Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

Nadiya Hussain says she ‘won’t be grateful’ following BBC cooking show axe

Nadiya Hussain has spoken out following the cancellation of her BBC cooking show, delivering a powerful response to critics who told her to be “grateful”. The Great British Bake Off winner has enjoyed a 10-year relationship with the broadcaster followi...

Aren’t there some other factors here? Actually she wasn’t outspoken on Gaza for a long long long time when many other Muslims in public life were at some professional cost. I have seen many people calling her out on it.

She then did a cookbook on Ramadan and began to speak up about Gaza (maybe she had had enough of toeing the line) and it’s interesting that she lost followers and opportunities after that.

As an Asian person btw I found her recipes quite meh. Her baking was great, her cooking less so.

Equality means being subject to the same pressures as everyone else - in this case, being let go by the BBC because the ratings weren’t enough any more. It’s always about money in the media.

She HAS had a good run in her corner of the media world, which is constantly on the lookout for something new. In her case, the TV bosses at the time pounced upon a smiley, pleasant-looking brown woman with her head covered because it would have gone some way towards countering the criticism that all we see on our screens is people from the same part of society. So in that sense race/religion is an element here, but one which has worked in her favour.

She and her agent have been pretty smart with the rest of the media too. She’s had a lot of attention in magazines and features pages. Lots of stuff about her anxiety, not just her cooking.

She’s only going the way of scores of other TV cooks… that is, off to the satellite channels.

So should she be happy about tokenism as well as grateful that some powerful white person took a chance on an 'outsider'?

So it’s ok for Nadia to feel offended but not for others?

Totally double standards.

I don’t know how to answer this without insulting your intelligence, or lack of,so I’m bowing out. Wilful ignorance abounds. ‘‘Twas ever thus. Peace✌🏾

If I had a £1m a year job for doing something I found easy, and was made redundant after 10 years, I certainly wouldn’t expect people to feel sorry for me. I’d be gutted that the ride was over, but grateful I’d had the chance to experience it for so long.

This has F all about race, and more about the fact she’s made a shit ton of money doing something relatively easy, that most people don’t make £100 off, let alone what she’s earned.

Why do you so easily assume this has f all to do with race? Do you think if she were a white man so many people would be all over her DMs telling her to be grateful her show was cancelled? They’d probably just send commiserations. It’s because she’s a woman of colour everyone starts from the position she should be so grateful to have had any such opportunities in the first place!

All celebrities should be grateful though, most lack any substantial talent or skill to warrant their huge income.

I’m racist because I think telling someone to be grateful for having an easy ride to millions is perfectly acceptable in British culture?

Does this tactic usually work on people? Do you usually get them to silence themselves because of your false claims of racism?

Yes I think people old have made the same comments to anyone. For instance, If it were someone from Love Island can you imagine the vitriol they would have if they got a show out of it for ten years that got cancelled?

IPreferShoesToIssues · 29/06/2025 19:05

I liked Nadiya in her episode with Fred Sirieux on favourite places to eat but I wasn’t keen on her cooking.

As soon as I saw her put Wotsits in a Mac & cheese I stopped following her shows.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 29/06/2025 19:10

The BBC does seem to have run on a "jobs for life" basis for a lot of their talent. But those days, rightly in my opinion, seem over. She's very good at what she does but YouTube for example is chock full of very personable and entertaining people, including home cooks, also very good at what they do.

And!
If she’s so well versed in British culture, she will know that being told to be grateful for her millions is pretty reasonable take!

Molly Mae for example, was talking about how hard she’s had to work for her money and that other people are too lazy to do what she does, and she was absolutely dragged over hot coals for being ungrateful for the opportunities that she has been handed.

Who said she had to be grateful to Britain? Was that actually said or just assumed? Are people not meaning to be happy she got such a long career out of bake off? Since noone else has

No my dear, learn to read.

You're racist because you immediately assume a born-and-bred Brit's viewpoint is because there's a cultural clash (quoting you verbatim) and she doesn't understand British culture, the very culture she grew up in. Not because she's a human being with her own experiences and viewpoints, valid or not, and whether you agree or not.

But as my username references, I am wasting my time on the likes of you.

TBF all "British culture" is, is a series of parallel subcultures

@2dogsandabudgie @ExercicenformedeZ

Yes I used the wrong for the past tense.

It really isnt ridiculous lol. She spoke about it herself on her social media etc and blocked people in the thousands - also spoken about by her.

She has wound a lot of her early supporters up, from changing 'authentic' recipes to using untrue sob stories and various remarks etc. It really isnt some mad conspiracy lol

Yes they would. Anyone who has made a great living out of TV work should be grateful. Mary Berry frequently says how grateful she is - she even stayed with BBC after Bake Off went to Ch 4 to show her gratitude to the channel.
Everyone is saying 'be grateful' as not everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame', and 'not everyone gets given such backing and publicity'.

Bringing race into it - when we know the BBC have been discriminating against, for example, white middle aged men - is petty and ungrateful. I guess the viewing public must all be racist for not wanting to watch a recipe made with banana skins or her sprinkling cheesy puffs into her dishes. Maybe she needs to take a long hard look at why her show isn't watched.

I agree to be honest . That was my main thoughts about her dishes. That they were not healthy. We are at least all trying to be a bit more healthy these days aren’t we ? I don’t really want to be eating cheesecake with HPF in them.

I really like Nadiya and was pleased she established a career for herself after Bake Off. I think she's spoken eloquently on the challenges of living with severe anxiety and the obstacles she's faced in asserting herself as a muslim woman. I don't think she should be any more 'grateful' than anyone else who has managed to be successful in a competitive field where luck has played at least as much a role as talent and hard work.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 29/06/2025 19:46

What’s the first thing X factor contestants and GBBO contestants say when they’re given the boot?

“I’m just so grateful to have been given the opportunity in the first place”

Because it’s a cultural expectation. It’s not a racially charged expectation.

Bonsaibaby · 29/06/2025 19:48

‘grateful’ what like she was gifted a show? She’s worked bloody hard, broken down stereotypes and been brutally honest. It takes balls to do what she’s done so no, she shouldn’t be grateful for anything. She earned every penny. I’m looking forward to whatever she turns her hand to next.

Plenty of people work very hard, and aren't handed a BBC show on a plate, for cooking a few decent buns and cakes.

CanOfMangoTango · 29/06/2025 09:27

Why? She has a point?

It's the same shit she was expected to swallow as a kid with a smile on her face.

Like it or not race/religion are relevant.

She's a grown up, she's allowed to express her hurt if she wants and respond to people who think that she's making a big deal of it.

So according to you any ethic minority, once on TV, must never have their show cancelled ever.... cos racist?

Based on that TV/radio etc would, by now, never show any new talent as all slots will be taken by ethic minorities immediately using the racist card if anyone dares to stop their shows.

People get stale, she's had her run, accept it and quit with the racism card at every turn.

Nope. The poster quoted Nadiya accurately — that Nadiya feels a certain way about being told to be grateful because she was constantly told to be so as an immigrant.

You instantly took that to mean Nadiya — because she is not white — has misinterpreted and doesn't understand British culture.

Again, I gave an analogy earlier:

  • Woman: "It's sexist that I'm constantly told to be professional in the workplace when men aren't" (you can choose to agree or disagree; I personally agree with Nadiya)
  • Man: "It's a gender clash. It's perfectly normal for people at work to tell each other to be professional. You don't understand that because you're a woman." Tell me the man isn't sexist now.

But once more... Why am I wasting my time on the likes of you? Am really out of here.
