For not wearing summer shorts

anxioussmess · 19/06/2025 10:26

im 40 and have reasonably nice legs although not very long as im only 5 foot 3, but I literally live in summer dresses as opposed to shorts and a strappy top. Am I the only one who does this?

sometimes I feel a bit frumpy and mumsy (I an
a mum also lol) but then my belly isn’t small and dresses cover it up.

in my 20s and early 30s I was always showing off my good figure in next to nothing lol

I only wear shorts on holiday sometimes. Shorts just don’t suit me, they didn’t even when I was young and slim! I just look better and am more comfortable in dresses or skirts, or loose summer trousers.

Usernameisunavailable · 19/06/2025 15:33

My legs are my best feature, so I’m flashing them in shorts whenever the sun shines! Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, but don’t be afraid to wear shorts just because you’ve turned 40!

Dweetfidilove · 19/06/2025 15:40

I love the freedom of a nice floaty summer dress, but I must take the shorts for a spin every so often. If anyone doesn't want to see my legs, they can close their eyes 🤷🏾‍♀️.

LindorDoubleChoc · 19/06/2025 15:45

YABU. It should be compulsory to wear shorts when the temperature gets above 23 degrees. Anyone caught wearing trousers, a skirt or a dress should be given an on the spot £1000 fine and made to do 100 hours of community service. I would happily volunteer to be part of any organisation keeping the streets free from these wholly unreasonable gangs of shorts refuseniks.

cheesycheesy · 19/06/2025 15:46

I never wear shorts. Really unflattering on me

Dontlletmedownbruce · 19/06/2025 15:46

@BexAubs20 it's worth investing in some long underwear for under dresses. I avoided dresses for years cos of chub rub. Then I wore cycling shorts but some were hot and felt heavy. Only two years ago I got long john type underwear, I'm not sure what it's called but its really light and it's a game changer. I feel so much lighter and happier in the summer since buying them.

YANBU

Devilsmommy · 19/06/2025 16:02

I own 1 pair of boyfriend shorts which very rarely get worn. I wear 3/4 linen trousers when it's hot. They're nice and light and only the very bottom of leg is showing. I'd love to be confident enough to wear long floaty dresses but just don't feel I look right on them somehow. I'm 5"7

reversegear · 19/06/2025 16:05

I’m 5’2 and shorts just look awful on me, they chop me in half short how short my legs are. I have good toned legs but I feel way more comfy in skirts and dresses.

Not just me then which is good to know

I guess I see lots of school mums looking trendy in their shorts and fun tops and I feel a bit frumpy in comparison

If you feel frumpy then I think it is worth a change to boost your confidence. You could try a shirt dress in a cool cotton. Choose one above the knee to let your legs out, slightly fitted with no belt is flattering to the tum.

anxioussmess · 19/06/2025 19:13

Soooo many replies.. thank u.. I do tend to wear dresses a lot. Even in winter I wear them with tights and boots. I guess I shouldn’t worry what I wear as long as I feel confident in it which mostly I do

I never wear shorts or dresses. The closest I'll get to shorts is 3/4 length leggings, and only once in a blue moon when I've actually bothered shaving. I'm in my 30's .

Alconleigh · 19/06/2025 21:41

I’ve got very slim legs and I look like a nine year old boy in shorts. A really wizened one. Dresses all the way!

Neolara · 19/06/2025 21:48

I never wear dresses and wear shorts a lot when it's hot. I'm 56 and was contemplating earlier today that I will probably be wearing shorts into my 70s which I imagine is not that usual. Tragically, I have very average legs so it's not about showing them off. I just like shorts

LegoHouse274 · 19/06/2025 21:50

I wear shorts a lot in the summer but I know plenty of people who never do. It's just personal preference and comfort isn't it. I really don't care what other people wear and doubt anyone particularly notices what I wear likewise.

EveInEden · 19/06/2025 21:53

Where I am, I see more shorts than dresses. I wear both, although prefer shorts. I think they look fine on both men and women and never understood this whole 'difficult to pull off' for a perfectly normal piece of clothing.

user1471554720 · 19/06/2025 21:58

I wear shorts, coming to mid thigh, and a t shirt when wfh and on holiday. I am 52, 5ft 3 and pale. My legs tan a little, when I wear shorts in the garden, and out running.

When going to the shops etc at home, I wear three quarter length trousers (I don't know the correct name). I rarely wear dresses, unless on an evening out on holiday. I want to get a light tan on my legs. They will stay white if I wear long dresses all the time. Also, as I am so short, it is hard to get long floaty dresses which are above my ankle.

I still wear them and I’m 66!

UnderFloorboards · 20/06/2025 05:37

I am the same body type as you and never wear shorts. I wear tops and long cotton skirts. I feel and look pretty good. Am in my 50s and am in no way frumpy. I don’t like how shorts look or feel on me. It’s not compulsory!

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 20/06/2025 06:09

What a weird thing to be hung up about?! I have good legs but requisite - if an informal dress code - is comfort! Airy, long, loose fit Cotton dresses are more my thing. Plus easy to wash and go if away; dress up with accessories if that bothered! However, if hot, sweaty and dealing with limpet like damp fractious kids least of considerations would be to aspire to be Boden mum!

What do you mean even in winter? Where are you getting that dresses aren't all year round garments?

What's the reason for your unusual views on clothing?

Yabu and this is the reason no shops ever stock any summer dresses because nobody ever wears them.

There are loads of summer dresses around, I own lots of them.

feelingbleh · 20/06/2025 21:54

I live in shorts and tshirts i only own 1 summer dress

minnienono · 20/06/2025 21:56

I see more dresses than shorts myself. I think of shorts as being scruffy myself, much prefer dresses

Tbry24 · 20/06/2025 22:10

I’d never worn shorts until a couple of years ago and got a pair for gardening. I always think they look awful on everyone but now I’m 50 I don’t care anymore what anyone else thinks.
