Walking my cavapoo today in a big open and empty field. He trots along happily off the lead, if he comes across another dog he will go and give them a sniff and be on his way.

usually if I see another dog on a lead I will put him on a lead too. I didn’t see this woman soon enough as she appeared from behind a bush. Big gnarly dog on a lead XL bully type dog. My dogs starts trotting in her direction, she goes mental shouting “go away, this is a dangerous dog, get your fucking dig away” etc. I called Doggo over and put him on a lead, no drama. She is still mouthing off at me, to which I replied “all right calm down!” This set the mad woman off shouting that I’m a fucking idiot and her dog would rip mine to bits and I shouldn’t let him off the lead. To which I replied “you’re the one with the aggressive dog you can’t control, who is the real idiot here?” I then got called a butch and a c£&t!

Now is it me that is a c£&t? Or the person with a massive aggressive dog that was literally pulling her along??

Maybe get a dog that isn’t aggressive and that you can control. Problem solved!

Doesn’t sound like you’re in control of your dog, either.

Reminds me if the man I encountered in a park earlier this week. Went batshit at me because as I was holding open the gate to the park for my children to go through his dog, that wasn’t on a lead, legged it between us and out through the gate. Have your dog on a lead if you can’t stop them running off!

yesIknowbut · 18/06/2025 22:24

Dogs are social creatures, like humans (used to be).
They will want to meet other dogs.
If your dog will"rip your dog apart " maybe think about a muzzle or getting your dog PTS.

Here we have pages and pages of people saying the same thing in slightly different ways!! Boring, or what? I see this on a lot of posts now. Someone makes a comment, someone else replies, then the rest of the world comes on and expresses exactly the same sentiment but with slightly different phrases. What is the point?

I wondered how long it would be before someone came up with that enlightening piece of advice! Well done!

TheWalkingEyebag · 18/06/2025 22:29

A c*, no, but you were unreasonable. It doesn’t matter if they are the friendliest dog around, there are people who are scared of dogs and dogs who are fabulous with humans, but dog-reactive. All of whom have just as much right to be in that space as you. That woman should be allowed to walk her dog in a public space without fear of running into an off-lead dog. You have no idea what training she’s currently doing with the dog or if it even belongs to her - perhaps she was walking it for a friend as a favour and wasn’t confident in how it might behave around your dog.

It’s great that your dog has good recall, but you can’t see around corners, through walls, or through bushes. Some people or dogs are scared of other dogs on sight and it can ruin the whole walk.

Finally, we also had a dog who was incredibly friendly, until he wasn’t. One day, he just snapped, as the result of an undiagnosed brain condition, and became very reactive. A dog is an animal with instincts and impulsive, and you simply cannot predict their behaviour. Just because they’re an angel one day, it doesn’t mean it will be the next.

I started thinking you were not being unreasonable, I ended concluding you are a cunt. This was based on your response to anyone who disagreed with you.

Anyone who lets their dog go up to other people's dogs is in the wrong.

Except it wasn't a big open empty field was it OP? It's a field full of nature. Presuming you're in the UK, it's ground nesting bird season your dog should be on a short lead.

The law states that you must keep your dog on a lead no longer than 2 metres between 1 March and 31 July, when on any open access land to protect ground-nesting birds.

That’s ridiculous. Lots of people have XL bullies who are perfectly good people and owners. My cousin has two she rescued and they are wonderful dogs. You just have to be a sensible human being. The same as any dog.

Fuck that! You're either completely delusional about xl bullies, or you're an idiot too.

Hummusandcrisps · 18/06/2025 22:36

I think you're in the wrong OP for not having your dog on a lead. We have a huge park next to us, like a giant field with a playground in the corner. There's a sign saying all dogs must be kept in lead but every evening there's a group of people walking their dogs off the lead. Every time one of the dogs will come bounding over to my 4 year old son and the owner is either not watching or they say oh he's only being friendly. It drives me nuts. Doesn't matter how well you think you know your dog, all dogs can snap. Keep them on a lead.
We used to have a boxer dog when I was young. She was very lovely but hated other children so was kept on a lead and way from kids. It's not always obvious you have an aggressive dog until you've got them.

MustardGlass · 18/06/2025 22:37

If you let your dog approach any other dog the person being a cunt is you.

Funny is subjective…

Anyhow, enough, or you'll have achieved your aim of derailing the thread away from #dogc*ntgate. (Are you OP?)
