To tell my neighbour to sod off next time she comments on my garden

My neighbour has a habit of popping her head over the fence and commenting on my garden. Nothing overly nasty, but I did say to her one time that I don't particularly enjoy gardening and she said "yeah, we can tell". Hmm

It's not a big garden but I work long hours and it's just not high on my priorities during the week. My neighbour is retired.

I had the week off this week and I've busted ass getting all the weeds up, driveway spotless, grass cut. I was feeling very pleased with myself.

Well today, a whole team of gardeners has shown up and are blitzing her garden while she's sitting drinking rosé and chatting with her friend!!!

WIBU to tell her to sod off next time she pops her head over and says "ooo your grass needs cut", because she doesn't even do her own bloody gardening!!!

This thread is lighthearted before anyone jumps in. I don't actually care whether she does her own garden or not! (I'm actually very jealous Grin)

I've just got home and went back out into my garden. They must have been waiting for my door to open because neighbours friend immediately jumped up onto the bench and said "I've got a set of long-reach trimmers. Do you want me to do your hedge for you?"

I said "I'm actually trying to let it grow. You know, for privacy!!"

He just nodded and jumped back down again and muttered something to neighbour. Unbelievable.

@SoopriseSooprise LOVE your response OP. They really are tone deaf! 🙄

You could always say that you can take pride in what you have done knowing you did it yourself.

I hate nosey fuckers.. I just can't get my head round why some people are so nosey. It's your garden you do what you want. My neighbours can't understand why I have lots of grass and no shed, they have pavers, fake grass, sheds the size of a house, I like grass and sheds are spider houses that encourage hoarding . I've really got to the point that I feel saying "Fuck off" is the only way.

You could tell him, if he asks again, that you do not cut trees and shrubs in the nesting season and see his response to that.

If he cuts his, it is against the law. You have to prove there really are NO birds nesting, and that isn't easy.

Brilliant response Grin

It's a 7ft high fence! She's pushed a bench against it so that she can step up and pop her head over.

Oh my goodness. I would be tempted to poke her with a stick, nosey so & so.

I have a neighbour like this - comments on our hedge A LOT. He's a twat. Thankfully quite a few other neighbours also think he's a twat.

We're the only house on the road with 2DC and both of us work full time. The garden is at the bottom of our to do list.

I agree. Let it grow - weeds and all. Tell those who criticise that you are growing a wild garden so that the birds have lots of insects to feed on, and the bees need the nectar.

It is a fact that the bedding plants people grow for colour are grown in cultures and not suitable for the pollen the bees need. Perennials and wild flowers have the pollen bees need.

The Chelsea Flower Show is full of wild gardens and the BBC encourages them.

You are providing the birds and bees with a running buffet.

In your shoes, I'd tell her that I'm planning on taking up gardening once retired.

The bit of 'gardening' I would prioritise is privacy so maybe consider planting along that fence boundary so she can no longer see/comment.

Yes I’m going to take up gardening when I retire. In the meantime we are looking at raising the fence to give us a bit more privacy and then do so - nailing trellis along the top or whatever

Well, you try getting a co-codomol scrip out of your GP. Maybe they're growing their own opiates.

I did once have two police and a cid guy round,. As they were leaving I did a sweeping hand gesture and say "do you like my poppy field ?"

They were at the seed head stage and cover about 30ft x 10ft area, looked ery suss

IdiottoGoa · 20/06/2025 19:40

My son in law commented on long our weeds were after DH suffered serious injuries in an accident and I was working full time as well as looking after two kids with SEND.

Not a single offer of help from any of the grown up kids.

Fucker

I'm proud to say I'm retired, hate gardening and couldn't careless what anyone else does with their garden.

Plant some berberis against your side of the fence. Pretty berries and lots of lovely thorns!

ElizaMulvil · 20/06/2025 20:29

Explain that you've just done 'No Mow May" to have environmentally friendly garden for bees and butterflies which are in crisis.

Now into 'let it bloom June', so won't be cutting grass (or maybe a short path to the compost heap ?) Also keeping the wild flowers (aka weeds) for their pollen as above.

Smile and suggest they do the same!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 20/06/2025 20:48

Just say you're waiting until you move to a nice house in a classy area before doing up your garden. You'd rather not waste money trying to make a silk purse about of a sow's ear neighbourhood....

LadyLindaT · 20/06/2025 20:51

I was wondering if I should start to keep pigs.....

If anyone is accused of growing poppies or some other suspicious looking plant (some hellebores look like cannabis from a distance) tell them you want a DNA test done on what they think is suspicious.
