Just a small experiment. Not a marketing gimmick, but I will explain shortly, once a few people have answered. Or not answered!
If you are British born, can you answer these five questions without Googling or using any other materials for the answers?
(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping?
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne?
(3) How many local authorities are there in London?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I?
(5) What significant event took place in 1284?
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games?

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 22/06/2025 12:28

2!

FleurDeFleur · 22/06/2025 12:29

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 11:59

Yes, indeed. Can you answer them?

That's not the point
I am allowed to live here because I am a citizen.
I would certainly inform myself of another country's history and culture if I intended to live there.

parietal · 22/06/2025 12:29

1 Magellan
2). 12th July
3) no idea
4) Handel
5) union of England and Scotland
6) tanni grey Thompson

(most of those are guessing and I haven’t scrolled down to see what others said)

TimSamandLulu · 22/06/2025 12:29

I got Battle of the Boyne and Handel but no clue about the rest.

RentalWoesNotFun · 22/06/2025 12:30

Well I thought I had one right but no. Not sure how knowing all this crap helps anyone. I’d suggest my life has not been negatively affected by my lack of knowledge in this regard.

EileenBilton · 22/06/2025 12:30

British born and I can answer two. I did the German equivalent of this test and I don't recall it containing general knowledge questions like this. It focused on civics, government, day to day life and societal norms.

lemondropsandchimneytops · 22/06/2025 12:30

Battle of Boyne - 12 July for sure. Think it was 1690?

Only one I know!! Most of them completely irrelevant to life in the UK today and I'm sure government ministers wouldn't be able to answer alot of the test questions.

Purplebunnie · 22/06/2025 12:31

The first question doesn't quantify that it is a single handed achievement. I was thinking Francis Drake and no I didn't know the answer but I do now

FleurDeFleur · 22/06/2025 12:31

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 12:23

I didn't say I can't be bothered. I have the booklet. I am paying more.

I just thought this would be an amusing thread. Given all the other news is war war war war...

Ah, come on now. Not a wee dig at the British?

ScaryM0nster · 22/06/2025 12:31

Try making up naff rhymes (or filthy ones) for some of the dates.

eg. Fourteen hundred and ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Sounds good 👍

popcornpower2025 · 22/06/2025 12:33

None, maybe magna carta for 5

InWithThePlums · 22/06/2025 12:33

I knew Handel. Was two years out on the Boyne.

Usernumber12356 · 22/06/2025 12:33

1- Francis Drake? I know he was a sailor and sounds British?

4- Handel

The paralympian must be one of the cyclists who are married to each other but I can't remember which one. She's called Laura but I can't remember his name.

The rest i haven't a clue.

Now im going to go back and see everyone else's guesses

Brainstorm23 · 22/06/2025 12:33
  1. No idea
  2. 12th July 1690 (I'm from NI so it's etched in my brain).
  3. No clue. 30?
  4. Handel
  5. Not Magna Carta as that was 1215.
  6. Tanni Grey- Thompson or David Weir
PrimoPiatti · 22/06/2025 12:33

One correct and two almost.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 22/06/2025 12:33

I got 1. I did go and look at the test/ do a practice and you need to get 75% to pass and it’s a mix of questions. I got 19/24 so I’d pass. I’d assume with revision it’d be higher. Lots of questions v.easy for Brits thistle is a national flower of ? Which flag is not in Union Jack? The blitz was? type stuff alongside trickier (for me) questions

Annoyeddd · 22/06/2025 12:33

Can do number 3 and 4.
Doesn't have sensible questions like where to stand on tube escalator, how to get a milkman, bank opening times.

RedBeech · 22/06/2025 12:33

Without looking at any other replies or Google:

(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping?
By boat or air or on foot? Question is unclear. Not sure - Francis someone?
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne? - No idea
(3) How many local authorities are there in London? 33 boroughs - is that what LA means?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I? Handel
(5) What significant event took place in 1284?Was it changing over from one calendar to another which meant people thought they;d lost 11 days from their lives?
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games? I don't know. I don't follow sport. But 6 medals in 2 Olympics is impressive.

It's not about the impact on your life. Every country does this, it's to ensure that, for new citizens, there is familiarity with the adoptive nation's history, culture and general mores.

Myrobalanna · 22/06/2025 12:34

I got Handel, and thought Magna Carta for 1284 but that's based on vibes not knowledge.
Sorry people have to jump through this ridiculous hoop.

SomewhereInMyHeart · 22/06/2025 12:34

Number 2 - Trainspotting 2 is a clue 😂

SemperIdem · 22/06/2025 12:34

I’ve looked at the citizenship tests before. Generally speaking I could pass one with ease. I would say though that it is odd to me how much the questions can vary, but perhaps some are more/less obscure to me as a born British citizen, than they would be to someone newly obtaining citizenship.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/06/2025 12:34

1 fuck knows
2 fuck knows
3 fuck knows
4 fuck knows
5 fuck knows
6 fuck knows

my husband jokes he is more british than i am because he had to pass a test and I didn't

Fairislesweater · 22/06/2025 12:35

I knew none of these, but I do know when the Magna Carta was signed, this is largely down to Lisa Simpson’s helpful song… 🎶 in 1215 at Runnymede, doodah, doodah….
