To hate mixed sex toilets?

We have them at work. They are the only kind....no female toilets option.

Single fully enclosed cubicles in a row. They are claustrophobic & can be very smelly. I actually don't feel they are all that safe; what if somebody was taken ill & fainted in one? Nobody would know.....at least in ladies toilets there is a gap at the top/bottom and people coming and going, that just feels a lot safer to me.

I don't know why I mind when I am going to the loo and see a man coming in/out of a cubicle but I do. The toilets do get dirty & smelly because many people don't clean up after themselves properly, I am sure they are worse than ladies' ones.

I don't know why it is a thing for so many people to try to force/rattle the door when not sure whether a cubicle is occupied, risking breaking the (flimsy, often broken) locks - I am sure it is worse too than in ladies' toilets. What is wrong with knocking, or gently trying the door? Why would people not be specially conscious of not invading others' privacy in mixed loos? And of course in a mixed toilet there is a risk here of a bloke bursting in when you are on the toilet.

I am realising that I am actually trying to avoid needing to go to the loo at work. By not drinking too much water (even in this hot weather) or holding on until I get home. This is all new to me to feel this way, but I would feel awkward to complain, wouldn't know how to present the complaint, and don't know if I would be taken seriously or labelled as a troublemaker.

YANBU. Most people hate them. But apparently society has to pander to a special group of men who won’t let women have anything for themselves.

skippy67 · 21/06/2025 09:44

We have them in our workplace. I think they're great! There are about 15 cubicles on each floor though, so lots of choice. They're also cleaned regularly throughout the day. So yeah, I really like them.

PollyBell · 21/06/2025 09:47

I cant speak for any other female but I am yet to go into a nice smelling clean female only toilet set up

What do you like about them specifically that would be an improvement over normal single sex toilets?

TheChosenTwo · 21/06/2025 09:49

I hate them purely because there is always a little drop or two of wee on the floor.
We have them at work, it’s the only thing that I dislike about them - women tend not to get wee on the floor.

Different poster but we also have them at work and I really like them because a) they’re fully enclosed so you don’t feel like everyone can hear you weeing and b) each cubicle has its own sink. They’re really convenient for when you’re on your period, especially if you end up having a bit of a bloodbath and don’t want to emerge in front of other people like Lady Macbeth.

LezUlez · 21/06/2025 09:55

I've used them when visiting another office in the City. They are nice. Absolutely fine. I'm happy to have an enclosed area and a private sink to use.

I like the privacy of the fully enclosed cubicles. The "normal" single sex toilets we had before had a shared sink and mirror set up. The loos we have now have a sink, mirror, San pro all in the cubicle. Which personally, I prefer.

Fair enough. At least one positive for women. How much nicer if we didn’t have to deal with men using them too - pissing over the floor, not flushing and leaving the seat up (which is my experience).

thischarmimgwoman · 21/06/2025 10:02

I don’t like them. We have them at work - hate the thought of having a male in such close proximity when you’re vulnerable. However, it seems that the men aren’t keen either and walk some distance to use loos in another part of the building.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/06/2025 10:02

YANBU. I hate them too.

greengreyblue · 21/06/2025 10:04

Me too. It’s quite unnerving to come out of a cubicle and face a man in very close proximity with nobody else around.

greengreyblue · 21/06/2025 10:05

Though last week I was in one in a restaurant and it was slightly better as doors and walls were floor to ceiling and there was a tiny hand basin and drier was in each cubicle so no hanging around.

Mokel · 21/06/2025 10:10

The ladies are just as bad as men. For example, I often find toilets with a poo not flushed. Don't say that the flush is broken/playing up as I have used the same toilets in the past and no issue with the flush.

Why don't women flush after doing a poo FFS?

Edited

I think that is the kind OP is complaining about. I personally prefer them; I had an ablation years ago so I don't get my period anymore, but when I did being able to wash my hands (and rinse my cup, which was the only way to deal with Noah's flood) in the cubicle was a real boon. These only work if the doors are absolutely floor to ceiling, the locks work (and clearly show when a cubicle is occupied) and they are cleaned regularly though. Any public use toilet that isn't cleaned regularly is grim, though.

Andoutcomethewolves · 21/06/2025 10:11

I don't mind them when fully enclosed with a sink, mirror etc. I actually prefer it to having to sort hair etc and wash with other people next to me even if women! And much easier for periods etc.

I really DID mind a while back when our local comedy club decided to turn all of its (not fully enclosed, just a row of normal small toilet cubicles) into mixed sex and as I went in the very first cubicle door was wide open with some swaying drunk bloke pissing with his arse out. It felt deliberately exhibitionist, like every woman who comes in now needs to pass by me and my naked pissing penis and hairy arse 🤢

Papering · 21/06/2025 10:12

YANBU. I work for a large civil service organisation. I previously worked in an office which exclusively had these toilets. I often found them dirty and they are not totally sound proof. I really found that awkward.

A colleague was sacked for allegedly spending hours in the toilet and masturbating. He was apparently audible and boasted about it!

I moved jobs and now work in an office with separate men and women’s toilets. It also has a small number of separate toilets that can be used by males or females which are quite large and have a sink. Also totally sound proof.

I am sorry but on the whole I found the mixed sex toilets dirty with poo stains in the bowl and wee on the floor and the seats. Despite regular cleaning.

SaintNoMountainHighEnough · 21/06/2025 10:12

As a man. I hate them. We have a set at our school and I cannot.... I just cannot. I use the disabled loo next door instead.

Scimitarsandstars · 21/06/2025 10:15

Hate them too. And yes you're right about the safety issue - where do people go they are not feeling well? The toilet - so someone could faint/have a seizure in a fully enclosed toilet and it would take much longer for anyone else to realise.

EndorsingPRActice · 21/06/2025 10:17

We have single sex and mixed available, so I am very lucky. My desk isn't far from the mixed ones. Nearly everyone (F and M) choses to walk further, or in the M's case go upstairs, to use the single sex ones. They are all well maintained and pleasant to use. But it is clear that people, at least in my office, a good mix of the sexes and ages, generally prefer single sex.

Floor to ceiling doors in loos are dangerous. It is common for people to collapse in loos, and they can’t be spotted if the door goes to the floor. They also feel more risky in terms of being pulled into one. In loos with gaps cameras are more easily slid underneath though, obviously much more of a risk in mixed sex facilities.
I really hate mixed sex loos. Hopefully with the SC clarification they will be phased out. Women don’t like them, most men don’t like them either.

Harassedevictee · 21/06/2025 10:43

I support mixed sex/unisex toilets as an addition to single sex toilets and not instead of

Single sex cubicles are safer as you can see if someone has collapsed etc.

Mixed sex/unisex toilets as an addition solve the problem for non-binary and trans people.

Berlinlover · 21/06/2025 10:46

I absolutely hate them but that’s the way the world has gone unfortunately.

lifeturnsonadime · 21/06/2025 10:48

I hate them too. Some men leave the seat up where I work. so I have to start by touching the toilet seat.

The sinks are not in the enclosed spaces either.

It's really grim.

It doesn't benefit women.

It's also more dangerous than toilets that can be accessed from the outside.
