at their reunion concert. Distasteful?

Your user name is from a series about a crack dealer. Don't you think that's a bit distasteful?

Bridport · 05/07/2025 09:52

Distasteful.

What a lovely 1950s word. Conjures up images of starched aprons, doilies under scones, crumpets for tea and being bored shitless on Sundays.

namechangeGOT · 05/07/2025 10:00

No I don’t think it’s distasteful. I also can’t wait to hear it on the 20th. It can hardly be claimed as a GG song anyway - it’s a sample. Do you think the same about any gynaecology appointments/treatments you have based going on the person who created some of the techniques? Of course not.

GG is an horrendous person. MJ (in my opinion) was an horrendous person. J Marion Sims was an horrendous person. Their work? No.

LeaAndDer · 05/07/2025 10:06

People get so offended by anything these days.

Meth, not crack. Slightly less distasteful.

Absentmindedsmile · 05/07/2025 11:37

Don’t really care tbh. They were annoying twats then and they still are. But what do they care! ££££

No more Tchaikovsky!

Oh no! What did he do ?No him as well ?

SwearyYellowStartish · 05/07/2025 12:12

The most important fact being omitted is just that Oasis didn’t open with a Gary Glitter song.

The desperate desire to be outraged is ugly.

If we turn away from every piece of music, art, book or film that involved the work of a child abuser, then there would be a very long banned list indeed. No more Elvis, no more Rolling Stones, to name two off the top of my head. When an artist releases their work, it is given to the public and becomes part of culture. Some people may feel its tainted by the behaviour of the artist. Others may feel we don't need to give up something good just because a bad person gave it to us. In the long list of things I find distasteful about the Gallaghers, playing this song is low down.

The BBC wouldn't be able to give out a very clear message of their true moral stance by keeping the statue of Eric Gill in a proud, prominent position...

The thing is, Gary Glitter had some good songs. If only they could be severed from the vile person.

Yes, I agree. I always loved Two Little Boys as a guilty-pleasure song that stirs up the emotions, but it's forever tainted by that monster now.

He didn't even have anything more than a mediocre singing voice; if only it had been recorded and popularised by any of a thousand other artists who weren't wicked child abusers.

Grapewrath · 05/07/2025 12:31

Hello is an oasis song lol
It carries a small sample from the Gary Glitter song and was long before any convictions.
Honestly there is nothing to be offended about- that’s from someone who doesn’t even like Oasis

That's what I was thinking

They couldn't have opened with any other along could they 😆

As pp's have said, if we didn't separate the artist from the music, there would be no RHCP, Bowie, Prince, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, the list is endless.

I think it's abhorrent btw and does put be off the artist, but using the same 5 words in a song is really not an issue.

I probably do not really want to know ... why is PRINCE on this list @ColinOfficeTrolley ...

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 05/07/2025 12:46

In the US they quite often play a bit from Rock N Roll Part 2 as part of the hype music at sports matches. It was a bit weird to hear it in a big family oriented event but I don’t think most people would have thought anything of it.

dayswithaY · 05/07/2025 12:50

Meanwhile there is a West End musical dedicated to Michael Jackson.

dayswithaY · 05/07/2025 12:51

@YesTonightJosephine I think Prince’s ex wife accused him of coercive control.

Ahh ... appreciate the update @dayswithaY ... I guess I have some unpleasant reading ahead of me ...

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 05/07/2025 13:00

I am a big Prince fan but he wasn’t a very nice person, I’m afraid. Wendy and Lisa called him Prince when he was being a megalomaniac in the studio, and “Steve” when he showed glimpses of the shy wee guy they knew back in Minneapolis.

EstherGreenwood63 · 05/07/2025 08:35

Don't hear enough complaints about Michael Jackson's music being played. It was a sample. Can't get worked up about it tbh.

Michael Jackson was never convicted of child abuse. Some people made allegations, some people who were round him as kids said totally not true. Gary Glitter has been convicted, and multiple times

I may have been living under a rock but why RHCP and bowie?

BlueandPinkSwan · 05/07/2025 13:15

What is wrong with some peeps on here? It's a song by Oasis, but who really gives a toss anyway it's just a lyric and music?

Details of Anthony Kiedis' troubling sexual assault history

I dare not ask about the other artists mentioned either ...

JackGrealishsCalves · 05/07/2025 13:18

It was Hello which was the perfect opening song for a reunion concert and was written back in the mid 90's and it wasn't even an actual GG song.
Oasis clearly don't clutch pearls thankfully
