and I know I've done a bloody stupid thing but - changing a wet nappy in public

I feel so stupid and I know I'm in the wrong but I changed DD nappy in the cafe area of a farm park today. It was 4.30 and there was no-one around, the nearest people were sitting 15 feet away and the baby changing station was occupied. I knew that it was just a wet one and that she had on dungarees so no part of her body or the used nappy would touch the table so I changed her.
A member of staff came up to me late and said that a doctor had seen me do it and he is going to report the park to the dept of health.
I know the staff member was freaked out but when I asked what this would mean she said they would probably get closed down.

I know its a bloody stupid thing to have done and I feel a complete mug but does anyone have any idea what's going to happen?
I figured the best scenario would be a get a snotty letter from park telling me off but the worst, well I have a vivid imagination and I'm thinking all kinds of stuff - does anyone have any ideas.

ps - yes I know it was a bloody stupid thing to do.

Well that's how I read it F&Z

lulumama · 24/05/2008 18:19

bleargh at changing nappy on a table! i would not have given them my name and address though .

i don;t think the park will be closed down, as if they provide baby changing facilities, not their fault you didn't use them !!

booradley · 24/05/2008 18:20

I didn't think.
Now I'm like, why not take her into the ladies and lay her across the sinks, I've done that before.

I'm not going to defend my actions because I know I'm in the wrong but I just wanted to ask people what they thought.
I know I'm liable to think the worst and just wanted to know if people thought further action would be taken.

...and Dept of Health wouldn't be interested!

Maybe local council environmental health dept, but they'd probably visit, find the kitchen full of cockroaches/ rat droppings and shut it down for that reason, not the minor misdemeanour of one of their customers! A table can and should be wiped regularly, if they visit, they will find nothing on the table!

...would the council shut the place down if they "allowed" a customer to throw up all over a table?

No.

Chalk it up to experience and relax. It may be inadvisable not to use a cafe table to change your baby on, but there aren't any laws about it, I'm sure!

tassisssss · 24/05/2008 18:24

hey, don't beat yourself up over it.

we all do things that afterwards we realise weren't sensible

forget about it. doubt there'll be any repercussions at all and it's not like you'll be doing it again!

booradley · 24/05/2008 18:26

Its the book, I'll probaly hide more so now I've made such and ass of myself.

So it sounds like a snotty letter from park which is fair enough. As far as the worst, i don't know. the park end up witha huge fine that they try and sue me for and / or I end up being charged with indecent exposure?

I don't know what I was thinking. And yes I certainly won't do it again.

The member of staff is having you on. The Department of Health is nothing to do with this, and no doctor would think that it WAS the appropriate body to deal with any this. I think the member of staff is worrying about HIS job for not asking you to stop if somebody else complained. I very much doubt you will hear anything else from them. Calm down.

Oh blimey what an over reaction. I have no problem at all with what you did.
There are far more germs kicking around from adults not washing their hands after going to the toilet than from a babies wet nappy. For goodness sake the nappies have chemicals in to soak all the wee up, and as you say you didn't lie her butt naked on the table.
Don't feel stupid. You are not in trouble (it is not illegal for a start) and if the park are they will have to put signs up that is all.
I guess from the reaction here I would suggest not doing it again, and I am glad my two are out of nappies .

MerryMarigold · 24/05/2008 18:33

oh PURLEASE. the OP said she feels stupid so no point rubbing it in. i've changed ds's nappy 100's of times on my own table at home, so can quite easily see how you could do it when you're tired and on autopilot. as someone else said, a farm cafe - where people have been walking around a farm, and the gentle breeze of manure is wafting all over everything - is hardly like changing the child at the Ritz.

I'm sure nothing will come of it for you or the cafe. they were probably panicking, because some moaney old codger put the fear into them,.

booradley · 24/05/2008 18:44

Thank you one and all.
I know it was wrong and all, but I do feel less like the toilet police are going to be turning up at the door.
I'll have that wine now, thank you and good night.

mEMBER OF STAFF WANTS YOU TO STOP CHANGING CHILD'S BUM ON TABLE

She does not feel she has enough natural authority to come directly out and say "Stop changing your child's bum on my tables, it's not hygienic"

So she has made up a doctor to add weight to her words, and laid on some guilt about them being shut down because you are a mother and she knows it's one of your stongest driving forces - guilt.

She was lying to you to get you to do what she wanted.

let's not pretend that NOBODY else on this site has ever changed a child's bum on a table.

OP don't feel guilty.

SmugColditz · 24/05/2008 18:49

PS difference between God and a doctor?

God knows he's not a doctor.
