that my child was "burned to death" at school

My son is in year 7 at a secondary school. He came home all upset this evening as apprently they had their half termly fire drill.
Part of this is to hide various staff and children around the school to encourage vigilance.
My son was delighted to be selected. Apart from the fact that no on found him till the lesson after the drill when someone heard him scratching at the cupboard door.

Apparently all five other hiders had been accounted for.
Is this nromal? What shall my next step be?

was he LOCKED IN the cupboard unable to get out?

I would be most concerned about that part
they obviously also need to brush up on their fire drills
I would start by asking for appointment to see the person responsible for the fire drill and ask for an explanation of the whole thing

Shock
angrymum1 · 23/05/2008 17:37

i don't know the precise details. I don't think he wanted to hop out in case they were still looking.

I think that the school will now have to produce a written risk assessment based on the incident, and I am pretty sure that you are within your rights to ask to see a copy.

It seems bizarre that they should have gone to the trouble of setting up this scenario, which seems a useful way of making sure that the registers are being taken properly etc, and then to have not checked that all of the children were safe/accounted for.

However, a quiet word with the form teacher/Head might reassure you.

pointydog · 23/05/2008 17:47

You must know if he was locked in. I really can't imagine that he was.

S1ur · 23/05/2008 18:39

O M G who thought of this bizarre scheme? Alan Partridge?

cornsilk · 23/05/2008 18:41

I worked in a school once where a head did that to me. (Took a child out of the line on the way out without me knowing!)It really made me think. I always check the class very carefully now when we have a fire drill.

It does sound like a good way to get people to take fire drill seriously: if there ever is a fire, one of the things that is very important is accounting for all the people who were in the building (ie they shold all line up and be headcounted) so the firefighters can be told whether or not there might be anyone left inside.
But it sounds like they made a bollocks of it and need to tighten up.

FannyGropey · 23/05/2008 18:46

I know I shouldn't but ROFL

angrymum1 · 23/05/2008 19:29

Do they ever find kids in stock cupboards?

My son said he found a jar pickled onions in there. Teachers are so odd.

OP posts:
guitar · 23/05/2008 19:34

what does he was just "of" mean if ROFL means rolling on the floor lauhging?

made me snigger too - but you should talk to school about their fire dirlls as obviously not effective

pointydog · 23/05/2008 19:34

How many minutes/hours was he in the cupboard? Did he not feel he could come out?

You still haven't confirmed that he wasn't actually locked in.

angrymum1 · 23/05/2008 19:36

Well I think he knows the complete inventory of sugar paper. They won't need to stock take this year.
