I was sitting in her car, having a chat about RE teching in junior schools. I explained to her that I thought RE should encompass teaching more religions than christianity (muslim, Judaism, paganism, budism etc) then she piped up how she thought I was wrong and how our children should only learn christianity (regardless of parents beliefs)as all of the others were corrupting and would mislead them into a life of terrorism! Then she goes on about how our children should be learning about the crusades (sorry, didn't this involve christians slaughtering people from other religions?) and how immigrants are bleading the country dry and using all of our resources. Sorry, I don't find her views accptable, especially as she's married to a Muslim Immigrant and she's applying for a grant for him so he can go to Uni for 3 years! AIBU to think she's full of shit?

Your "friend" was probably waiting to see if you would point out the blindingly obvious to her or stay quiet??!

totalmisfit · 23/05/2008 18:46

maybe you could have an interesting discussion with your friend about whether the crusades were 'Medieval Terrorism'???

If slaughtering every man, woman and child in every major settlement in the middle east aint terrorism, tell me what is.

cornsilk · 23/05/2008 18:47

The cleaner where I work was having a rant to me about immigrants the other day. Then she told me that both of her daughters had gone to work in Australia.

northernrefugee39 · 23/05/2008 19:19

cornsilk- lol, I love the fact that many people "emmigrate" to Aus, Canada, Spain et al, because there are too many immigrants in this country.

pagwatch · 23/05/2008 19:24

i remember a guy working in a bar in earls Court who said the area was fine except for all the immigrants. He was Australian. He was not being ironic.

LazyLinePainterJane · 23/05/2008 19:29

I think that for a lot of people (FIL included) there is a very sad delusion that "immigrants" means non-white immigrants. Like they don't count if you can't tell by looking, or something equally bizarre. FIL often spouts bullshit about "these immigrants" and I know for a fact that he is actually only referring to non-whites. TBH, he would probably not even consider a white person an immigrant, regardless of where they come from.

Maybe this is why everyone gets so upset about the polish immigrant community, they don't make themselves easy to distinguish at length. I suggest a big sticker on their forehead to easily aid the bigots in their quest for a BNP run country.

AMumInScotland · 23/05/2008 19:32

When I was a student, someone moaned to me about how the place was full of foreigners. When I agreed that there were a lot, specially from the US, she said "Oh no, not them, I mean proper foreigners!"

RainyWednesday · 23/05/2008 19:46

I don't know whether it's true, but I read a few years ago that there are more Aussies/New Zealanders here illegally than from anywhere else.

kerala · 23/05/2008 19:47

My MIL complains about "all these Eastern Europeans" coming in. She herself is German and has lived here for most of her adult life but just doesnt equate herself with being an immigrant too.

LazyLinePainterJane · 23/05/2008 19:58

I thought that the number 1 immigrant group in this country are those from the US. I have no idea where I got that from though.

Dolorescat · 23/05/2008 20:17

Your 'friend' and my 'friend' should meet aveanap!!
When I got married (to a muslim immigrant) she phoned me and said that everyone at work thought I was an idiot but that she had stuck up for me (by saying that I was only a little bit of an idiot). And then she added that if t all went wrong then she would be there for me, and ust to be careful that my new husband didn't become an alcoholic, a terrorist or make me wear a scarf or try to kidnap me .
She also pointed out that all his family would want to come and live with us in our one bedroomed flat.
Then she said congratulations!!!

RainyWednesday · 23/05/2008 20:17

LazyLinePainterJane I think the figure I had was for illegal immigrants. Can't find it now though. A quick Google just suggested that until 2001 the largest immigrant population was Irish, which makes sense I guess!

Monkeytrousers · 23/05/2008 20:18

either she's racist or very confused - or a very confused racist

Monkeytrousers · 23/05/2008 20:19

or racist confused maybe

AMumInScotland · 23/05/2008 20:30

She sounds like the kind of idiot who makes sweeping negative comments about SAHMs/old people/whatever in front of someone who she knows is in that group, then says "Oh I don't mean you of course" and genuinely means it because she's too thick to connect two thoughts together at the same time...

avenanap · 23/05/2008 20:51

You've got her in one! Her kid's lovely though. He spends alot of time here with my ds. I'm not surprised he doesn't want to be at home now though. I was always under the impression that the crusades were about chistians 'converting' people of other faiths to christianity through the use of violence, torture and murder! Hmm. Nice!
