to believe Rachel Reeves was crying because

  1. she was upset when Lindsay Hoyle told her to keep her answers short

  2. she had an argument with Keir Starmer (possibly about her keeping her job, or about how to handle the inevitable questions about the new £5.5bn per annum black hole) just before PMQs

  3. Keir Starmer refused to say she would keep her job in front of the whole country. If he genuinely wanted her to stay, he would just say 'of course she's going to still be Chancellor' and that would be that.

  4. she is under immense pressure because she knows she will have soon to breach her fiscal rules, she knows she is responsible for many of the decisions that will lead to that, and she knows the how serious the consequences of her failure will be. We have seen recently (even just today) how vicious the bond market can be.

In short, I believe she was crying because of professional pressures (understandable ones, though largely of her own making, and about which I have little sympathy) and not nebulous 'personal' reasons.

If her parent or partner or child or grandparent or pet is ill the natural thing is to just say 'sorry, a close relative is in hospital and my emotions got the better of me'. Everybody would understand. You don't need huge reams of evidence but you need to give the bare bones of an explanation. She is trying to style it out but we can all see through it.

I will apologise if I'm wrong but long experience shows that 'personal reasons' almost always means 'I'm skiving or jobhunting' when a colleague in the workplace uses it to excuse their time off.

I believe it means even less when uttered by a politican.

No she’s not crashed the economy but the rich are going. No doubt about that. Many do pay their share and they are fed up with the constant attacks and others fleecing the system they put most into. London and the SE pays most in tax. Look at where pip payments are highest. It’s a way of life for some young people. RR knows the benefits are not sustainable. 1 in 10 people get them. She knows we cannot afford this but the backbenchers don’t care.

The rich are not going. Don't believe the spin of the Telegraph and The Express.

She wants to quit, desperately which is why she cried today. She does not want the job any more, & wants to be fired for crying. .

I took you seriously until this bit @Chintzcardboard. How can you possibly know?

She is free to quit if that is what she wants.

I’m not complaining about lack of empathy.

You just did. I quoted you.

Err no, read again.

NaySaidThe · 03/07/2025 10:11

This is incredibly weird logic, the tax rises are because of her.

That's what happens when you start trying to defend the indefensible. Complete logical failure.

Why was Rachel Reeves crying ?

Was it because her appalling budgeting attacking the disabled, schools, pensioners and employers has been hugely unpopular in the UK ? Apparently not.

Was it because her own party rebelled and rejected that budget ? Apparently not.

Was it because her own leader failed to support her ? Apparently not.

Was it because Kemi Badenoch was actually doing her job ? Yes. Of course it was.

bombastix · 03/07/2025 10:22

God, of all the things it might be attributed to, Kemi Badenoch is the last reason.

Anonymouseposter · 03/07/2025 10:23

EasternStandard · 03/07/2025 10:16

Reeves isn’t crying because Labour’s policies impact people. She cried because her own party are on the attack and she is stressed out by losing options.

I didn’t say why I thought she was crying because I don’t know and I do think someone in her position should control themselves publicly. She is indeed in the position of several politicians recently from all parties who have been brought down and check mated by factions within their own party. What I am saying is that only a very hard nosed person with a high degree of arrogance and self belief is going to feel comfortable in politics these days so that’s the type of leader many countries are getting and it’s not good.

Anonymouseposter · 03/07/2025 10:39

Thinking about women in politics I am remembering Theresa May’s experience. She didn’t actually cry but she looked terrible. Her own party tearing her apart, the press being personal etc. I didn’t agree with her policies but I thought she was genuine. The personalities that cope are “hasta la vista” Boris, smile and be a villain Blair , whistling Cameron and narcissists like Donald Trump. We’re getting the leaders we deserve.

Dwimmer · 03/07/2025 10:51

BIossomtoes · 03/07/2025 09:56

Empathy doesn’t pay the bills. Remember that when you’re tempted to complain about forthcoming tax rises. It’s a bit rich to complain about lack of empathy when you’ve shown none towards Reeves on this thread.

You can have empathy for her and still feel she must resign. If the job is beyond her then expecting her to stay in post is not showing her empathy.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 03/07/2025 10:56

Chintzcardboard · 03/07/2025 00:20

Cracking demonstration of faulty reasoning.

one could also say … with 5.5 years as an “economist” why would RR need to lie and announce it was 10 years??

OR,
RR is demonstrating that 5.5 years experience as an “economist” is TOO MUCH as others did the job better with no experience as an “economist”

She didn’t announce she had 10 years experience. It was picked up from her old linked in profile, something about ‘best part of a decade’. I have no issue with people criticising her for that in itself. But statements about her lacking experience and not being qualified for the role, are silly.

FatherFrosty · 03/07/2025 11:01

Oh god. Can we stop calling for resignations after 5 minutes in the job. It’s a shit job, made shitter by the hands they’ve been dealt.
just let someone stay in the job long enough to actually see something fucking through.

Locutus2000 · 03/07/2025 11:05

GoSteadyReady · 03/07/2025 06:38

So Rachel cries. Kemi Badenoch is worse than the worse. Not Cameron, Sunak, etc would be so bad as Kemi because Rachel has cried. The problem is not that Rachel has cried but that Kemi is a bad person for not giving sway to Rachel's tears.

So let's bash Kemi because the real problem here is her not thar Rachel lacks resilience under the pressure that is part and parcel of this job. When a white woman cries, look for a black or brown person to bear the brunt of it.

When a white woman cries, look for a black or brown person to bear the brunt of it.

Bit of a stretch there to be honest.

What other reason? She does not want to be sitting there. She wanted to be seen Failing, demonstrating to the world she can’t cope.

Its not what confident, capable people do. They assess situation and risk - they don’t sit down and cry Unless they given up.

She has given up and was told NO, you finish this mess you’ve made.

Locutus2000 · 03/07/2025 11:09

“it’s not what capable people do”
it’s what exasperated people do, it’s what humans do when they’ve been torn to shreds. It’s what people do when they’ve can’t fucking win whatever they try to do.

They are not going to… because they have already gone … RR cannot fill the gap in taxes resulting from their departures.
its not spin

its fact - personally know 9 who have left since Aug ‘24. whole businesses have moved because it’s cheaper to run a business from country that is helping you invest in their economy.
Their UK homes are empty … tax savings helps paying to be empty. Don’t sell because no one is buying. Stagnant housing.

If you could leave and save £250k a year plus. Would you? 5 years abroad and you have a million.

Britton pushing out high earners and replacing with multiples of unskilled, uneducated hoards who do not contribute to tax base and who do not have homes.

Franpie · 03/07/2025 11:19

I am so fucking mad that she was crying in the chamber. I have zero sympathy for her. She has played into the hands of all the sexist, misogynistic cunts out there who say women are too emotional for high pressured roles in the workplace.

If she had a personal issue that was upsetting her then she should have excused herself before entering. Either that or fucking hold it together.

with the years of chronic underfunding for every service we have. The massive profiteering of basic utilities from private companies whilst not investing or improving.
the huge debts we now have as a result of all of the above

how is that going to be fixed?

Sorry, entire very profitable business leaves uk office space empty and moves to Dubai because of a Brexit hangover when it’s been announced that it’s to pay less business taxes and employees pay less personal taxes?

UK economy not favorable for investment. Is any major company expanding INTO UK, other than whoever imports those noisy black scooters and employs the shifty guys driving them.

Agree
shd has done a lot of damage to perception of women in leadership. And her mutton-dressed-as-bovine communist mate Ange mean girl smirking.

A party with no cohesiveness, that’s clear.

The rich are not going. Don't believe the spin of the Telegraph and The Express.

Ha ha, even Labour agree they have and are going. We’ve lost more millionaires than Russia this year so far and they are in a war using conscription and under heavy economic sanctions.

Tens of thousands of millionaires have left, thousands of jobs have been lost, hundreds of businesses closed, around a hundred independent schools have closed (some have been around for over a hundred years), 13000 children have been forced out of their school and generational farms are looking their last generation. All as result of ideological spite policies.

chaosmaker · 03/07/2025 13:38

Expecting the rich to pay more is not 'ideological spite' - proportionately the poorest pay much more of their income out in taxes. Why do you think that is right?
