and I know I've done a bloody stupid thing but - changing a wet nappy in public

I feel so stupid and I know I'm in the wrong but I changed DD nappy in the cafe area of a farm park today. It was 4.30 and there was no-one around, the nearest people were sitting 15 feet away and the baby changing station was occupied. I knew that it was just a wet one and that she had on dungarees so no part of her body or the used nappy would touch the table so I changed her.
A member of staff came up to me late and said that a doctor had seen me do it and he is going to report the park to the dept of health.
I know the staff member was freaked out but when I asked what this would mean she said they would probably get closed down.

I know its a bloody stupid thing to have done and I feel a complete mug but does anyone have any idea what's going to happen?
I figured the best scenario would be a get a snotty letter from park telling me off but the worst, well I have a vivid imagination and I'm thinking all kinds of stuff - does anyone have any ideas.

ps - yes I know it was a bloody stupid thing to do.

what a fuss about nothing. The farm is full of animals and I bet if you tested the table it would be covered in animal germs from all the kids who've petted them then touched the table. Ok, maybe you could have waited but nothings going to happen to you or the farm

Blueskythinker · 26/05/2008 22:50

Well I was changing my DS on a forest bench yesterday, who had poo coming out of his neck, and down his legs. I would like to have seen anyone who had the misfortune of approaching me to suggest a good place to do it

BumperliciousNeedsToSleep · 26/05/2008 22:53

It is a faff though, going to changing facilities, especially if you are on your own, and like, for example, at my local Waitrose cafe the baby changing room won't fit a pushchair in it

Or a while ago I had to change DD in the ticket office at the station as the changing facilities were closed.

Poor OP, you have had a fright, it perhaps wasn't the best place, but I hope nothing comes of it.

lazarou · 26/05/2008 22:58

Baby changing rooms can be really unpleasant places. They stink of shit, they're hot as hell, and the bins are usually overflowing. Oh, and there's never any paper towel to lay on the changing table.

Tbh, if I saw someone changing their baby on a table I wouldn't be in the slightest bit bothered.

messycow · 26/05/2008 23:23

I could have coped with you changing your child's nappy on your knee, but on the table is a bit bleurgh!

Nevertheless - it's done now, and I would be highly surprised if you will hear anything further about this. Try not to worry

megandtyler · 27/05/2008 00:03

crikey what a lot of fuss an ickle baby with a wet nappy can make
i used to work in a diy store and kids used to piss and shit in the display toilets all the time.sometimes parents would report it sometimes not.
i've changed a nappy on a pub table before now as they had no facilities. Had a travel mat with me though so no bare arse on the table.
Most tables will have had more germs on them than a nappy ever will.
don't fret boo

MrsThierryHenry · 27/05/2008 00:18

People do get into a fret, don't they? Surely a doctor (if he was a medical doctor, rather than a doctor in, say, colouring in or counting) ought to know that there are worse germs flying round a farm than any to be found in a baby's nappy? How many people at that cafe didn't wash their hands when they came out of the loos, for instance?

I've changed my DS on a train seat before - am always v careful and our changing mats have a waterproof backing so even though others may not know my hygiene standards, I know that I'm always v responsible about these things.

citylover · 28/05/2008 20:37

For a toddler surely you could change a wet nappy with them standing up.

I don't really have a problem with what the OP did. Think there has been complete overreaction in some quarters.

I had to change DS1 on a restuarant floor when he was about 8 months old - no other place to go.

And used to change the in the buggies when we were out.

People when you are out just love to cluck and disapprove don't they.

thenewmum · 04/06/2008 19:07

Was shopping in town today and had just discreetly finished bf. pfb then had to be changed, I was asked to leave the shop, am I wrong to be so mad? I then had to change her on the street.

niceglasses · 04/06/2008 19:24

You are all so much nicer than me.

I would have said ' Are you having a laugh, closed down?. Provide more than one changing table then and don't talk bollocks'.

Don't worry I'm sure you wont' hear another thing. Crazy.
