For not wearing summer shorts

im 40 and have reasonably nice legs although not very long as im only 5 foot 3, but I literally live in summer dresses as opposed to shorts and a strappy top. Am I the only one who does this?

sometimes I feel a bit frumpy and mumsy (I an
a mum also lol) but then my belly isn’t small and dresses cover it up.

in my 20s and early 30s I was always showing off my good figure in next to nothing lol

I am 45. I have never seen anybody in their 40s in shorts, except hiking or on the beach. And shorts never look good on anyone, unless your name is Daisy Duke.

Who are all of these school run mums in shorts?? All the mums on my school run have come straight from work… definitely not in shorts.

I feel shorts should never be worn in adulthood by anyone of any age, sex, or body type, unless actually engaging in some form of athletic activity.

Agree! Didn’t wear them when I was 16 and weighed 7st, wouldn’t wear them now. Other people can if they want to, but OP is definitely not alone in not liking them.

Even DS8 is refusing to wear school shorts because it apparently isn’t cool (he’s happy to wear jersey shorts at the weekend).

I wouldn’t be without my shorts. I have many styles, and I look forward to the warmer months so I can get them on. Aged 58 and luckily still very trim. My DH in his builder shorts, let’s just say, it keeps that spark alive. 😉

Most mums are wearing shorts and strappy tops at my kids school, or summer dresses

Why would not wearing shorts be unreasonable? If you don’t want to wear them, don’t wear them.

Lemmywise · 21/06/2025 11:45

I like shorts for practical reasons as I do a lot of walking and working out and they are best for this activity. A skirt would not suit this. I do like to look nice but most of the time I am going for comfort and practicalities

I am in my 40’s and own about 10 pairs of shorts, plenty of women do, but it’s a choice. Why would you think shorts means daisy dukes? There are so many styles and options. Shorts do not mean your ass is hanging out

I have walked past a few women lately in the heat covering themselves in leggings and looking self conscious and I really empathise as I used to feel this way, as I am older I now don’t give a shit what someone else thinks about how I look. I wish more women would gain confidence to just wear whatever the hell they like. I wasted so many years afraid to wear shorts

none of us are perfect and life is short, wear what’s best for you. No one is looking at your imperfections usually we are only thinking of our own!

I’ve just given in to Facebook advertising and bought some of those Halara shorts you always see. They are weird material but soooo comfy! I have short ones for running/the gym and longer ones for the rest of the time. They are great!

I don’t wear shorts, trousers or jeans - I wear leggings for the gym - but that's it - skirts and dresses all year round!
