in wine eg “I’ll pick up some cheap plonk”. Or “I don’t want any of that cheap plonk”. It seems it’s a very versatile word 😂

I have never heard of plonker meaning penis. I thought it was popularised from only fools and horses.

Tha.t's what I thought

pharmer · 07/07/2025 01:01

It means both
It has 2 meanings

Rayqueen · 07/07/2025 01:13

Plonker is the meaning of the person who started this topic. Get your facts right.

LBFseBrom · 07/07/2025 01:36

I don't think it does mean 'penis'.

Elbowpatch · 07/07/2025 06:37

If you asked for plonker and chips at the local chippy where I lived back in the 80s, you would get a jumbo sausage and chips.

Draw your own conclusions.

eleanorwish · 07/07/2025 06:41

Berk does mean the c word, it’s a shortened from the Cockney rhyming slang Berkeley Hunt

EBearhug · 07/07/2025 06:56

The one that I think is the most surprising is the word 'berk' - which has long been widely used as a completely innocent, child-friendly word, the equivalent of 'silly billy' - when it's actually rhyming slang for probably the most offensive word that you could possibly call somebody: as in 'Berkshire Hunt'.

I remember our French A-level teacher tearing a strip off one of the boys for calling another a berk. "You wouldn't use that word in front of the ladies if you knew where it came from!" Now, I don't know which of us he thought most likely to go and look up it's etymology, but it wasn't the boys... (Also I knew the boys were quite capable of calling each other cunts out of earshot of any teacher, and they were just using berk as wally, idiot, plonker - the meanings of words change, whatever their origins.)

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 07/07/2025 07:02

Why are posters STILL saying her husband is wrong despite multiple people confirming their own understanding and posting links to sources agreeing?

Elbowpatch · 07/07/2025 07:03

My father used to get angry if we called anyone an “old bag”. Mildly offensive to us, but to him it meant an “elderly prostitute”.

BoudiccaRuled · 07/07/2025 07:07

Used in the same way as dipstick, and - now that I think of it - same meaning!

OED backs up what lots of us have posted from our own experience and usage.
The use of it as "idiot" is a later evolution of usage which is now more common.
