Parents starting an air raid shelter

I've called my parents tonight and they’ve been telling me all about the shelter that they’re building in case Russia attacks. I feel like this is crazy! They do live near an army base (within 10 miles) so they’ve been packing food, water, games, bedding etc to survive a week! Is it me or is that insane? Are we really at that level of risk now? Should I be starting a pack? What do I even put in it?

Best to get our ducks in a row then 😆

No. We really aren't.

Well no point in bothering living anyway I guess!

No. We really aren't.

How so?

I went to a very interesting lecture on cybersecurity recently. Those who think there is no need to prep in some form are incredibly naive. We are under attack every single week at a fairly steady low level. Things like targeted attacks on our power systems or even just on banking systems (no cash coming out of the machines, no shops open, no deliveries available) would mean that those who have been realistic and have prepped to be reasonably comfortable staying at home for a few weeks would be in a far far better position than those who live day to day and don't have food water medicine power and heat for their family.

Those talking about threads and mocking the OPs parents might be better watching "blackout". I think it's available on channel 4. The UK one is better than the US one but they are both worth watching and I'd put money on some of those who who haven't ever thought about putting some key stores aside deciding that it might in fact be a good idea after watching.

and now we are really under threat. The US bombing of Iran overnight means the risk level has just sky rocketed.

That says quite a lot about you.

Have a good chuckle at this thread:

@PanicStations2025 me too how can we get it back!! §

Unfortunately literal joy suckers seem to rule here.

Anyway I think it's sweet of your parents and something to keep them occupied, s little project.

Who knows maybe they could make a few bob and sell their story.

IsthataYes · 22/06/2025 23:38

@user746016 agree l remember during covid we the UK were poorly prepared and it was said in places like Germany they were asked to keep s few weeks supply as a matter of course

  • we got a little camping stove and gas a while ago and I do feel more independent with the thought that we could have hot water bottle in winter if heating was cut off and tea, cups of tea and we can cook!!
