DD20 car serious safety recall - left with no car?

Doornon · 03/07/2025 06:38

DD20 lives at home and drives a car to work that’s had a stop drive notice put on it urgently. You need to get a slot with a dealer to carry out the recall but some people are having to wait months for the repair. We couldn’t get through to anyone yesterday by phone so I will try again today. She won’t be insured to drive the car as it’s unsafe

DD is too young to hire a car as you need to be 21. I think the manufacturer will maybe give some compensation if there is a long wait, but we don’t know this for sure. They are NOT giving courtesy cars.

I am not sure what to do.

DD’s job is shifts, 10 miles away so I’m having to take and collect her as no direct public transport at all. I also have a FT job in the opposite direction! I’m already exhausted

She can’t work from home or change her shift times

Public transport doesn’t run at her shift times and isn’t direct (would involve 2 hours of changing/waiting)

She could get taxis but this will be very expensive there and back and not sure if she will be able to claim any costs back.

Insure her on my car at our cost and then I hire a car?

Ask my job to WFH so I can lend her my car?

WWYD? I am frazzled by this

We’ve been lucky enough to get booked in but they just say we have to have it at the garage first thing, no info about towing/collections so I guess we have to drive it there and hope for the best! Will have to check with our insurance I guess. We can’t get through to ask the garage if they can collect and appointment was sent by email. At the moment we’re so desperate for the car I just want the work done asap

I love the bike suggestions without any thought that for most people 10 miles each way is completely impossible! I’d a. be knackered, b. be sweaty c. not be wearing the right clothes c. I’d probably be in hospital within the week from being knocked over (there’s been 3 fatalities on my work route in 5 years of cyclists) and d. it’s too steep even for an e-bike going hence points a & b. Then also my car has air con and I need to fetch food for work as I run a community kitchen with limited storage so shop frequently. I’d love to take the bus but they cancelled the direct (every 2 hours) bus in 2020 and now it takes 1 hour 48 minutes according to time table, I drive it in under 15 minutes. If my car had to be offroaded i like many would have to quit - car companies must do better for those of us outside cities

My Citroen needs an MOT in a few weeks but I can't get it to an appointment and if I could it would fail on the recall.

It won’t fail an MOT for this. One option maybe to get it transported there and back for a small cost. Annoying but it would solve your parking issue.

OP - this article suggests that in France the government are requiring manufacturers to provide a replacement vehicle free of charge - I would be writing to my MP and asking why we are not doing the same. Manufacturers will get away with the minimum they can do in these situations. But agree regardless of how difficult this is for citron, they should not be leaving people without their cars for weeks, let alone months.

I do wonder if we all shouldn’t be writing to our MPs if this article is correct? Seems that its not only these makes and models that are affected, it doesn’t list them in the article but looks like France have issued orders on all pre 2011 cars that contain these airbags (and on pre and post 2011 cars in hotter areas which apparently make the bags more unstable). Given our climate is not dissimilar to northern France it’s worrying our government don’t appear to be doing the same. The.latest incident was just outside Paris.

It’s not really the same. If your car goes wrong you can get it fixed or sell it. Now everyone is just stuck with a dud car that is literally a timebomb that can go off in your face and kill you

@EssentialGarage what car do you have, you have to check the VIN on Citroen recall site (or Stellantis) to find out if it’s stop drive

Edited

Sorry I wasn't clear. Where I work we passed a Citroen today which should have a stop drive recall, but it didn't alert on the MOT system, it just said that there was a recall. As a garage we haven't been informed about this- I first found out on here.

Customer knew nothing about it, they won't put the details in to find out because they would rather take the risk- without a letter they would have no reasonable chance of finding out about it, and it has just passed the MOT .

Just wondered if when you put yours into the MOT checker if it just said recall rather than do not drive, because it will solve pp parking issues if they can get a MOT, even if they trailer it.

These are old cars now, and coudl have gone wrong for any reason. It'd be nice if they covered some costs, but I don't see that they have to

But this isn't a reason anyone could prevent. It isn't serviceable in the same way most items on a car are.

When I booked my Citroen in for the repair on Monday I was asked when my MOT was due as they told me it would fail it's MOT with the recall on it.

If she can manage £1000 an electric bike is a good stop gap.

Can you put your details into the gov MOT checker and screen shot if it says do not drive.

It just doesn't seem to work as it should.

My ebike gets me up a very steep 1 in 4 hill at high power. 10 miles on an e bike is like going round the block. There are often cycle routes that may not be the most direct but get you there safely.

Read the room. Seriously no wonder people hate cyclists, and those with a city centred view point.

Vast areas of the UK have no cycle lanes, no safe cycle routes.

MN goes batshit if you suggest buying your child a motorbike, but pedal bikes are just as dangerous in many areas.

The more powerful 'ebikes' are bloody dangerous, no need to wear a helmet or leathers, no insurance, checks, anything.

Doornon · 09/07/2025 21:02

Still bikes being recommended oh dear lord

@EssentialGarage that is bad! DD also had her car at a garage the day before re gassing her air con and they didn’t say anything either I am not sure a lot of places know.

this is what if says on the MOT page

This vehicle has an outstanding recall.
If you're the owner or driver of this vehicle, contact the local CITROEN dealership to arrange a free repair.
If the recalled component has been repaired recently, it can take several weeks for the manufacturer to update their records.
This information is provided by the vehicle manufacturer. If you think the recall information is wrong, contact your local CITROEN dealership.

doesn’t say stop drive no

So around 100 cyclist are killed each year on the roads and 1600 car drivers per year with 20k injured . . .

And therefore OPs daughter has to pull a bike out of her arse and cycle 20 miles a day as her commute… in the dark!

The do not drive order has invalidated my insurance so I couldn’t drive it to be repaired even if I ever got an appointment.
RAC are helping out. citroenrecall.rac.co.uk

Strangely, my insurer (Sheila’s Wheels) has told me I’m covered as long as it’s booked in.

Yes that's all we have- I've read through the VOSA stuff today, there is a bit about not issuing a MOT if there is a do not drive order, but it appears the MOT station would never be aware that the recall was 'DND'

How is this statistic meant to convince anyone that bikes are safer- ultimately it is a numbers game.

4forksache · 09/07/2025 23:23

Try ringing your local Jeep garage. They are owned by Citroen and may have contacts where you can get it fixed quicker.

4forksache · 09/07/2025 23:27

or rather they are both owned by the same parent company.

larkstar · 09/07/2025 23:35

Contact "Click mechanic" and ask them if they can carry out the repair - IME they have some very capable engineers working for them.

As PP suggested, check to see if you have legal cover with your car or home insurance and speak to them.

VOSA hasn’t existed for more than 10 years. DVSA have issued specific guidance to all testers that vehicles which fall under this will have a manual advisory added to the MOT stating that there’s an outstanding recall.

Yes cycling in the dark is really frightening.
