Iran attacking Quatar beginning to not get funny

Just that...

OP posts:

It was purely a face-saving gesture, not a real, escalatory attack.

Iran is in no position to fight a full scale war with the US and they are well aware of that. They have no air defence left. Israeli jets are controlling their airspace. Iran would be obliterated in any major confrontation with the US.

The Iranians needed to fire a few missiles at something belonging to the US so they could say they’d got their own back. They pre-warned the Americans so they could make sure nobody got hurt.

Trump has indicated that he sees the matter as settled. Israel and Iran will probably continue trading missiles for the next few weeks but the US’s direct involvement is almost certainly over.

Tg for that. The US part. I feel for both groups of people still in the midst of it.

Do you not get it . I am being serious. It's just not funny means not taken seriously. I am saying the opposite but maybe you need to learn the nuance of language .

What a patronising response. There’s no nuance in your original post, it’s full-on tasteless. Perhaps you should look up the word “nuance” in the dictionary. Oh and the first sentence of the response needs a question mark.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/06/2025 22:13

It’s literally all over every news station that it was prearranged as a face saving gesture for Iran.

And the whole not funny thing, it’s does not mean what you think it means, and even if it did, it’s a very inappropriate phrase to use given the circumstances, there’s so many better ones you could have chosen

Just that...

It was to be expected, they will send just enough missiles to cause some damage to save face that’s it, they can scream see we hit the great satan.

Iran knows it can’t face a full fledged war with the US so it’s a delicate balance of how can we respond so we can say we showed them but not enough to lead to retaliation from the US. Israel pretty much put them in control in under a week and the Us just demonstrated that they can reach Iran all the way from the US without detection. The B2 bombers flew 17 hours, dropped bombs for 25 mini and left before the Iranians knew what was going on.

Iran does not have the ability to strike the US homeland hence why they focus on nearby military bases in Iraq and Qatar.

We had the same when the US killed the Iranian General in 2020, they shouted and blustered revenge and then sent missiles that caused some damage to a US base but didn’t kill anyone and acted like they revenged his death.

It remains to be seen if Iran will be forced back to the negotiating table. They don’t really have many options tbh, they are running low on missiles, they know China or Russia will get into a war with the US for Iran, they are just not worth it, their terrorist groups that they sponsor are very weak right now and are staying out Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.

If public sentiments in Iran continue to turn against the regime they may fear being toppled and decide reaching a deal is the better or two bad options.

Iran retaliates for Gen. Soleimani's killing by firing missiles at U.S. forces in Iraq

There were no reports yet of casualties or damage at the two Iraqi military bases housing U.S. forces.

It’s all carefully orchestrated. Iran get to save face, USA go along with it.

Exactly, they know they have no chance against the Is and Israel at the same time but they need to try to bluster and save face.

dollius · 23/06/2025 22:37

Jennps · 23/06/2025 21:42

So Qatar is literally the official safe haven for Hamas. It’s where Hamas leaders live, sponsored by the Qatari government.

Qatar, and most of the Middle East, does not get on with Iran.

Isreal is attacking Iran for supporting Hamas and Hezbollah, while being friends with Qatar.

Qatar is a western ally, giving private jets and what not to Trump. Yet somehow it does matter that the entire Hamas infrastructure is run from Qatar.

Iran is attacking Qatar, where Hamas leaders live, remember.

And all is clear is as mud. Someone square that circle.

The whole thing is one big con to rip off taxpayers to fund wars. Follow the money.

This is nonsense

drivinmecrazy · 23/06/2025 22:54

Let’s be real.

trump is playing these games for profit, both politically and personal finance.
like he did with his tariff frenzy.
create a panicked market and buy low sell high.
he and Netanyahu are the only ones gaining any benefit from this conflict.
as it was as ever thus.

war is a game that the big people play with the little people’s lives.

No more. No less

Why do they need to save face? They're not the ones that started the fight.

Abhannmor · 24/06/2025 00:15

Trump says a total ceasefire will start within hours. So that's good . Unless he means he's bored with the middle East and is off to bomb China. Or both . Or neither. Who can tell with this raving old Dementor?

SpryUmberZebra · 24/06/2025 00:16

nomas · 23/06/2025 23:38

Why do they need to save face? They're not the ones that started the fight.

Depends on when you think the fight started, it sure didn’t start a few weeks ago, this has been going back and forth for decades now.

I can also pretend the fight started when Iran supported Hamas to invade and kill over a thousand Israelis last October and this attack is revenge but again the truth is this has been going on for ages with back and forth attacks.

And they need to save face because they are a dictatorship regime who need to appear strong so when I say they need to save face they need to be able to say we retaliated against the US attack by we all know it’s just symbolic.

Alright I am out. If it's not funny anymore in English means it's serious. It is an English idiom not to taken literally. If you don't understand that don't comment.

You really shouldn’t lecture others on English given the title of your thread. Setting aside the word ‘funny’, it’s so badly written that it makes no sense. “Beginning to not get . . …”

I knew what you meant. No offence was taken but some have obviously misunderstood your Britishness 🤣

MyLov · 24/06/2025 01:36

I am surprised that so many people really don’t understand that something “no longer being funny” is a phrase. It doesn’t mean that anything used to be humorous and it isn’t normally used in a flippant way. It can be used in full seriousness. I find it odd that so many people seem to have not heard it before.

And as for the thread police who are.telling the OP what she can and can’t start a.thread about and that she is stupid, well frankly it’s not up to you and it’s very rude to call the OP stupid. You seem stupid to me for not understanding a very normal, everyday phrase and judgemental for calling the OP stupid.

The OP has obviously started the thread as she is worried about recent developments. As are many people. Not everyone has to have a full understanding of Middle Eastern politics to post that they are concerned. If you feel that concern is unwarranted perhaps you could explain why and reassure rather than be rude and condescending and unhelpful.

The US are firing missiles into Iran from their military base in Qatar and Iran are retaliating. So, technically Iran isn't attacking Qatar but the US military base there.

They dropped bombs from bombers that flew from the US, not Qatar. However, the US base in Qatar is near to Iran so an obvious target for them

Hey @AmberKoala did you know you don’t have to post every of those wandering thought bubbles that float across the arid landscape of your mind. Funny isn’t it.

Oh @MyLov what a hypocrite you are. 😂

Oh @MyLov what a hypocrite you are. 😂

I don’t think anything about my post is hypocritical but either way I’d rather be a hypocrite than a bully. Telling people they can’t post a thread because they fibt know enough about a subject and calling them stupid is unpleasant bullying behaviour and I wanted to show the OP some support. If that makes me a hypocrite then so be it.

I agree. I fully understood what OP meant. ‘I’m not being funny’ is commonly used in my region (SE England). We don’t literally mean ‘ha ha funny’.

tripleginandtonic · 24/06/2025 07:27

Alright I am out. If it's not funny anymore in English means it's serious. It is an English idiom not to taken literally. If you don't understand that don't comment.

You're using it wrong though. Like if a kid has been squirting you with a little water gun and then picks up a hose and drenches you you'd say, stop that it's not funny any more. War and people being killed never was funny in the first place. AI has some work to do.

YourOnMute · 24/06/2025 10:44

I disagree. I have heard it used in a serious context conversationally, not on the news but in everyday speech, yes.
Sometimes using such a phrase outlines the ridiculous situation and seriousness.
