Make up on the train: get up ten mins earlier

Just get up ten minutes earlier!! It’s not hard.

You’re taking up two seats. Your elbows are jabbing the person next to you. Your setting spray just hit me in the bloody face. And, even worse, you’ve painted your eyebrows on wonky because you’re on a moving bloody train!!!!

Why do people not get up earlier?!

Quelle horreur! 😱

Indeed. It was the first time she’d been to Paris & was impressed by the sights, but that was her most memorable event. What prowess on a moving train!

chill, it's weird and unpleasant to do this in public and you know it.

I am not extrapolating: they have decided they MUST be wearing make-up, or they wouldn't be doing it, they are too lazy to do it in the privacy of their own home, but it's ironic that they don't want people to see them without make-up for the rest of the day.. while a carriage full of people is fine. 😂

I am not tutting, I roll my eyes, (already covered in make-up because I happen to like make-up), or we make fun at "those" women who make such a public show because sometimes it's so funny other commuters can't help laughing.

‘Too lazy’, ‘weird and unpleasant’ - again I think this is a strong reaction to women choosing to save 10 mins in the morning by putting a bit of make up on on the train. Do you judge yourself so harshly or just other women who choose to step outside of the rules you’ve decided we should all follow?

If you had guests round for dinner it would be weird if you sat beside them on the sofa and started doing your makeup. I don’t know why but it would feel so disrespectful. I know it’s not quite analogous, but that is how I feel when people do their makeup on the train. It feels as though they are using the space as their personal dressing room regardless of everyone else.

But wouldn’t you feel the same way if the host sat down and read a paper/played on their phone/put headphones on and listened to a podcast? Being a passenger on a train is different than hosting a dinner…

Well I do it when needs must and I don’t think it’s weird and unpleasant at all. Maybe it’s a generation thing. Or a ‘got better things to get worried about’ thing 🤷‍♀️

I know. It’s really harsh. By association I am weird, unpleasant and lazy. Im none of these, I’m just efficiently using my time on a commute when needs must. I do think people who judge others like this must have a deeply critical inner voice. It makes me feel sad for them to be honest; it must be awful feeling so vitriolic towards another human for such an innocuous reason.

It’s not ironic at all, they are clearly choosing to wear makeup up but are quite obviously perfectly happy to be seen without it hence leaving their house makeup free. You are completely making up that they absolutely cannot be seen without makeup.

Strikeback · 18/06/2025 06:39

Don't mind about make-up. But eating breakfast on the train, if it's something porridgey or smelly - no. You're just showing off.

Comtesse · 18/06/2025 06:44

If I can get a seat on the tube I’m going to do my make up. No sprays or smelly stuff like perfume or nail varnish, that’s not cool.

KaleQueen · 18/06/2025 07:44

Doing my make up at home this morning! Because I’ve got time. I didn’t get up ANY earlier, I just haven’t had anything unexpected to derail my schedule. Everyone can breathe a huge sigh of relief! 🙄

Is that a head tilt I see there? 🙂

There's no point hurling insults at people who are kindly pointing out that applying make up whilst on the train makes you look disorganised and a bit common. We're doing you a favour suggesting you do it at home.

We live in a society, we all have rules we should all follow - consideration for others is not a luxury. I don't make the rules, and most of them are common sense.

Speaking of common.. personal grooming in public places is grim.
That's life

If you read the thread….im not the one ‘hurling insults’ but whatever, you crack on inwardly judging people who don’t meet your own imaginary societal standards. Ps I literally could not give a flying fk what anyone thinks of me putting make up on anywhere. Nor would most who do it. Hence why they do it. They just don’t care. Such a non issue.

And yea to do feel sad for that poster. Such an ugly inner dialogue going on there. Sitting judging others and rolling their eyes. Must be a pretty sad way to live. Genuinely. I know people like this. They’re deeply deeply unhappy people.

MargoLivebetter · 18/06/2025 09:20

If you put make up on when you are on the train and you don't care what all your fellow passengers think, then why do you need to judge other people's private evaluation of you? It is not like anyone on this thread has said that they stood up and delivered a verdict out loud. It is like those who say they "don't care" want to be the thought police and not accept that other people may not like what they are doing in public.

just commuters who would like to read their own book in peace, without having to deal with people smells/ smelly food/ noise/ personal grooming 😂

Who knew performance make-up was a thing!

If you take public transport you need to deal with the public. Someone having a coffee, a pastry or doing their makeup is typically no more of a nuisance than you reading your book.

KaleQueen · 18/06/2025 09:27

Yep we’ve got a divided opinion and I’m allowed mine 😀

Goditsmemargaret · 18/06/2025 09:37

I did this for years when I commuted to work in my 20s and 30s (over a decade ago).

I never understand the big objections, it's just being efficient with your time. I worked in client facing roles, we had to look glamorous. I would leave the house or the gym fresh faced, hair tied up and runners on. I'd do my face on the train, grab a coffee on the walk from the train, fix my hair in the work toilets and change my footwear.

I really love early mornings and I love the feeling of fresh air on my skin as I walk to and from the train. I now own my own business, drive to work but I always get a barefaced walk before driving. I'm often at the school gates with no makeup too.

I don't feel more or less confident / beautiful with or without makeup. I think it's a different look and maybe that's why I'm not self conscious about the public seeing me apply it.

People spraying stuff and leaving stains is just disgusting though.

I’ve never found that a woman applying make up has prevented me from reading my book. Sometimes watching her is more interesting though. A couple of times I’ve caught her eye, smiled and said “Just admiring your skills”.

I have. It's a lot of movement in my peripheral vision. It is annoying and distracting.

The fact you think it’s a performance reveals a lot and your comments now make sense. You hate them don’t you? Those confident women who don’t live their lives based on what may or may not live up to other people’s ’standards’. Theyre really not performing their make up for you or anyone else you know? They’re just getting on with their busy lives.

It has never even occurred to me to find this annoying.

A lot of internalised misogyny going on here.

Wouldn't you find it annoying being repeatedly jabbed and having miscellaneous sprays extending over to your face and eyes?
