But really, these are people problems, not dog problems. Dog ownership has changed beyond all recognition, and that's not the fault of the dogs. They have, like people, become more high maintenance, with more needs.
In part this is down to the rise in designer crossbreeds, that are claimed to be hypoallergenic (which, in truth, no living creature ever can be). Nobody wants the naturally moulting breeds now, thus a high proportion of dogs need regular visits to the groomers to be clipped.
Dog walkers used to be a rarity. Most people walked their own dog or relied on friends and family. Now everyone wants a puppy, even people whose lifestyle is not suited to having one. Dogs are crated and left alone for long periods. Thus we have the rise in dog walkers, doggy daycare and behaviourists.
Social media has a lot to answer for with regard to lifestyle choices, for us and for our dogs. Dogs still want to be dogs. They really don't want or need to walk around shopping centres, or go the groomers every week and come out stinking of cologne. They don't need expensive subscription box foods with a high carbon footprint. They can still be well provided for without all this.
Really, all this is on us, as owners, and it's something we can work on.
