Best cat repellant for the garden?

cupcakessl · 28/06/2025 13:02

I have some time of work and I am tidying up the back garden.

The neighbours cats will come and play in our garden so I want to cat proof the garden for my toddlers so they don’t stand or pick up any cat poo.

I have looked on Amazon and have found mixed reviews.

Any suggestions welcome please xx

One of those motion detectors attached to a hose pipe, best thing ever. Even if the water doesn't hit them the noise of it startles them.

Move. We tried everything and sadly the only thing that worked was to move away. And for the 10000 times it was cat poo from my next door neighbour s cat as I saw him doing it. He never ever ever buried it and left it in the middle of the lawn so my poor daughter couldn't do cartwheels in her own garden. We moved away in the end as there was no other solution.

I’ve tried most of the above but will explore vinegar, lavender oil, male urine. My front garden honks of it plus I get poo on my hands when I pull up weeds and tidy borders. The cat is very determined (shits on holly leaves, defecates in between closely placed kebab sticks) and is stubborn.
Only netting keeps NDN’s cat out of the borders. Meanwhile the owner giggles about it not using its litter tray to poo before she lets it out super early. Drives me mad.
We look after dogs. Should we lob dog poo over the fence? Asking for a friend.

Your own cat...or a dog.

This won’t deter cats but may kill them!

How would a high pitched noise kill them? (Genuine question).

I am curious as to what you actually want cat owners to do?

Thank you for being curious. I am sure you can answer this question yourself.

Coffee grounds. Has been 3 weeks since NBNC has been in at my rockery.
*Nasty Bastard Neighbourhood Cats.
One cf crept past sleeping ddogs last night in the garden to attack our dcat!
We have 3 Lurchers!! Literally like inches away!

I think the poster was referring to the lilies. On this, I will have to disagree with her. Lilies seem very popular round here and we don’t find loads of dead cats.

Shade17 · 28/06/2025 18:03

A fast hunting dog whose raison d’êtra is killing small game. Cats don’t come anywhere near our garden.

AlicesMum2025 · 28/06/2025 18:05

We have a motion activated sprinkler. Never had a cat in the garden since. Means we don't have to try and catch them with a water pistol.

We're only have a problem with cats at night so we turn it on at dusk and off in the morning, that way none of us get sprayed. Doesn't hurt the cat just gives them an almighty fright.

We got ours from Amazon

(it's definitely not a fox because the cats trigger our doorbell camera)

cupcakessl · 28/06/2025 21:13

Hi thanks everyone
Some good ideas.

I will try the motion activated sprinkler first.

Eucalyptus oil - It’s worked a treat for me

Wherehas2023gone · 28/06/2025 21:30

We tried literally everything and eventually got our own cat which is the only thing that worked!

hilariousnamehere · 28/06/2025 21:32

Garlic will give them diarrhea but won't stop them doing it in your garden so I wouldn't advise that!

Lilies will kill them - you might not see it happen but they're lethal even if they just rub against one and ingest a little bit of pollen. Please don't plant them where you know cats roam even if the cats are annoying.

I have my own cats now but they stay in at night so we get occasional visitors headbutting the cat flap - water pistol or motion activated hose is the best thing ever, or in a pinch if you're quick just throw a jug of water in their direction. Won't hurt them and once soggy they are highly unlikely to come back, they hate it!

I’ve got a dog and that’s solved the problem in my back garden. The dog doesn’t go in the front though as it’s not fenced in and I’ve got cat sh*t in all my flower beds out front 🤦‍♀️

Same here

Cats are pretty tidy with their poo, will go somewhere private in the corner and fully bury it, are they even going in your garden?

i personally think it’s nice for your toddler to see the cat play and get to interact with it. It’s unlikely they will stand on or pick up cat poo but if you really don’t like it then I guess a water pistol

That's not true. I have one that poos in my Acer pot, it's really annoying. Sometimes it poos beside it too. And the reason I know this is because every time I go to water the pot there's loads of cat poo in it, visible. It's not doing the Acer much good I can tell you.

I'm thinking of using the crushed shell topping that might stop the cat with its sharp edges. Water pistol is no good because I don't generally see the cat doing it.

Loulouboho · 28/06/2025 22:34

Following. My neighbour’s cat is a nightmare. Regularly poos on a large table we have in garden, tries to eat fish from pond. Climbs in windows of our house if we leave them open. Poos in middle of lawn. It’s a massive thing and not at all bothered if you go to chase it away. Can’t stand it

I was coming on to say this. We tried everything, and this is the only thing that has worked.

cupcakessl · 28/06/2025 23:59

Hi
So for the motion activated sprinkler do I just leave it attached to the hose pipe?

Yes you do, but after a few days they get the message! Then we just leave it the garden unattached and that is enough of a deterrant!

abigxforyou · 29/06/2025 09:42

Yes it is attached to the hose pipe but only sprays water when it detects something. Note to self, remember you have it or you will get soaked. Grin

We have a splitter, if you look at the pictures it shows it being attached to the outdoor tap so you can feed 2 hosepipes. One is for the cat repellent and the other for any watering anything we need to. I agree that once they get the message you can remove the hosepipe and just the device is enough to deter them.

Hozelock Dual Tap Connector

Allows two hoses to be connected to a single tap. Independent water control valves for each outlet. Fits most standard garden taps.

  1. very high powered water gun
  2. rose cuttings…spread the thorny bits on the soil
  3. those wooden forks that come with M&S ready meals…dig the handle part into the soil & keep the prongs facing upwards
  4. a dog…especially a terrier or sight hound
  5. find out who’s cat it is and post the shit through their letter box…might encourage the owner to keep the cat indoors and have it shit in their kitchen instead of your garden
  6. if you know the owner…ask them to keep the cat indoors. If they continue let it out to shit in your garden you can contact the council & they can give the owner an asbo (maybe it’s the police, can’t remember if councils can give asbo’s)
  7. It’s illegal to cause suffering to the cat unless it’s causing harm to your livestock…so buy some chickens & next time the flea ridden creature is in your garden give it a bloody great boot up the arse.
Duckduck2 · 29/06/2025 09:58

We had this problem in our last house, i tried everything and yes we even had a dog who hated cats and would chase them out the garden but they were very very persistent.

We tried all cat deterrents bought ones and home made ones nothing worked, it did get me down was pleased when we moved as it wasn’t just one cat it was about 5/6.

That’s awful, what does your neighbour say about it?
