Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

Nadiya Hussain says she ‘won’t be grateful’ following BBC cooking show axe

Nadiya Hussain has spoken out following the cancellation of her BBC cooking show, delivering a powerful response to critics who told her to be “grateful”. The Great British Bake Off winner has enjoyed a 10-year relationship with the broadcaster followi...

it is frustrating

Have people actually said “you’re a brown person so you should be grateful for the opportunity”?

or just that she should be grateful for the opportunity to make a shit ton of money doing something she enjoys?

No. No one has said that. But pps are assuming a meaning that was never there so they can get all worked up about perceived racism.

I think, generally, we expect all celebrities and rich people to be grateful.

It’s sort of a basic expectation.

Akuna · 29/06/2025 16:33

God, the little bigots on here. The racism just seeps through your veins doesn't it.

Okay, so in this instance, racism doesn’t exist because you say it doesn’t. Got it👍🏾

I am white and j have also been told to be grateful. Hope that clears up any assumption that only brown skinned people have ever been told to be grateful.

Cool…and what tv shows have you headlined? Please let us know the titles of your publications? Or are you just some unknown, random, white person? In which case… What’s your point?

LadyKenya · 29/06/2025 09:30

I hear her, and understand what she is saying. Why should she be grateful?

Grateful I guess for being given the opportunity
and it was a good call by the BBC for years. Until it wasn’t so they axed it

mangoglow · 29/06/2025 16:50

I'm not sure what comment she was responding to, I suppose it is perfect natural to feel upset at losing a high profile bbc show. I liked Rachel Khoo and she had I think one show on the BBC with little Paris kitchen but once they had exhausted that gimmick they dropped her. She still writes and does shows for other channels but in the UK but BBC or C4 are the pinnacle of tv cooking shows I think and everything else is a bit of a come down.

I think Nadiya is fine, I'm not a huge fan of her recipes, I'm a keen cook and a book by her and found many of the recipes had to be adapted so as not to be sickening and I gave the book away. I prefer Anna Jones, Meera Sodha and Rukmini Iyer and would love to see one of these women get a cookery show.

Or alternatively, it does be cause you say so (with nothing tangible to prove it). Got it 👌

Exactly 😂 as I said upthread I don’t know why people are bringing up random people as examples. At least use an example of a white celebrity chef if you have one to back your argument or you simply don’t have one.

Yes imagine if every celeb who had a show axed posted such self indulgent twaddle. It's the nature of telly you're in then you're out. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Why am i bigoted because i don't buy into the rhetoric that everything bad that happens must be due to racism?

Oh, I see. There have been extensive pps talking about shiwing gratitude in many different circumstances as proof that racism exists.
But to prove it doesn't, I have to be able to replicate the exact circumstances under discussion? Got it 👍

Little bigots? Everyone has just pointed out that shows get cancelled, it's nothing personal and yes be grateful for 10yrs on tv.

If you think being on television elevates someone to importance, you are easily impressed.
Celebrity has never impressed me, not one jot.

"Or are you just some unknown, random, white person"
Read that back and consider how rude it is.

MarySueSaidBoo · 29/06/2025 17:07

I'd also add that in terms of baking, I'd agree with a PP who mentioned Instagram. I've become a huge fan of Jane's Pattisserie - never made a bad cake/cheesecake following her recipes, she goes through it all in simple stages and her website/books are brilliant. In fact, she's got 2 of my daughters into baking. No BBC show needed. Same with Becky Excell - her gluten free cup of tea website is brilliant and I've got 2 of her books for the two coeliac's in the family. People just look for cooking advice in other places to the TV these days.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/06/2025 17:09

So it looks as if we're not going to get any examples of shows being cancelled "all the time" because of racism and misogyny

Shame, because that sounded like something to be very concerned about and I'd have liked more details

It's absolutely fine to be rude to white people @Piggypigalle. We don't count.

Shocked and slightly amused at the poor reasoning here. Alright one more time now for the slow ones 🤡

Of course you need to use a like for like example!! That’s a basic part of proving your point.

For example if a very well known Black female celeb was singled out among a bunch of celebs and turned away from a celebrity club while her white peers were let in it’s pretty obvious that aside from some exceptional circumstances the likely explanation is racism. So then if a non-famous white person doesn't get in the same club and goes “see that shows it’s not racism against the black celebrity” 🤦🏽‍♀️ See how daft it sounds?

To even start to show it’s not racism, you would need to be comparing this Black female celebs treatment by club management, with that of fellow white celebs of a similar profile/status.

To be comparing an “ordinary Jane” to a celebrity in this context is ludicrous-
and the fact that so many are is probably indicative of their own prejudice.

It’s not about saying the celeb is superior but just acknowledging that it’s a different situation, in the club example I used the likely reason for the non-famous white person being barred from the club was they were not famous and this hypothetical club is for A-listers.

But the (hypothetical) black female was a celeb, so why wasn’t she admitted to the club with all her white famous mates?

Hmm…wonder why - Is it clicking now?!

I can’t work out if people are being deliberately obtuse here because this shouldn’t need to be explained over and over again.

I haven’t even looked into the Nadiyah thing beyond this thread and one article tbh so I don’t know too much of what’s been said to her, but white Jenny down the road being told to be grateful for her benefits or social housing doesn’t automatically disprove that ethnic minorities - at all levels- are told this specifically due to racism.

This thread started off well but looking at the last couple of pages it’s attracted a certain sort that can’t be reasoned with. Good luck to those bravely trying to explain basics to them - I’m out ✌🏽

Yeah, I said something similar above.

The 'celebrity chef' era is coming to an end. 'Veterans' like Jamie or Nigella still get shows, but I don't think even they draw the big audiences they used to. The idea of sitting down at 8 o'clock to spend an hour watching someone cook dishes you may not be interested in is a dated concept, when you have a whole world of recipes - with videos, nutritional info, different options etc - just minutes away on your phone or laptop.

When I got a fancy for chocolate cheesecake a few months ago, I just googled and instantly had a variety of different possibilities right there. Yes, watching someone cook things you might not have considered can be inspirational and interesting, but it doesn't have the appeal it had before the internet made searching for recipes so easy.

I'm glad you're out because you're extremely rude and patronising.

As has been mentioned above many times if you'd bothered to look, celebrity chefs - whatever the gender or ethnic and religious background - tend to have a short 'shelf line'. The Jamies and Nigellas are the exception. This show had been losing viewers so it's not surprising that BBC decided to call it a day after a decade. That's a shame for all involved, but the entertainment business is pretty brutal, especially as traditional TV is increasingly threatened by the streamers and the internet.

Not everything is about race. It just isn't.

Extravirginolive · 29/06/2025 17:24

Well this all bodes well for the future of a huge number of different ethnic nationality people living side by side on these little islands.

Exactly. It was a good run for those involved while it lasted. But people move on.

I think presenters can find it tough as the tv game can be. Sometimes you get a bts look at how they felt and they can feel used. It’s still something people want to do, but there are ups and downs.

Cormoransjacket · 29/06/2025 17:27

We love Nadiya in our house. She comes across as warm, funny and intelligent when she is on the television. I am particularly fond of her because watching endless repeats of the same few episodes of "Nadiya Bakes" has helped my very anxious son with ASD so much.

justasking111 · 29/06/2025 17:27

Still watch James Martin and Rick Stein occasionally but that's because they travel to different countries.
